어느덧 나는 편리하고 세련된 것들에 익숙해져 버렸다. 그러나 동시에 지금의 나는 반어법과도 같이 조금 불편하더라도 오래된 것이 가져다주는 정서적인 부분, 예스러운 것이 우려내는 흥취를 그리워하기 시작한다. 이번 프로젝트는 사람들에게 서서히 잊혀져가고, 어쩌면 세월의 더께를 감당할 수 없어 조금씩 마모되어 사라져가는 유무형적인 대상을 향한 관심에서 시작된 셈이다. 프로젝트의 처음은, 『spectator-극장』이다.

이번 작업은, 세련된 멀티플렉스 영화관이 아니라 낡고 작은 단관극장이 배경이다. 그리고 그곳을 찾는 이들은 우리-소시민-들이다. 삶의 던적스러움에서 자유롭지 못해 피로에 깊숙이 파묻힌 이들이, 고작 스크린에 투사되는 빛의 환영을 구경하러 온다. 찌무룩한 몸을 이끌고 온 그들은 마치 소풍이라도 떠나듯 작은 휴식의 시간을 원했을 것이다. 그들은 영화 한 편이 흐르는 시간 동안 깜깜한 극장 안에 몸을 기대어 짧은 꿈을 꾸고 싶어 했을 것이다. 잠시간 지금 이곳을 잊고 저편 너머로 건너가 순연한 몽상에 빠져들어 가기를 바랐을 것이다. 하지만, 영화 속 인물들을 무력하게 바라보아야 하는 적요함 속에서 오히려 그들은 여전히 제 스스로의 삶만을 외롭게 근심하는 중일 지도 모른다. 어쩌면 그들은 같은 꿈을 꾸지 못할 것이다.

똑같은 공간으로 그들을 그러모았건만 결코 같은 시간에 두지 못했던 이유도 그 때문이다. 너른 공간이지만 객석은 사람들로 옹기종기 채워지지 않았다. 제각각 따로 놓아진 인물의 곁에는 빛의 파장에서 벗어난 어둠만이 나란히 자리 잡고 있다. 나는 극장이라는 장소에서 늘 상 우리가 바라보던 자리를 벗어나 반대 지점인 스크린의 위치에서, 어두운 구석 자리에 앉아 별 볼 일 없이 무심한 표정으로 이쪽을 바라보고 있는 그들의 존재를 지켜본다. 결국, 내가 이 자리에서 그들을 '구경'하고 있는 것은, 그들 하나하나의 외로움이라는 생각이 든다. 그럴 때면 나는 뜻 모를 설움에 잠긴다. 영화가 끝나고 문밖에서 빛이 새어 들어오면 외롭게 앉아 있던 그들은 이제 자리를 뜰 것이다. 영화는 끝이 났지만, 극장을 나서는 그들은 또 다시 자신의 삶을 끌어안고 살아나갈 것이다. ■ 김창언

I have become familiarized to the convenient and refined without realizing it. At the same time however, I miss some emotional element of the old, and some flavor derived from the antique even if they cause some inconvenience. ● This project is triggered by my concern for tangible and intangible objects that are gradually being forgotten and vanishing due to the weight of time. The project begins from Spectator-Theater. The background of this work is a smalls habby movie theater, not aluxurious multiplex. ● Those fettered by trifling daily life and stricken by fatigue come to the theater to watch an illusion of light. They are ordinary lower, middle class citizens.They probably want to have a brief time of repose as if enjoying an excursion, and experience a short dream during the running time of a film in the dark theater. They also want to fall into a reverie, forgetting worldly affairs. ● But, they probably worry about their lives in solitude, watching figures in a film helplessly. They cannot dream the same dream maybe. Although they are in the same space, they cannot share time. There are many empty seats in spacious places. Each figure escapes from the waves of light in the dark. ● In a theater I look at those who watch the screen indifferently from the position of the screen opposite to them. I think what I am watching there is the solitude each person feels. At the time I feel some sorrow. When the movie is over and light enters from the outside, they will leave their seats. After the movie is over, they will again return to their lives. ■ Kim,Chang-Eon
