빈 공간을 통해 엿본 이중구조의 양면성, 그리고 소통과 관계를 위한 '숨(Breath)' ● 작가 이길명은 이번 작품에서 눈에 보이지 않는 '숨'을 표현하기 위해서 조각칼이나 그라인더를 사용하여 나무의 외형과 겉모습은 가늘게 남기고 내부공간은 안으로 파고 들어가 마치 인간의 허파와도 같은 내부의 빈 공간들을 만들어내고 있는데, 이것은 다름 아닌 '숨과 호흡'을 통한 '소통'의 공간이자 작가 개인적으로는 비움의 공간이 될 수 있다. 아울러 이러한 공간으로부터 분리된 이면(裏面)의 공간과 이로부터 파생된 공간 역시 상생(相生)을 위한 공간이자, 역설적으로 '채움'의 공간이 된다. 하이데거가 그의 초기 대작 『존재와 시간, Sein und zeit』에서 현존재가 세계와의 의사소통적 거리를 트기위해 공간체험은 근원적 친근성 속에서 사물을 재정위하는 소통의 사건으로부터 연역되어야 한다고 주장했던 것처럼, 작가 이길명은 나무라는 매체의 속성을 활용하여 발화자(작가)와 수신자(감상자) 사이의 교감과 소통의 가능성을 최대한 조성하고 있는 것이다. 필자가 서두에서 '이중 구조의 양면성을 통한 소통과 관계의 공간'이라 지칭한 것은 바로 이런 '비움과 채움의 공간'이 서로 갈등을 일으키거나 적대적인 공간이 아니라 오히려 소통과 관계를 위한 상보(相補)적인 관계의 공간이기 때문이다. ■ 이태호

Ambilaterality of Dual Structure Peeping through an Empty Space and 'Breath' for Communication and Relationship ● Lee, Kil-myung uses burins and gravers or grinder to express invisible 'breath' and leaves thin appearance of trees and creates empty spaces inside like lungs of human beings by burrowing into the interior space in the works. This can be the space of 'communication' through 'breath and breathing', not anything else, and the space for the void for the artist, personally. Also, the reverse side of space separated from this space and spaces derived from this are also the spaces for epigyny and becomes the space of 'the void,' paradoxically. As Heidegger insisted that experience of space should be deduced from events of communication re-orientating things in the fundamental familiarity for the current being to open the communicative distance with the world in his early masterpiece 『Sein und zeit』, the artist Lee, Kil-myung is creating the possibility of communion and communication between the speaker (the artist) and recipients (appreciators) in maximum by utilizing the attributes of the medium, trees. I called 'space for communication and relationship through ambilaterality of dual structure' in the beginning because this 'space of the void and the solid' is not a hostile space that causes conflicts, but a space of complementary relationship for communication and relationship. ■ Tea-ho, Lee
