이웃이라는 사물 Familiar AKA Object

우리는 무분별한 폭력 속에 노출되어, 이제는 어느 정도의 폭력에는 이미 감각을 잃었다 해도 과언이 아닌 시대에 살고 있다. 비단 폭력뿐만이 아니라, 무차별적이고 불가항력적인 수많은 사건들이 우리 주변에서 일어나고 있고, 시간이 지남에 따라 사건들은 과거의 형태가 되어 우리 의식 속에서 잊혀져 간다.

작가 김재범은 국내외에서 일어났던 사건・사고를 한 장의 이미지로 재구성하여 보는 이들에게 잊혀져 있던 기억을 다시금 떠올리게 하는 작업을 한다. 특히 작가가 주목하는 부분은 사건의 본질이다. 우리가 매체에서 접하게 되는 수많은 사진이나 영상은 폭력이 행해지는 당시의 상황만을 보여줄 뿐이다. 이들은 시각적 임팩트가 너무나 강해 보는 이로 하여금 충격적인 이미지에 사로잡혀 사건의 본질 자체에 대하여 생각을 할 수 없게 한다. 김재범은 결과적인 이미지 정보들로 인해 우리가 간과하게 되는 점들을 주목하여 사건을 재구성하거나 발생하기 이전의 상황을 그려냄으로써 '폭력'의 본질에 의미를 두고 사건에 대하여 다시금 조명해 본다. 각 작품의 상황은 범죄자의 주변환경이나 사건의 요소들이 묘사되어 있어 우리에게 다양한 생각의 장을 열어줌과 동시에 사건 이면에 '존재하지만 보이지 않는' 폭력에 대해 주목하게 한다.

본 전시에서는 그 동안 작가가 수집한 자료들을 설치한 아카이브 작품, Cube를 만날 수 있는데, 이는 작가의 작업 전반을 이해할 수 있는 토대가 된다. 작품 제목과 이미지로만은 쉽사리 떠올리거나 연결시키지 못하는 내용들이 아카이브 작품을 통해 제공됨으로써 우리가 스스로 사건을 재구성할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다. 작가는 사건에 대해 어떠한 정의를 내리지는 않는다. 다만 우리에게 생각해 볼 시간과 여유를 선사할 따름이다. ■ 송은 아트큐브

Lost Memories, Forgotten Crimes ● Being exposed to indiscriminate violence through media worldwide, we have be¬come insensitive to some degrees of violence. As a society, we seem to be indif¬ferent to not only of the violence but also of the reckless and inevitable accidents which quickly become the past and forgotten. ● Kim, Jae-Bum's artistic concept is about reminding us of these forgotten memo¬ries and news incidents by reconstructing them into one image. The artist espe¬cially focuses on the essence of the accident. All the countless images and videos the media focuses on, is only of the moment that the violence was committed and the extremely strong impact of these images does not allow for us to con¬sider the nature of the occurrence. The artist pays attention to the overlooked facts and leads us to reconsider the misfortune based on the essence of violence by reproducing or re-creating certain situations to a moment before the incident happened. The situation of each work shown gives us an insight on the thoughts of the criminal before the unfortunate episode. ● Kim, Jae-Bum's work the Cube is an archival installation work, consisting of data and materials of incidents which the artist has collected. As a foundation for better understanding of his overall concept, this installation provides us the opportunities to reconstruct the unfortunate happenings but allowing our own interpretations of the mind of the criminal behind the violence. ■ SongEun ArtCube
