Monologue S#

일상을 바라보는 경이로운 시선 ● 물건은 어떤 식으로든 누군가의 손길을 거친다. 어떤 것은 세심한 손길을 거치고 어떤 것은 거친 손길을 거친다. 어떤 것에서는 자부심 가득한 손길이 묻어나고, 어떤 것에서는 조심스럽고 겸손한 손길이 묻어난다. 이들 중에는 제 기능을 충분히 발휘하면서 소박한 모습들로 평범하며 너무도 친숙한 오브제들이 존재한다. 이러한 대상들을 경험과 호기심, 공감의 기재를 이용해 자신이 몸담고 있는 세상을 이해하고, 그러한 이해 속에서 어떤 아이디어를 이끌어내는 관찰자의 시선으로 바라보고자한다. 오늘날처럼 시각이미지가 강력한 시대는 일상이 곧 시각문화이다. 넘치는 시각문화의 홍수 속에서 우리 주변에 공기처럼 만연해 있지만 그런 이유로 해서 당연한 사물들을 수집하여 일상속의 경이로움을 찾고 사물에 대한 다른 시각을 제시하고자 하는 작업을 하고자 한다.

「걸리버 여행기」에서는 시선에 따라 인간의 모습과 환경이 다르게 나타나는 내용을 통하여 인간에 대한 다양한 풍자를 보여주고 있다. 소인국과 거인국 그리고 다양한 세계 속의 여행을 통해서 사물에 대한 생각이 고정되어 볼 수가 없음을 알게 된다. 거인국에 들어가 소인이 된 걸리버에게는 항상 친근한 대상일수 있는 귀여운 고양이와 강아지가 한순간에 가장 위협적인 존재가 되어 그 속에서는 그들의 노리개가 될 수 있는 것이고, 소인국에 들어가 거인이 된 걸리버에게는 가장 크고 위대한 권력을 지닌 자들의 모습조차도 장난감들의 하찮은 움직임으로 보일수도 있는 너무나 대상의 의미가 사라져 보이게 된다. 또한 대리석을 부드럽게 하여 바늘꽂이로 사용하는 엉뚱한 과학자가 있는 나라 등을 통해 바라보는 시선과 사고를 바꾸어서 발견하게 된 낯선 세계를 알아가게 된다. 평범함과 익숙함이 보는 이의 시선에 따라 의미가 크게 변화함을 볼 수 있다.

"땅 아래 바닥을 바라보고 이러한 소소한 주변이 소인이 되어 바라보니 거대한 풍경이 되어 나타난다. 늘 옆에 있던 흠집 많은 컵 하나가 한참을 올라가야 하는 푸른 산 위에 바위가 되고 또는 속을 들여다 볼 수 없는 동굴이 되며. 무심코 편안하게 앉아만 있던 아주 오래된 나무 의자 속에서 커다란 힘으로 짓누르는 기념비적인 기둥을 찾아내기도 한다. 매일매일 사용하던 수건 안에서 넓고 넓은 하얗게 쌓인 눈을 찾아낼 수도 있다."_걸리버 여행기

이러한 시선을 통하여 진실이라 여기고 있는 보이는 그대로의 세상이 있는 그대로가 아니라 어찌 보면 그 속에 숨은 그림들을 품고 있는지도 모른다. 이러한 시각의 여정을 통해서 현재 내가 서있는 이 자리(in this place) 일상 속에서의 경이로운 걸작을 찾아내고자 하며 이들의 새로운 모습을 제시하고자 한다. ■ 이주은

All things go through someone's hand. Some may be touched by a delicate hand and some may have gone through rough hands. Some give an impression that they have been handled by a person with pride and some by a cautious or modest person. From these objects, we get an impression. Some have worked for us and remain a simple picture within our minds; an unsophisticated picture that stays with us; 'objets' that are very simple and familiar to us. We use these subjects to build our experience and satisfy our curiosity. The materials connect us to everyday, bringing an understanding of the world you are in; I want to see through an observer's eye, the idea is abstracted from inside this understanding. Currently, the visual image is strongly appealing, ours is a visual culture. We are constantly exposed to visual media, they surround us, as ubiquitous as the air; for this reason, I want to present another side of these objects; the observer notices their tactile dimension and is filled with a sense of wonder that an everyday object can convey such a richness of meaning. ● The novel 'Gulliver`s Travels', satirizes the human state. Gulliver, the quintessential traveller, experiences new and wildly different humans and landscapes that shape his perceptions. As we follow his travels, we realise that our own ideas of an image cannot remain the same. We, like Gulliver, have been exposed to 'Lilliput' and 'Brobdingnag' and we are shaped by that. In 'Brobdingnag' the familiar cute cats and dogs are transformed into the most dangerous of animals and Gulliver becomes like a toy in their game. In 'Lilliput', Gulliver is cast as a giant among tiny men. He looks down on them disdainfully; their petty doings are beneath his interest. Whether Lord or servant it is all the same to him. We take the journey with him and our values are called in to question by each new experience. We see a scientist, who has made a shard of limestone very smooth to use it as a needle holder; we learn about an unfamiliar world that has different views and understanding concerning an event or an object. We discover that the ordinary and the familiar can be interpreted differently through different people's perceptions. ● "I fell into a high Road, for so I took it to be, though it served to the Inhabitants only a foot Path through a Field Barley. Here I walked on for some time, but could see little on either Side, it being now near harvest and the Corn rising at least forty Foot. I was an Hour walking to the end of this Field, which was fenced in with a Hedge of at least one hundred and twenty Foot high, and the Trees so lofty that I could make no Computation of their Altitude. There was a Stile to pass from this Field into the next. It had four Steps, and a Stone to cross over when you came to the uppermost. It was impossible for me to clime this Stile, because every Step was six Foot high and upper Stone above twenty." (From Gulliver's Travel) ● We come to the realisation that a familiar object may have a hidden characteristic inside. Through this voyage through different visual representations; I wish to find a masterpiece in daily life and come up with a different idea of them, not from the place where I stand now, but from my new perspectives discovered on my fantastical journey. ■ LEEJUEUN
