구조와 조각 Structure and Fragments

이것은 일상의 평범한 사물이 비범한 수단을 통해 변화되는 경험 속으로 당신을 부르는 초대장이다. 현실 속의 사물은 추상화되고, 변형되고, 마침내 그 가장 원초적인 물질 상태로 되돌아간다. 책, 테이프, 가위, 연필, 종이, 카세트테이프, 이 모든 것이 마찬가지이다. 바로 이 과정이 끼라르테 & 오르네라스 작업의 핵심이다. 그들은 항상 의미를 변용하고 전용한다. 구체적인 사물을 취하고, 그 형태와 기능을 포용하며, 궁극적으로는 자신들이 원하는 작업으로 그것을 변형시킨다. 이것은 비구조화된 길이지만, 동시에 우리 눈앞에 놓인 바로 그 사물을 통해 구조화되고 파편화된 길이다. 끊임없이 변하고, 빚어지고, 늘 그렇듯 전혀 새로운 어떤 것으로 진화해가는 그런 길이다. ● "구조와 조각들"의 순환론적 성격은 관객이 형태와 그 기능의 변신을 이해해가는 여정 전반의 지침이 된다. 이 여정에서 관객은 실제와 추상, 자연적인 질서에 대한 기존의 지각에 의문을 품게 된다. 가령, 구조가 먼저인가 조각이 먼저인가? 우리 자신보다 먼저인 것은 진정으로 무엇인가? 질문은 제안하고, 혼란을 주고, 우리를 눈뜨게 만든다. 대답은 결국 우리 자신 안에 있으며 우리보다 앞선 무언가가 그것을 안내한다. 이번 전시는 단순하면서도 복잡한 역설적인 회화와 설치작품들을 통해 이러한 정체성, 이러한 개념들을 강력하게 밀고 당긴다.

끼라르테 & 오르네라스는 여기서 그치지 않고 한 걸음 더 나아간다. 회화와 설치작품을 최초로 함께 전시함으로써 창작의 전 과정을 관객과 함께 공유하는 것이다. 역동적인 힘과 추진력이 개념적 추상을 실현해나가는 과정과 구체적인 작품들 전체를 관류하며 빛난다. 작품들을 존재하고, 유희하고, 함께 이야기한다. 이 대화는 전체의 부분이다. 부분적으로 파편화되고 부분적으로 구조화되지만, 그럼에도 언제나 전체이다. 완결성은 회화와 설치 작품들을 동시에 "구조와 조각"으로 규정하며 모든 것을 유연하게 결합하고, 연결한다. ● 구조는 튼튼하게 자리한다. 비유적인 것을 축어적인 것을 향해 이어주고, 3차원 작업으로 2차원 영역 위에 제시한다. 회화와 설치작업의 실현이 공존한다. 최종 결과물과 영감이 나란히 자리한다. 우리는 뮤즈 그리고 작품이 존재하게 된 과정, 곧 보통 작업실 안에서만 발전되고 볼 수 있는 과정을 동시에 경험한다.

This is an invitation to experience the transformation of ordinary tools through extraordinary means. The actual tool is abstracted, transformed and ultimately brought back to its original materialistic state - be it a book, tape, scissor, pencil, paper, or a cassette tape. This process is the heart of Quirarte & Ornelas, always adapting and appropriating the meaning – accepting the actual object, embracing the form and function, and transforming it into the desired work. This is a unstructured path, yet structured, fragmented by the material before us; a path changing, molding and evolving into something new and fresh, always true to form. ● The cyclical nature of Structures and Fragments leads us through a journey of understanding the metamorphosis of the form and its function. This journey questions our perception of real and abstract, of the natural order - what came first, the structure or the fragment, and of what really stands before us. Questions suggest, perplex, and enlighten. The answers are ultimately found within us, guided by what stands before us. This body of work powerfully pushes and pulls these identities, these notions, through paradoxically simple and complex paintings and installations. ● Quirarte & Ornelas take us one step further, sharing the entire creative process by exhibiting both paintings and installations for the first time. The momentum and dynamic force shines through the realization of the conceptual abstraction and actual works existing, playing, and speaking together. This dialogue is part of the whole. Part fragmented and part structured, but always whole. Completeness combines and connects fluidly, defining the paintings and installations simultaneously as Structure and Fragment. ● The structure stands strong; bridging the figurative into the literal, presenting on two-dimensional fields with three dimensional execution. The actualization of the paintings and installations coexist – the final alongside the inspiration, respectively. We simultaneously experience the muse and how the works came to be, a process usually developed and shown only in the studio. ● Quirarte & Ornelas make everyday tools the focus and give these traditional materials deeper meaning. The construction and deconstruction of the works are cyclical; working together in both structured and fragmented fashions.
