동양화란 무엇일까? 흔히들 알고 있는 동양화에 대한 새로운 이해가 필요한 시점이다. 대부분 사람들은 '동양화는 수묵화 또는 산수화'라는 인식의 틀을 공유하고 있을 것이다. 따라서 동양화를 떠올릴 때 재료와 소재를 범주로 한 한계적 접근방식에 익숙하다. 그리고 동양화는 당연히 전통을 지켜야할, 그래서 과거의 지위와 자태를 유지해야 할 고유하고, 소중한 우리만의 미술로 대접하고 있는 현실이다.

이번 'Extend'전은 현대미술 속에서의 동양화의 새로운 인식에 대한 질문과 해답을 찾는데 방향을 두고 있다. 그럼 '현대미술 속에서의 동양화란 무엇일까?'에 대한 고민에 답을 해보자. '동양화는 동양의 미술이다'라는 대답이 어떨까. 유화나 아크릴, 비디오 등 서양의 매체를 사용하는 동양(한국을 포함)의 작가들이 서양의 재료와 기법을 차용하고 응용하는 것일 뿐, 그들이 서양인은 아닌 것이다. 따라서 서양의 재료를 쓰던, 동양의 재료를 쓰던 작가가 동양에서, 한국에서 숨을 쉬고 작업하고 있다면 그들의 작업은 당연히 동양화가 되는 것이다. 마찬가지로 수묵, 산수 등 일반인들에게 낯익은 전통의 재료와 소재를 차용하는 작가만이 동양의 화가, 한국의 화가는 아니다. 그들은 그저 전통의 재료를 사용하는 현대의 작가들인 것이다.

'Extend'는 이미 잘 알고 있고, 또 이해되었다고 오해하는 편견과 선입견으로부터 벗어남에서 시작된다. 수묵=동양화, 유화=서양화라는 등식의 인식보다는 동양의 작가, 서양의 작가, 한국의 작가, 중국의 작가. 그들이 뿜어내는 향(香)에 관심의 초점을 두어야 한다. 작가는 지리, 민족, 환경, 언어, 경제 등 자신이 살아온, 현재 살고 있는 환경에 영향을 받고 있다. 작가가 호흡해온 시간과 공간의 환경에서 작가들은 자신만의 주제와 소재를 찾아 자신만의 고유한 향을 만들어 가는 것이다. ■ 권정윤

What is Oriental Painting? It is time to have new understanding about Oriental painting which people know commonly. Most of people probably understand that Oriental painting is ink-and wash painting or landscape painting. So if people think of Oriental painting, then they usually consider often materials and subject matter only and it is the reality that Oriental painting is treated like it is traditional precious art and its status and figure should be protected and preserved. ● This Exhibition 'Extend' is aiming at finding answer and question about new understanding of Oriental painting in Modern Art. What is answer to the question about what Oriental painting in Modern Art is? What about this answer like 'Oriental painting is the art of Asia'? Asian artists including Korean artists just use western media such as oil, acrylic and video and western materials and they are not western people. Therefore whether they use western materials or Asian materials, if the artists are in Korea, Asia and breathing and working then the pieces of them is Oriental painting. Likewise Not every artist who use traditional materials and subject matter which are familiar with ordinary people like ink-and wash painting or landscape painting are called Oriental painter or Korean painter. They are just modern artists who use just traditional materials. ● Exhibition 'Extend' is started by getting out of prejudice about something is well understood. We should focus on the scent of the artists from Korea, China, Western, Asia than equality like Ink-and wash painting = Oriental painting, Oil painting = western painting. Artists are affected by environment which they are living such as area, nation, language and economy.
