"The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate." ● Little things you do everyday eventually add up to the big picture in life. Our lives are all about relating to the others, relating to different events and matters. As long as you do your best in any given situation, when we look back, every single happening in our life composes meaningful time. Through her artworks, Kim MiKyoung says, "face life, embrace it and cherish it".
On her canvas, colors represent people and emotion. It is a metaphor of life. The colors interact, just like her interaction with different elements in life. They can be loud with complementary colors in layers. They also can be tranquil and serene. In her painting all sing together; either song of joy or lamentation. Sometimes life seems to be simple and quiet but it also gets complicated, intense, and noisy. Yet it is still beautiful and worth to be lived fully. Her works are celebration of life and cheers to its hectic moments. It’s also the way she manages her life.
Kim uses a mixture of very fine pigments and turpentine for these spectacular images. Through long hours of letting the pigments flow and spread out and drying, layers of colors give the painting a rich texture and a vibrant touch.
In contemporary art scene, we often expect the artworks edge and radical; they are rarely commented as beautiful. However we have to say this artist from Korea creates extremely beautiful works. The exhibition will give encouragement to life in this season of spring. ■ Karen Wu
