환생_Join me there

자하미술관은 3월 29일부터 4월 29일까지 작가 고상우의 네 번째 국내 개인전 『환생_Join me there』를 개최한다. ● 고상우는 퍼포먼스와 네거티브 기법의 사진작품으로 잘 알려져 있으며 해외에서는 이미 사진예술계에서 높은 평가를 받으며 굳건히 자신의 자리를 지키고 있다. 또한 국내뿐 아니라 뉴욕과 아시아를 비롯하여 유럽의 여러 국가에서 매우 활발하게 활동하고 있다.

작가는 그 동안 여성의 욕망, 남녀 간의 사랑, 그리고 사회적 문제의식 등을 주제로 작업해왔는데, 이번 개인전에서는 죽음을 넘어서 영원한 사랑을 염원하는 여인의 「환생」을 주제로 욕망, 죽음, 그리고 환생(reincarnation)에 포커스를 맞추었다. ● 작가는 사랑하는 이의 죽음을 맞이해야 했던 여인들을 찾아다니며 긴 시간 동안 인터뷰하고 모델로 참여하도록 하였으며, 그 과정을 통해 환생의 법칙을 하나씩 발견하고 기록했다.

환생은 과학적, 종교적으로 많은 설명이 필요하겠지만, 관객들로 하여금 누구나 공감할 수 있는 주제로 새로운 가치를 부여하기 위해 실재 존재했던 사람을 바탕으로 제작된 해골 모형과 유골을 오브제로 사용하여 서로 죽음을 넘어서 영원히 사랑을 나누는 장면을 연출하였으며, 그의 더욱 안정되고 성숙해진 기법과 화려한 색감의 발현으로 그 가치를 극대화하였다. ● 20여점의 작품과 퍼포먼스 영상도 함께 볼 수 있으며, 4월 21일 토요일 오후 3시에는 작가와의 대화가 진행될 예정이다. ■ 자하미술관

Zaha Museum is pleased to announce the 4th solo exhibition by Koh Sang Woo from March 29 to April 29, 2012. Koh Sang Woo is one of the most imposing figures in modern photography, where his unconventional visuals and provocative concepts rule, based on his performance and negative techniques. His innovative works continue to receive high praise and establishes his position firmly in modern photography. His first museum solo in his hometown is titled 『Join Me There』 is about the human yearning and the unbroken bond of love. ● Kon Sang Woo's past works has similar themes of human relationship and desire of men and women. His new work takes a different angle when dealing with the human bond and desire, focusing on the unknown. For this exhibition, he interviewed women who has experienced the death of their companions and asked them to represent their story though his media by being the models in the new series. He then used the skull, skeleton and the bones made based on the real people as objects, and created the scenes where they are sharing their endless love beyond death and made them to reconnect in spirit communication. The expression in his splendid concept and color of his new work make us feel the sublime beauty that transcends to death. As artist states, "If we believe in reincarnation, then we believe in universal law, and then if we believe in universal law, I believe the endless love is possible through their mind, spirit and soul. ● Koh Sang Woo is a Korean artist based in New York, recent public exhibitions include Sungkok Museum and the HOMA Museum (Seoul), the Lancaster Museum of Art (Pennsylvania), the Queens Museum (New York) and the 798 Beijing Biennial, alongside solo exhibitions at galleries in London, New York, Hong Kong and Seoul. ● Koh's works have been shown internationally and are held in various collections worldwide.
