Love Me Tender

두산갤러리 뉴욕에서는 이동욱의 개인전 『Love Me Tender』展을 개최한다. 이번 전시에는 기존 작품들 중에서 특별히 선정된 인물 조각 5점과 신작 설치작품 3점을 선보일 예정이다.

이동욱은 아주 작은 크기의 섬세하고 사실적인 인체 조형물을 만든다. 작가는 이 조각들과 일상생활 속에서 볼 수 있는 오브제들을 극단적이고 기묘하게 조합하는 방식으로 작업을 한다. 예를 들면 생선 통조림 속에 인체가 담겨져 있거나, 낚시줄에는 전라의 남녀가 묶여져 있고, 낚시바늘에는 인체가 끼워져 있다. 그의 최근 작품들 또한 연약한 인간의 본질을 내포한다는 점에서는 기존의 작품들과 같은 선상에 있지만 이번에는 한발 더 나아가 눈에 보여지는 형식을 무너뜨리고 이 감성을 추상화하여 인간의 연약함을 표현하고 있다. ● 이동욱의 작품속에 등장하는 모든 인간은 존재일반(being-in-general)으로 연약하고 불완전한 모든 인간을 대변한다. 이동욱이 표현하는 고통 받는 인간들은 그들의 본래성을 가리고 있는 은폐와 어둠을 제거하고 본래적인 자신이 나오지 못하도록 막고 있는 장애물들을 부서 버려야 행복해 질 것 같다. 하지만 이들이 그 그늘 속에서 완전히 벗어나는 것을 의미하는 것은 아니며 그럴 수도 없다. 그러므로 이 연약함은 관객들로 하여금 연민의 감정을 극대화시켜 우리 자신의 모습과 인간의 본질을 되돌아보게 한다. ■ 두산갤러리 뉴욕

DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to announce the first New York solo exhibition of Korea-based sculptor Dongwook Lee's Love Me Tender. The exhibition features five of his remarkable sculptures and three latest works which reflect his ongoing investigation of delicateness and tenderness of being-in-general. ● Lee creates tiny human figures that mainly concentrate on human bodies and facial expressions that stimulate extremely delicate effect. He places the figures under intensely painful situations in their most awkward and extreme moments such as inside a can like anchovies and hanging on a hook as fishing hook. In his newest works, Lee attempts to go a step further by deconstructing and deforming the visual elements in the same sense of the tenderness. ● Lee's sculptural work concentrates on being-in-general whose misery has been assigned, tenderly portraying people in their most intimate, isolated, and vulnerable moments. The expression of his figurative objects is subtly exaggerated to raise the viewer's emotional resonance, so they might remind their own sufferings through Lee's grotesque figures. As a result, the level of desperation to a climax and its strange cruelty compel us to look closely on our daily life and essence of human being. The tenderness of Lee's works evokes a range of human situations such as defenselessness and helplessness, and pitiful and compassionate responses. ■ DOOSAN Gallery New York
