먼 산 The Distant Mountains

『먼 산』은 사진이라는 매체를 통해 전통회화의 맥을 되짚어 올라가는 작업의 일환이다. 첫 번째 작품인 『검은 빛』이 농묵표현의 사진적 번역이라면, 『먼 산』은 담묵사용의 그러한 작업이라 할 수 있을 것이다. 이를 위해 수묵화에서 가장 먼 곳에 위치한 희뿌연 산을 전면에 부각시켰으며, 또한 우리의 산이 가진 선의 아름다움을 드러내기 위해 화면비율을 극대화하여 산을 배치하였다. 그럼으로써 산 위의 허虛의 공간을 드러낼 수 있는 공간적/심리적 여유를 얻을 수 있게 되었다.

이 연작은 수묵산수화의 현대성에 대한 고민을 담고 있다기보다는, 산수화가 주는 의미와 역할에 중요성을 두고 있다고 해야 할 것이다. 일상의 번잡함을 잠시 잊고 바라보는 별세계. 하지만 이 세계는 각자의 마음속에 있는 먼 산을, 혹은 그 자신을 바라보게 하기 위한 하나의 방편일 따름이다. 진경眞景이란 외부의 풍경이 아니라 우리 내면의 모습이기 때문이다.

예술에 부여된 가치와 역할을 헤아려보는 것은 쉽지 않은 일이다. 그저 우리 자신을 비추는 거울이 되고, 단순히 이미지의 여백을 제시하는 게 아니라 바로 이 여백 앞에 서 있는 제각기의 삶의 빈 공간을 마련해주며, 산수화를 보며 '자연 속의 나'를 그려보았던 옛 사람들의 정서와 정신을 다시 불러일으키는 작품이란 무엇인지 숙고할 뿐이다. ■ 박정훈

The Distant Mountains is a part of works to take the East-asian landscape's pulse through photograph. Dark Light, my first serial work, is photographic translation of deep ink-and-wash painting and The Distant Mountains is of light one. To represent the light tone and the beauty of the natural line, I brought the mountaintops in foggy mist placed at the furthermost end of the traditional landscape to the fore, and thereby spatial, emotional emptiness was created. ● The Distant Mountains would have not modernity and its concern of ink-and-wash painting, but the painting's role and meaning. Another world where we look at to get away from it all. This world, however, is just a means to let us contemplate the distant mountains in our mind or ourselves. That is because real landscape is not the external state, but a reflection of the inner side. ● It's not easy to understand what value or role is granted to art. I only think of artistic work to be a mirror for ourselves, give empty space of life as well as the space of image, and impart a new meaning to emotion and spirit of the ancients who looked beyond oneself-in-nature through landscape paintings. ■ Bahk J-huhn
