No Dog Walking on the Roof

두산갤러리 뉴욕에서는 구동희의 개인전『No Dog Walking on the Roof』를 개최한다. 이번 전시에는 HD 비디오 1점과 사진, 설치 작품들이 선보일 예정이다.

이번전시 제목『No Dog Walking on the Roof』는 끊어 읽기에 따라 다른 의미가 될 수 있는 문장으로, 단어의 배열에 따른 의미변화에서 재발견된 언어유희와 그것이 갖는 이미지의 조합에 있어 생기는 현상을 보여준다. 작품의 소재는 주로 작가의 일상생활이나 주변에서 수집된 아이디어들이 사용되는데 작가만의 시간과 장소의 사이에서, 익숙하지만 한편으로는 어색하고 불완전한 이야기가 철저하게 계획, 편집되어 시각화 된다. ● 이번전시에서 보여질 사진작품「Witnesses」에서도 어디선가 본 듯한 진부한(cliché) 이미지-유토피아-를 선글라스를 낀 사람들의 다양한 시점으로 그럴듯하게 조합하였다. 작가는 기존의 형식들을 차용하면서도, 비정형적 구성, 완결되지 않은 반복과 갑작스런 종결 등 끊임없는 변형을 추구한다. 구동희에게 있어 '영상'이라는 매체는 단지 이야기를 조합하는데 필요한 '수단'으로서 만의 의미를 지니며, 이를 통해 언어화할 수 없는 순간과 감정들을 서술한다. 이렇게 특정 장치의 나열이나 해체로 서술된 이야기는 종종 관객의 기대감을 무너뜨리거나 혼란을 초래하기도 하나, 동시에 새로운 해석의 가능성을 열어준다. ● 구동희 (b. 1974)는 홍익대학교 조소과를 졸업하고, 미국 예일대학교 조소과 대학원을 마쳤다. 아뜰리에 에르메스 (2008, 서울, 한국), 아라리오 갤러리 (2006, 서울, 한국), AkademieScholoss Solitude (2005, 슈트트가르트, 독일) 에서 개인전을, 퐁피두 센터 (2011, 파리, 프랑스), 플라토 (2011, 서울, 한국), 아트선재센터 (2010, 서울, 한국), 경기도 미술관 (2010, 안산, 한국), Anne & Gordon Samstag Museum of Art (2010, 아델레이드, 호주), 마루가메 겐이치로 이노쿠마 미술관 (2009, 카가와도, 일본), 백남준 미술관 (2008, 용인, 한국), 제 7회 광주비엔날레 (2008, 광주, 한국), 페레스 프로젝트 (2007, 베를린, 독일) 등 다수의 단체전에 참여하였다. ■ 두산갤러리

DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to present 'No Dog Walking on the Roof', a solo exhibition of work by Donghee Koo, from April 5 to May 5, 2012. The exhibition features media arts and an installation which invite the viewer to the perception of uncertainty. ● Koo meticulously visualizes and directs awkward and incomplete stories into her media works, which express the contradictions and absurdities of her ordinary life. When she received a letter from her apartment supervisor saying, "No dog walking on the roof," she focused on how this equivocal phrase could be interpreted into different meanings. This title defines her working method and the ambiguous interpretations of her works. ● For Witnesses, Koo plausibly stages the clichés of people in sunglasses, from different perspectives. She applies existing visual forms, yet constantly pursues change through atypical plot, endless repetitions, and sudden closure. For her, the 'media art' only holds the meaning of 'medium' which can depict moments that may not be described in words. This often deceives or confuses the viewer, but at the same time opens a door to new interpretations. ■ DOOSAN Gallery
