Let there be Light ● 박진원의 작품세계는 컴퓨터의 LED 빛과 시간의 연속성을 표현하는 시퀀서 Sequencer의 차용으로 귀결되는 자연과 빛에 대한 서정적인 메시지의 은유이다. 이번 전시에서 주요 모티브로 재현되는 빛은 작품의 공간적 한계를 LED 평면으로 대체하여 면의 형태와 화면의 이중적 구조가 상호간 소통하는 고도의 관념적이고 절제된 공간미를 제시하며 작가의 독자적인 예술적 표현 영역을 확장 시키고 있다. 작품에서 표현된 섬세한 자연의 아름다움과 시간의 연속성에 따라서 변화하는 공간은 모든 은유와 경이로움의 집합체로 집약되며 현대적 풍경에 대한 새로운 모색을 가능하게 한다.

이번 전시작품의 주제는 작가의 예술 철학인 인류의 보편적인 진리와 절대적인 미의 구현이다. 박진원은 삶과 예술을 동일시하고 마치 삶을 탐험하듯이 예술을 실험하며 그의 예술적 영역을 확장하고 있다. 그는 구도자적인 작업방식으로 철저히 장인적인 과정을 중요시한다. 이것은 그가 직접 선택하는 재료들과 그것을 다루는 방식 자체가 매우 독창적인 것으로 그의 작품에서 중요한 부분을 차지하고 있다. 새로운 작품 화이트 캔버스에 성경 말씀인 요한복음 8장 12절 「나는 세상의 빛이니 나를 따르는 자는 어둠에 다니지 아니하고 생명의 빛을 얻으리라」 의 주제로 캔버스에 불빛이 천천히 들어오면서 예수님의 형상이 나타나는 작품에서 작가는 인간의 이성과 우주의 진리를 한 화면에 융합하고 있다. 빛은 최초의 창조물이며 빛을 경험하는 것은 궁극적인 실제와 만나는 것이다. 빛은 시작과 끝에서 연결되며 빛을 발하는 것은 거룩함에서 탄생한 새로운 생명을 상징한다. 이 작품에서 작가는 빛으로 창조의 원리이자 진리에 궁극적으로 다가가려 했으며 인간과 세계에 대한 인식을 풍부하게 하며 작가 특유의 아름다운 시적 영상을 창출해 내고 있다.

한국 최초의 개신교 순교자인 영국인 선교사 로버트 저메인 토마스 Robert Jemain Thomas의 얼굴 모습을 밀알을 주요 작품 재료로 하여 작업한 화면 뒤편으로 LED 빛이 들어오면서 동시에 예수님의 형상이 오버랩 되는 이 작품은 박진원 작가가 영국유학 시절 토마스 선교사가 어린 시절 다녔던 웨일즈에 위치한 하노버 교회에 봉헌된 작품과 동일한 주제로 제작되었다. 요한복음 12장 24절 「내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 한 알의 밀알이 땅에 떨어져 썩지 아니하면 한 알 그대로 있고 죽으면 많은 열매를 맺느니라」 의 내용에 감명받은 작가가 토마스 선교사에게 경의의 표시로 제작한 이 작품은 불빛이 없을때는 토마스 선교사의 이미지가 보여지며 불빛이 들어오면 예수님의 형상이 나타나는 이중적 구도의 표현으로 작가는 지속적으로 흐르는 LED 빛과 시간의 영원성을 통하여 무의식의 세계와 현실의 세계가 공존하는 이미지들을 회화 안으로 복원시키는 탁월한 예술적 감각을 보여주고 있다.

전통 한국화에 기반을 두고 있는 박진원의 작품들은 수묵화와 비슷한 모노톤의 컨셉트로 시적이며 또한 지극히 명상적이다. 산업화된 현대성을 상징하는 실버의 독특한 컬러배치로 화면내의 확장된 영역을 제공하며 깊이있는 빛의 공간감을 구현하고 있는 대다수의 작품들은 현대를 살아가는 사람들의 소박한 하루와 덧없는 일상 그리고 좌절된 꿈과 길 잃은 듯한 고독의 상징성을 내포하고 있다. 미대 재학시절 회화보다 음악을 더 좋아했던 작가는 미술이라는 장르에서는 발견할 수 없었던 마음으로 듣는 음악과 시간의 흐름에 따라 변화되는 인간의 감정에 매력을 느꼈으며 특히 음악에서 변화되는 노트들의 고저 장단의 아름다운 변화들이 사람의 마음을 크게 움직이는 음악의 힘에 경의를 표하게 되었으며 더불어 한국화의 전통적인 특징이라고 할 수 있는 여백의 공간을 첨단의 LED 빛으로 변화된 공간으로 변화시킴으로써 LED 컬러의 변화가 시간의 흐름을 표현해 주면서 음악에서 감지되는 시간예술의 감흥을 평면회화의 한계인 멈춰진 시간표현도 극복하게 되었다고 그는 작가노트에서 언급하고 있다.

