이번 전시에는 안창홍, 이병호, 정해윤, 최기창 등 4명의 작가가 참여해 회화, 입체, 설치, 드로잉 등을 선보인다. 서로 다른 작가적 관심만큼이나 다채로운 형식적 태도들이 하나의 전시 안에서 어떻게 조화될지 살펴보는 것은 이번 전시가 제공하는 가장 흥미로운 관심사의 하나다. 비슷한 이유로 각 작업을 가로지르는 어떤 주제적 차원의 유사성을 발견하는 것은 쉽지 않다. 설령 가능하더라도 전시의 방향을 거기에 두고자 하지 않았다. 갤러리 잔다리의 5월 주제기획전『Mapping The Gray』는 하나의 미술행위가 그 자체로 어쩌면 일단의 '모호함(ambiguity)'으로부터 구체적이고 분명한 '상징적 표지들(symbolic sign)'을 건져 올리는 과정이다라는 인식을 그 출발점으로 삼고 있다. 그 표지들을 따라가는 일은 거기에 내재된 사회적, 예술적 맥락들을 적극 살필 수 있는 계기를 마련해줄 것이다.

구체적으로 들어가자면, 위의 과정이란 아마도 동시대 미술행위에 담겨 있는 시대의 정서를 감지하는 일이라고 할 수 있을 듯하다. 작가 각각의 매체적 관심과 접근에 따라 작품을 형상화 하는 동안 이전에 이미 주어진 사회적 상황과 여건이 자연스레 배어 나올 것이기 때문이다. 이는 찰스 샌더스 퍼스의 이른바 '사회적 기호(social semiotics)'로써 우리가 몸 담고 있는 현실의 단면들을 드러내게 된다. 달리 말해 이런 신호들을 진지하게 파악하여 경험을 반성하는 일은 스스로의 건강성을 유지하고, 앞으로의 나아갈 방향을 어림하는 데 가장 필수적인 요소다. 새롭게 요구되는 시대의 패러다임을 주체적으로 찾아갈 원동력도 그런 긴장의 끈을 놓지 않을 때 비로소 얻어질 수 있다. 이런 맥락으로 볼 때 여기서의 '모호함'은 그 나름의 방향을 설정하고 있다는 점에서 출구 없는 '막막함'과는 분명 차별된다.

다른 한 편으로, 그 과정을 들여다 보는 것은 미술의 현재적 흐름 혹은 방향을 가늠하는 일과도 맞닿아 있다. 들뢰즈의 말처럼 각 작품 안에는 작가가 그들 나름의 방식으로 요약한 미술의 역사가 담겨 있다. 때문에 우리가 유의해야 할 것은 작품들의 형식적 경향을 살핌에 있어 마치 위계학적 계보를 작성하듯 지나치게 횡적인 잣대를 들이대는 일은 매우 위험하다는 점이다. 그것은 마치 차림새나 직업만으로 한 사람의 선진성이나 인격을 함부로 단정하는 것만큼이나 폭력적일 수 있다. 대신 작품에 내재된 역사적 전개과정의 면밀한 검토가 다른 무엇에 앞서 그 미술행위의 위상을 판단하는 비중 있는 근거가 되어야 할 것이다. ■ 윤두현

In this exhibition, four artists - ChangHong Ahn, ByungHo Lee, HaiYun Jung and KiChang Choi - present their paintings, sculpture, installations and drawings. One of this exhibition's intentions is to find out how different styles strike a balance in one exhibition, as diverse as artists' perspectives. By the same token, it is not easy to find similarity from different themes that each artwork represents. Even if it is possible, we did not set the exhibition towards that direction. Gallery Zandari's special exhibition for May,『Mapping The Gray』, begins the recognition that an artistic action may constitute a process to identify a concrete and clear 'symbolic sign' from 'ambiguity.' Following the symbolic sign will provide an opportunity to take a closer look at the social and artistic context within it. ● To be specific, it can be said that the process mentioned above is perceiving the sentiment of the times from the contemporary artistic action. That is because the given social situations and conditions are naturally reflected while each artist is working on his (or her) artwork according to his interest and approach to his medium. It is the so-called 'social semiotics' of Charles Sanders Peirce, which reveals the aspects of the real world we live in. It is necessary to identify these signs sincerely and reflect on our experiences for keeping healthy and discerning our future direction. The impetus to find a newly required paradigm of the times can be obtained only when we keep ourselves alert. In this context, 'ambiguity' is distinguished from 'vagueness' that is devoid of an exit, as it sets its own direction. ● On the other hand, looking into the process involves guessing the contemporary trends or direction of art. As Gilles Deleuze's said, every artwork has a brief history of art that artists summarized in their own way. Therefore, we need to be cautious that it is very risky to apply an 'excessively horizontal standard' in grasping the formal styles of artworks as if creating a hierarchical tree. It can be also violent as if determining a person's civility or personality from his appearance or occupation. Instead, the status of the artistic action should be determined based on the thorough examination on historical developments in the works of art, rather than other things. ■ DooHyun Yun
