All That Glitters

유독 화려한 것에 눈길이 쏠렸고, 이를 하나하나 수집하는 것도 좋아했다. 스스로를 화려하고 아름답게 만드는 걸 좋아하면서도 불편함은 항상 따라왔다. 겉모습을 중시하는 풍조로 흘러가고 있는 흐름을 불편해하면서도 너무나 자연스럽게 그 속에 끌려가는 나의모습을 본다. 자연스럽게 이끌리는 욕구와 욕망. 이를 성취했을 때의 쾌감으로 망각하는 공허하고 외로운 감정들... 이런 현상과 모습들을 작업에 담아본다.

작업 속에는 명품이라고 불리는 유명 메이커들의 구두와 액세서리가 화려하고 아름답게 반짝이지만, 욕망을 채우기 위한 수단이자 말 그대로 액세서리(주체가 되는 것을 종속적으로 보조하는 구실의 부속품 부속물 총칭.)일 뿐이다. 지속적으로 반복되는 욕구 또는 소비사회 속에서 따라가는 나의모습, 현재 우리의 모습을 보여준다. 작업 속에는 빛나는 물질이 존재한다. 이는 값비싼 보석도, 금은보화도 아니다. 아주 작은 핀에 불과하다. 명품이라 칭하는 유명메이커의 상표무늬가 무늬일 뿐이라는 사실처럼, 이 핀이 여럿이모여 아름답게 반짝반짝 빛나지만, 보이지 않는 이면 또한 존재한다. 우리는 그 이면을 보고 싶지도, 보이고 싶어 하지도 않는다. 그것이 바로 현 우리의 모습일지도 모른다... ■ 문지혜

I've always been fascinated with fancy things and collected them. Although I like to ornament and beautify myself, discomfort has always followed. Although I feel uncomfortable placing importance on external appearance, I still find myself naturally going with such flow. My work captures such natural desires and longing, and the emptiness and loneliness that arise when I lose myself in pleasure of fulfilling them. The brand name high-heels and accessories are beautiful and flashy in my work, but they're just ornamentation (a general term referring to all components that function as an assistance to the wearer) and means of fulfilling ones' desires. My work reflects myself, and people of this contemporary society who follow the consumerist culture where desire perpetually repeats itself. Brilliantly flashy objects are portrayed in my work. They're not expensive jewels like gold or silver; they're nothing more than small pins. Just as brand name labels are nothing more than a label, there is an element that is hidden behind the group of pins that glitter. Neither do we want to see that side, not let others see it. This might perhaps be the true portrayal of what we actually are today. ■ MOON JI HYE
