한국의 그림 - 매너에 관하여

하이트컬렉션은 2012년 3월 그룹전 『한국의 그림 – 매너에 관하여』를 개최한다. '현재' 시점에 '한국'이라는 장소에서 일어나고 있는 회화적 현상을 '매너(manner)'라는 주제를 통해 살펴보고자 한다. 전시를 통해 본인만의 독특한 매너, 즉 회화의 기술과 형식을 지속적으로 관철해 나간 8명의 작가 김선두, 김지원, 민정기, 박대성, 유근택, 이광호, 제여란, 홍승혜의 대표적인 작업들을 선보인다.

기획자 강석호는 현재 한국 회화의 지형을 이해하고 소통하고자 『한국의 그림 – 사진을 그리다. 읽다.』(2011, 갤러리16번지/갤러리팩토리) 전에서 출발한 일련의 전시들을 진행하고 있으며, 『한국의 그림 – 매너에 관하여』는 그 두 번째 전시이다. 이번 전시는 각각 장지, 화선지에 먹, 분채, 수묵채색, 캔버스에 유화, 벽면에 디지털 이미지 스티커 등 서로 다른 매체를 가지고 방식으로 작업하는 작가들의 작업을 한자리에 모았다. 장지 위에 색을 쌓아 올리는 기법으로 한국화의 명맥을 잇는 동시에 새로움을 시도하는 김선두의 최근 풍경화, 한 대상을 지속적으로 탐구하는 김지원의 맨드라미 작업, 강을 중심으로 주변의 풍경과 인물을 담은 민정기의 작품들이 전시된다. 그리고 전통 동양화를 다루는 박대성의 수묵화와 서예 작업, 일상을 소재로 하는 유근택 작가의 최근 뉴욕 체류기 작업, 대상에 면밀히 다가가는 이광호의 인터뷰시리즈와 선인장 작업, 제여란의 비구상 회화작업들이 포함되고 이와 함께 실제 공간과 공간 속 구성 요소들의 관계에 주목한 홍승혜의 작업이 벽면에 설치된다. 이들 작업을 통해 매체와 방법론, 작업 소재와 주제, 나아가 작업에 대한 태도에서 드러나는 매너의 여러 면면들을 짚어본다. 더불어 전시를 통해서 작가들의 삶과 예술, 그리고 가치관이 어떻게 작업에 투영되었는가를 살펴보고자 한다.

전시와 함께 출간되는 책 『한국의 그림 – 매너에 관하여』에는 작가의 인터뷰와 비평가 김백균과 정현의 글을 담았다. 『한국의 그림 – 사진을 그리다. 읽다.』 전에 참여했던 작가들이 이번 전시에 참여한 8명의 작가들을 각기 만나 작가의 '기법(manner)'과 '태도(manner)' 등에 대해 이야기를 나누었다. 또한 김백균과 정현은 인터뷰에 직접 참여하거나 모니터하면서, 한국 회화의 현주소에서 이들 작업을 어떻게 읽고 쓸 것인가에 대하여 고민하였다. 한편 전시기간 중에 전시에 여러 역할로 참여한 모든 작가와 비평가들이 함께하는 두 번의 토크 프로그램이 진행될 예정이다.

『한국의 그림 – 매너에 관하여』는 당대를 살아가는 화가 8명이 '무엇을', '어떻게' 그리면서 '살아가고' 있는지를 단적으로 보여준다. 함께 출간되는 책은 세대가 다르고 서로 다른 작업을 하는 작가들 사이의 대화를 기록하고 이들 작업 전반에 대한 평론을 제시함으로써 작업을 이해할 수 있는 또 하나의 통로를 제공하는 동시에 한국 그림에 대한 소통의 양상과 가능성을 엿볼 수 있게 한다. 이러한 과정을 통해 현재 한국 회화의 현장에서 가능한 매너, 한국적인 매너 그리고 한국적 회화에 다양한 이야기들의 시작되는 단초가 마련되기를 기대한다. ■ 하이트문화재단

The HITE Collection is pleased to announce the exhibition, Manner in Korean Paintings, will open in March 2012. The focus of this exhibition is to highlight the painterly phenomena in 'Korea' at the 'current' time, through the lens of 'manners'. The exhibition features the works by eight artists, KIM Sun Doo, KIM Jiwon, MIN Joung Ki, PARK Dae-Sung, YOO Geun Taek, LEE Kwang-Ho, JE Yeo-Ran, HONG Seung-Hye, all of whom are considered to have attained respective levels of unique manner, namely, painterly techniques and forms. ● The curator for the exhibition, KANG Seokho, has previously held two of its former franchises at 16 bungee and Gallery Factory (both in 2011), each titled: Painting Photographs and Reading Photographs. This exhibition, Manner in Korean Paintings, is the second of his yet nascent curatorial practice. It features different works of various media—Korean ink, Korean mulberry paper (Jangji), rice paper, Bunchae, ink-and-wash, oil paints, digitized image stickers, etc.—formed in each artist's respective techniques and methods. To say a few, KIM Sun Doo presents his recent works that features his signature paint layering on mulberry paper; KIM Jiwon, presents her continued investigation on a single subject with her cockscombs; and MIN Jung Ki, presents his landscapes consisting of rivers and mountains, and people. Additionally, PARK Dae-Sung's traditional oriental paintings and calligraphy; YOO Geun Taek's recent works from New York that feature the objects of daily routines; LEE Kwang-Ho's cactus works and interview series which brings the viewer closer to the subject; JE Yeo-Ran's non-figurative paintings, and last but not least, the works of HONG Seung-Hye that focuses on the relation between tender spots between the space and the elements within the space. It is the objective of the exhibition to not only investigate the media and the methodologies, the materials and themes of the works, but also recognize the different aspects of respective manner, revealed from each artist's attitude towards their works. Furthermore, it is to explore how the lives, ideologies and values of the each have influenced their work process. ● The catalogue accompanying the exhibition includes interviews with each artists and contributing essays by art critics KIM Baik Gyun and JUNG Hyun. Moreover, it includes discussions on manner as techniques, and manner as attitude, featuring the artists from the two former franchises and from the current one. Furthermore, the reader will be able to see the art critics KIM and JUNG engaging in or monitoring the interviews, providing their insights and opinions on how to perceive and interpret the works within the contemporary Korean art scene. Finally, talks with the artists and the critics will be held two times during the course of the exhibition, to provide further understandings of the discourse in manners. ● The exhibition Manner in Korean Paintings provides a direct example of how and what the eight contemporary artists are painting, and live. Also, the catalogue gives readers the ways to understand the works through interviews and critical analyses, meanwhile suggest a sneak peek to the possibilities and dimensions of communication within paintings of Korea. We are hopeful that this exhibition will become a leading example of looking into the plausibility of 'manners' within the Korean art scene, the Korean manners, and will provide a solid platform for the future discourses on the painting of Korea. ■ HITE Foundation
