Swoosh, Swoosh, Swoosh !!!

스포츠는 사람의 인생과 닮아 있다. 인간의 삶을 단편적으로 극대화시켜 보여주는 것이기 때문에 인생의 축소판이라고 말하는 것이다. 그도 그럴 것이 국가를 대표 하는 경기, 지역을 대표하는 경기들을 보면서 더욱더 감정이 이입되기 때문이다. 이 안에서 경쟁은 시작된다. 우리를 대표하는 그들이 꼭 이기길 바라며 승리를 염원한다. 패배는 생각할 수 없다. 오직 승리만을 바랄 뿐... 그래서 그들은 상대를 제압하기 위해, 승리를 쟁취하고자 끊임없이 반복해서 움직이며, 기술을 익혀 나간다. 실수는 용납되지 않는다. 결코... 오직 승리만이, 1위만이 살아남는 곳이 되어간다. 패자는 기억될 리 없는 냉혹한 승부의 세계인 것이다.

지금의 현대 사회와 이 점이 많이 닮아 있다. 더 강력한 파워와 스펙을 찾는다. 또한 그들은 더욱더 강력한 룰로써 우리를 더욱 몰아세워 간다. 그 안에 안착하기 위해 우리는 그들이 만들어낸 룰에 맞추려 쉼 없이 움직인다. 그것만이 이 사회를 살아가는 최적의 방법인 것처럼 그들이 만들어낸 울타리를 벗어난 이들은 낙오자, 패배자로 낙인찍히고 만다.

하지만 안착한 사람들 내부에조차 분명 패배자는 있을 것이다. 서로가 서로를 짓밟아 올라가는 진흙탕 싸움인 것이다. 마치 끝이 없는 뫼비우스의 띠와 같은 삶이다. 경쟁의 구도 속에서의 희망을 찾고 싶다. 밝은 미래를 개척해 나아가고 싶다. 이 안에서 작업적 모토를 찾게 되었다. 현 시대를 살아가는 인간의 모순적 삶을 표현하고 싶었다. 그 안에 종속되고 싶은 동시에 그 울타리를 벗어나고자 하는 현대인의 모습, 즉 벗어나고 싶으나 벗어날 수 없는 상태를 비행기로 표현하였다. 이것이 오늘날을 살아가는 현대인의 모습인 것이다. ■ 최영록

Sports resembles life. We say sports is a microcosm of life because it highlights some aspects of human lives. For example, the games we feel the deepest involvement are regional or international competitions. And there, the spirit of emulation is aroused. We are filled with the desire for OUR team to win at all costs. Defeat is out of the question. In order to dominate over other teams, to win victories, players never stop moving and practicing new skills. A mistake is not allowed. NEVER. Only the victors and the No. 1s can survive in the dog-eat-dog place, where losers are easily forgotten. The sports and the modern society are very much alike in those aspects. They both seek for more power, more credentials (so-called 'Spec'). Also, with the rules getting stricter and stricter, they are prodding us harder and harder. As a result, we are forever on the move trying to stick to their rules and to get settled; as if that is the only way to live in this world, anyone who goes outside of the fence they built are branded as a failure, a loser. But even among those who settled someone must be defeated. So again, they have to fight tooth and nail to stay ahead. It truly is like the Mobius strip. That is where the motifs of my works came from--I want to find hope in this world of competition, I want to try to make our future brighter. My goal was to show the paradoxical condition of humankind--with the planes being the contemporary people, who want to belong to and, at the same time, escape from the space inside the fence. For I believe this is exactly where we stand and how we feel. ■ CHOIYOUNGROK
