『Knocking』展은 "그리다"라는 공통점을 가지고 회화의 기초에 충실하면서 각기 다른 방식으로 세상에 대한 자신의 견해를 피력하고, 이를 통해 관객의 의식을 "두드리는" 4명의 작가를 소개하는 전시이다. 참여 작가들은 평범함을 뛰어넘어 날카로운 직관과 상상력으로 세상을 바라보고 이를 자신만의 독자적인 언어와 매체로 보여준다. ● 임성수는 일상적인 상황과 인간의 욕망으로 소비되고 있는 현대사회의 통상적인 구조를 만화적인 이미지와 캐릭터를 이용하여 화면에 배치해나간다. 가볍고 친근한 이미지 이면에는 냉소적이거나 부정적 성향이 동시에 담겨있다. 작가의 비판적 제스처는 장난스런 즐거움으로 역전되어 화면을 구성한다.

김봄의 작품은 사람들이 풍경을 보는 다양한 시점, 관점에서부터 시작된다. 그녀는 탐험가와 같은 관점으로 세상의 모든 풍경을 하나도 놓치지 않고 세밀하게 기록하고 있다. 같은 공간, 풍경 속에서 각기 다른 각도로 풍경을 해석해 나가는데 한 장소 안에서 다양한 사건과 기억이 공존한다. '그 곳(남산, 한강, 부산 등)'을 특징짓는 강한 모티브들이 산수(山水), 사건, 주변 건물들과 어울려 배치된다. 아이콘들은 실제 지도를 바탕으로 재구성되는데 꼴라쥬된 이미지들을 흩어 놓듯 재조합된다.

권순영은 기억과 상상이 만나 형성된 캐릭터들의 세계를 통해서 연약한 존재들의 공포, 고립과 고통이라는 보편적인 인간감정의 영역을 표현하고 있다. 특정한 기승전결 없이 상처와 고통이라는 정서적 상태를 형상화하고 있는 그녀의 작업 속 캐릭터들은 훼손된 신체를 통해 심리적 고통들과 오버랩 되어 판타지적인 화면을 만들어낸다.

매일매일 반복되는 일상을 화면에 담아낸 박수형은 바쁘게 돌아가는 현대사회의 모습을 인물 군상을 통해 표현하고 있다. 어디로 가는지도 모르면서 무작정 올라가려 하는 사람들, 무리 속에 휩쓸려 다니는 듯한 군상은 목표도 꿈도 없이 그저 하루하루를 살아가기에 바쁜 현대의 인간군상을 보여주고 있다. 군집된 사람들이라는 익숙한 이미지들의 조합을 통해 생경한 풍경을 창조하여 구상적이면서도 추상적인 화면을 만들어낸다.

이렇듯 각각의 작품들은 작가들의 눈에 비친 세상과, 일상의 풍경, 그리고 이면에 내재된 현대 사회와 현대인들의 다양한 면면을 표현하고 있다. 수많은 이야기 속에서 우리의 모습도 어렵지 않게 찾아낼 수 있다. 서로 다른 시선으로 풀어 낸 작가들의 다채로운 세상의 모습이 관람객의 감성을 두드리며 자유로운 연상과 공감을 이끌어 내길 기대해 본다. ■ 이현정

CAIS Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition "Knocking" by 4 artists having the "painting"as a common quality in their storytelling of the world. While keeping the basic painting method, the artist each in their own way reveals one's view toward the world "knocking on" the consciousness of the audience. Each participant in their own personal terms and medium contemplates the world with a piercing intuition and imagination beyond ordinariness. ● Sung Soo Lim arranges an ordinary composition of modern society being consumed by transient circumstance and human desire, by adapting cartoonish image and characters. On the reverse side of its lightness and rather intimate image, underlies either cynical or pessimistic inclination simultaneously. Such critical gesture brings out a twist to the scene through a playful pleasure. ● Works by Bom Kim begins from a various viewpoint, perspectives on landscape. She elaborately records every detail in close examination of any scene of the world as the explorer does. Within a single place, various incidents and memories coexist through many interpretations of a scene through diverse angles. The strong motives that specify 'places such as Mt. Nam, Han River, Busan, etc.' harmonize with landscape, incident, as well as surrounding building structures. Icons are recomposed based on an actual map, recombining the collaged images. ● Soon Young Kwon, through world of characters formed by memory and imagination, expresses the realm of universal human emotion such as fear, isolation, and pain of feeble beings. The characters within her works, without a specific development, creates a fantasy like scene while being overlapped by mental pains through injured physical body that embodies wounds and pain on emotional state. ● Through a large group of people, Soo Hyung Park depicts modern society repetitiously moving on day by day. The works show people blindly climbing up with no definite destination, people swept away by the throng just seems to busily survive day after day without goals or dreams. Such combination of familiar scene creates crude scenery that becomes both concrete and abstract. ● In this way, each work carries the world reflected upon the artist's eyes, daily life, and various sides of people inherent in modern society. It is also easy to discover our own among those numerous stories. We hope that CAIS Gallery Hong Kong will knock on each and every one's sensibility as well as educe head trip and sympathy through its varied feature of world reinterpreted by the artists with diverse perspectives. ■ LEEHYUNJUNG
