The Texture Ⅰ

황금빛 질감을 찾아서 ● 초가지붕 아래 황토를 바른 담벼락 옆은 내가 기억하는 가장 오래된 놀이공간이었다. 어린 시절 나는 황토벽에 낸 봉창 아래에 기대어 앉아서, 처마 밑으로 떨어지는 낙숫물이 그리는 동그라미를 쳐다보고 있거나, 담벼락 아래서 자라는 풀들을 따서 바람에 날려 보내며 놀곤 했다. 추운 겨울날에도 붉은 빛을 띤 황토벽은 햇살을 받아 따뜻한 황금빛으로 빛났다. 겨울날 양지바른 담벼락에 기대어 놀던 그 어린 아이가 무심히 바라보았던 황토벽의 색과 질감은 세월이 흘러 어른이 된 지금의 감성과 어떤 연관이 있지나 않을까하는 생각이 들었다. 그래서 내 마음의 근원을 찾아갈 수 있을 것 같은 오래 된 황토벽을 찾아 무작정 시골 길을 헤매었다.

내가 찾는 오래된 황토 집은 이제는 시골에서도 찾기가 어려웠다. 황토에 짚과 물을 섞어서 발로 짓이긴 다음에, 대나무로 틀을 엮은 벽에 진득진득하게 짓이겨 발라서, 황토를 바른 이의 손맛이 그대로 전해지는 집을 찾아 헤맸다. 어쩌다 내가 찾는 그런 집을 발견해도 곧 허물어버릴 예정인 그 집의 벽에는 온갖 잡동사니들이 쌓여져 있어서 사진을 찍는데 어려움이 많았다. 황토벽에는 통나무 기둥이 있어 그것을 프레임 삼아 벽화처럼 보이게 하고 싶어서, 주변의 풀들을 담벼락 아래에 옮겨 심기도하고, 황토벽 앞에서 어린 시절을 떠올리며 그림자놀이도 하여보았다. 흙의 거친 질감의 효과를 높이기 위해서'검 프린트(gum print)' 방식을 택하였다. 수작업으로 해야만 하는 검 프린트는 시간이 많이 걸리고 육체적으로도 힘든 작업이었다. 감사하게도, 물속에 잠긴 이미지를 들여다보고 있으면, 꾸덕꾸덕 말라서 모세혈관처럼 균열이 간 황토벽의 바슬바슬한 촉감이 손끝에 전해지는 것 같은 즐거움이 있어 이 작업을 계속 할 수 있었다. 어린 시절 심심하고 무료한 시간동안 아무런 생각 없이 기대고 앉아 있었던 그 황토벽의 질감은 나의 무의식의 바닥에 깔려 있을지도 모른다. 어린 아이의 감각으로 본 기억 속의 황토벽의 느낌을 찾는 것은 쉽지 않았다. 아마도 내 사진에 표현된 것은 지금까지 살아오면서 학습된'기억질감'이었을 것이다. ■ 임명희

The TextureＩ ● The oldest memory of my childhood play space is the vacant lot under a thatched roof, beside an ocher wall. When I was a kid, I used to sit crouched below the paper window and watched raindrops make circles as they fall from the edge of the eaves or picked out some weeds from the ground and flew them away. The ocher wall gleamed golden in the sun. What thoughts were on her mind? The little girl spending time beside the sunny wall on a winter day. She became a woman and went out with a camera to find the golden texture she couldn't forget for more than fifty years. But the original Korean house built with red clay was hard to find even in countryside. Mix thatch and water with red clay and knead them. Plaster the bamboo-framed wall with the sticky clay so sincerely that you can almost feel the soul of the maker. This is how the house was made. Sometimes I could find the kind but many of them were to be pulled down soon and old junks were heaped up beside the walls. There were log columns on the wall and I wanted to take a picture by using them as frames, somewhat like a mural. I tried moving the grass and planting it under the wall, and even making shadow pictures on it. I chose the 'gum print' method to accentuate the rough texture of clay. Gum print took my time and energy as it required manual work. Thankfully, when I was looking at the image submerged in water, I could imagine the pleasant sense of touch of crumbly ocher wall that had been dried up in the shape of capillaries, and continue the hard work. Does the texture we have seen in childhood have something to do with our emotion? Searching for the memory of childhood feeling wasn't easy. Perhaps the thing expressed in my picture may be the learned 'the texture which is memorized ' through the whole days of my past. ■ LIMMYOUNGHEE