이렇듯 음악에 대한 동경으로 90년대 유명그룹사운드 컬트에서 활동하기도 했던 작가는 시각적인 음악에 대한 연구와 발전에 관심이 많았다. 음악에 대한 조예가 깊었던 박진원은 전자적 특성의 사운드를 원하는 음파로 창조하여 편집할 수 있는 컴퓨터 음악 전자장치 MIDI _ Musical Instrument Digital Interface 프로그램에서 아이디어를 창출하여 사운드의 변화가 아닌 빛의 변주로 대체한 작업들을 선보여 왔으며 이러한 그의 음악과 융합된 작품들은 극도로 개념적이며 우주가 탄생하던 순간의 팽창과 시간의 영속성을 상징하는 섬세한 공명으로 관람객들과 조우하게 한다. 작가는 그림을 그리는 행위는 작품을 통해서 자신의 내면정서를 보는 이와 공유하는 것이라고 한다. 위대한 예술은 영원 속에서 잡은 한 순간이라는 그의 예술적 인식을 나타내는 작품들은 단순한 회화가 아니라 서사적인 철학이다. 그의 작품은 처음부터 예상되었던 상식적인 주제의 깊이를 탐구하기보다는 자연의 아름다움과 인류의 보편적인 진리 추구에 다가가는 영원한 구원의 메시지를 단순한 선과 은은한 빛 그리고 투명한 여백으로 표현해내는 작가의 섬세한 시선에 존재한다. ■ 신현주

Let there be Light ● Artist Jin–Won Park's works use metaphors of nature and light that come down to use of sequencers expressing LED light of computers and time continuity. Light that's a key motif in this exhibition replaces his works' spatial limitation with LED's flat surface to suggest highly abstract and refrained spatial beauty where the shape of surface communicates with dual structure of screen and to expand scope of the artist's own artistic expression. The delicate beauty of nature and space that changes according to time continuity expressed at his works come all down to collections of metaphors and wonder and enable new ideas about modern scenery. ● The theme of this exhibition is realization of humans' universal truth and absolute beauty which are the artist's artistic philosophy. Jin-Won Park equates life with art, experiments art as if he's exploring life and expands his artistic area. He works like a truth seeker and thinks of artisan work process very important. This makes his choice of materials and the way he handles them very original, which makes up an important part of his works. In his new work with a theme of the Gospel of John 8:12 [I'm the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life] and he had light slowly turned on in a canvas, which shapes the figure of Jesus. In this work, the artist expresses humans' reason converges with the universe's truth in one screen. Light is the very first creation and experiencing light is to meet with ultimate reality. Light connects from the beginning to the end and lighting symbolizes a new life born out of heavenliness. In this work, the artist tries using light to approach principles of creation and truth, and enriches awareness of humans and the world while creating his own beautiful poetic image. ● In this work, behind the screen where he uses grains of wheat as a main material to express the face of Robert Jemain Thomas, Korea's first Protestant martyr and a British missionary turns on LED light while at the same time the figure of Jesus overlaps. This work has the same theme as that of the work which the artist learned about while studying in Britain and dedicated to Hannover Church located in Wales that Thomas went to as a child. The artist was moved by Gospel of John 12:24 [Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit] and created this work to express his respect to Thomas. This work expresses a dual structure; an image of Thomas without light and a figure of Jesus with light. Here, the artist shows an outstanding artistic sense that brings back images where unconscious world and reality co-exist into a painting. ● Jin-Won Park's works based on traditional Korean paintings has a concept of monotone similar to ink-and-wash paintings, are poetic and greatly meditative. His unique color arrangement of silver symbolizing industrialized modernization provides an expanded area in a screen. Most of his works that materialize deeper spatial sense of space have symbolic connotation such as a simple day, transient daily life, lost dreams and solitude of people living in modern times and who feel getting lost. The artist who loved music more than paintings while studying art in college found attractive human emotions that change according to music people listen to with their heart and to flow of time and cannot be discovered in art as a genre, paid respect to power of music that significantly moves people's mind with beautifully changing rhythm of high and low notes. Furthermore, he turns blanks which are traditional characteristic of Korean paintings into a changed space through LED light. He mentioned in his note that by doing this, he was able to make sure LED color change expresses flow of time while realizing inspiration of time art and overcoming a difficulty of expressing time that stands still, which is a limitation of flat paintings. ● Likewise, he played in a famous band called Cult in the 1990s out of his admiration for music and was greatly interested in study and development of visual music. Jin-Won Park who had profound knowledge of music came up with an idea from Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI), a computer music electronic device, program that enables people to create and edit electronic sound into sound waves they want. With this idea, he has introduced works where variation of light replaces sound changes. Such works that converge with his music are extremely abstract and have audience encounter with expansion at the moment when the universe was born and delicate resonance symbolizing permanence of time. The artist says drawing a painting is to share one's own inner sentiment with audience through works. His works representing his artistic awareness that great art is a moment grabbed in eternity are not simple paintings but narrative philosophy. In his works exists his delicate attention expressing beauty of nature and an eternal message of salvation approaching pursuit of humans' universal truth with simple lines, subtle light and transparent blanks rather than deeply exploring an obvious theme expected from the beginning. ■ Shin, Hyun-Ju
