The Mountains

산을 오르는 일은 우리를 겸손하게 만든다. 평지에 익숙한 우리에게, 에스컬레이터와 엘리베이터에 익숙한 우리에게, 산은 잘 쓰지 않던 근육을 움직이게 한다. 산에서는 안 쓰던 근육뿐 아니라 시간 에 대한 감각도 꺼내어 써야 한다. 평지에서보다 빨리 찾아오는 밤은 낮에 싱그럽게 맡았던 흙내음와 풀내음도 으스스하고 축축한 냄새로 바꾸어 버리기 십상이다. 도시에서 분단위로 시간을 계산하여 이동수단을 결정하던 사람들도 산을 오를 때는 자신의 몸보다 수백만배 큰 산이 이끄는 대로 걸을 수 밖에 없고, 있는 줄도 몰랐던 자신의 걸음소리도 듣고 숨쉬는 소리도 듣게 된다.

의식의 중심이 바뀌면서, 늘 거기 있던 산이 이제는 친근한 벗 같고 너그러운 어머니 같다. 그 품이 좋아 더 깊이 들어가다 보면 미끄러질 듯 가파른 오르막이 끝나는가 했더니 이제는 온몸이 잔뜩 긴장되는 급경사 내리막이다. 다치지만 말자하고 안간힘으로 버티며 정신 없이 걷다 보면, 평지에선 볼 수 없던 웅장한 산의 모습이 선물같이 눈에 들어온다. ● 먹에 만가지 색이 있다던 선조들의 말이 있지만, 산이야말로 만가지 모습을 가지지 않았을까. 올라가면 올라갈수록 정수를 드러내는 산은 계절마다 보이는 얼굴도 다르다. 풍경이란 저 멀리 보이는 경치가 아니라 마음의 눈으로 본 산과 물과 나무라는 걸 알려준 작가 임채욱이 산을 담아내는 작업은 그런 점에서 주목할 만하다. 강함과 부드러움, 장대함과 친근함, 강인함과 고요함의 감정이 섞인 산의 모습을 읽는 법을 가르쳐준다고나 할까.

강인하고 남성적인 설악산이 부드러운 운무에 덮혔을 때의 모습, 길게 겹쳐진 능선의 우아함을 자랑하는 덕유산이 가로로 긴 화면에서 보여주는 아름다움, 감히 다가가기 어려운 지리산의 장엄한 모습이 그의 렌즈를 통해 우리에게 다가온다. ● 한국의 산을 주제로 작업한 그의 신작들은 홍콩의 신화갤러리를 통해 처음 소개된다. 국토의 7할이 산인 우리 땅의 아름다움은 평야보다는 산에 있다. 수년간 산을 오르며 작업한 그의 신작을 발표하는 자리에서 우리 산의 표정을 읽는 고즈넉한 시간 가지시길 바란다. ■ Christie Shin

Climbing mountains is a humbling experience. It forces us to use the dormant muscles of our body, which is used to walk on the flat ground or to stand on the escalators and lifts. It also urges us to exercise our senses of time differently, as it gets dark much earlier than it does below the mountains. The fresh air of the earth and the grass that you breath in the day time is quick to change into wet and creepy in the dark night there. You, who calculate the time by minute and decide whether to take bus or taxi to make it on time, have no other choice than to walk as the mountains lead them. You're surprised to hear your own sound of walking and breathing. ● As you have the awareness of being surrounded by this unusual environment, the mountains now seem like friend and mother. You enjoy this refreshing place so much and go deeper into the mountains. Then you meet steep heels challenging and pushing you into tough paths, which bring you to a magnificent view. ● Our ancestors said the ink has ten thousand of colors, but I believe the mountains have ten thousand of images. The higher and deeper you go into, the more mysterious valleys and hills they reveal. Their faces also change according to the season. ● Artist Lim ChaeWook has been teaching us how to take the sceneries personally: you see the land, mountains, water and trees with your mind and embrace it. He now shows us how to read the faces of mountains. The tough and soft, the magnificent and friendly, the grandiose and calm are all mixed in his images. ● The manly SeoRak mountains certainly don't mind to be bothered by the wet and soft cloud. Long layers of the ridges DeokYu mountains are never boring but surprisingly elegant. Jiri mountains' daring face is always mysterious. ● Two thirds of the territory is mountainous in Korea. The beauty of this country lies in the mountains. In his solo exhibition, Lim ChaeWook will tell you how he interprets the beauty of Korea.
