마음

마음은 보석처럼 빛난다 ● 삼각형, 사각형, 원형, 그리고 하트의 형태들. 김정아의 대형 캔버스를 가득 채운 주인공들은 흔히 보석이라고 일컬어지는 사물들이다. 손톱보다 작은 크기로 황금보다 더 큰 가치를 갖는, 아름답고 견고하고 희귀한 돌, 보석(寶石). 그리고 작가는 이러한 보석을 '마음'이라 부른다. ● 김정아의 2008년 구두 연작들에서 구두 뒤꿈치 혹은 뒷굽 일부에 보조적으로 나타났던 보석들은, 2010년 『아다마스 Adamas』展에서는 작품의 주인공으로, 다이아몬드로 등장했다. 무색의 투명한 다이아몬드는 어두운 검정 배경 속에서 떠오르면서 화면의 절반 정도를 차지했고 그림 상단에 위치했다. 그 아래에는 그림자(혹은 반영)가 함께 했다. 이어 2011년 작품들 「The Precious Stone of Mind」에서는 분홍, 노랑, 파랑 등 유색(有色) 다이아몬드와 루비 등이 등장하고, 보석의 크기는 더욱 확대되어 화면을 가득 차지한다. 흰색, 회색, 녹색의 배경 속에서 보석은 좀 더 아래로 내려와 그림 중심 가까이 이동한다. 나아가, 이전 작품들에서 다이아몬드들이 측면, 정면, 혹은 올려서나 내려다 보이는 여러 각도를 취했다면, 이번 전시의 보석들 대다수는 정면으로 관람자들을 마주한다.

전시 제목인 『마음』은 작가가 자신의 의지를 찾아가는 그리고 그녀의 생각들을 하나로 모으는 단어이다. 첫 전시에서 도도하게 우뚝 서있던 구두와 보석장식물들이 당시 고민과 불안감 속에서 세우고자 했던 본인의 자존감이었다면, 작가는 다이아몬드와 여러 보석들이 긴 시간과 단련을 통해 가치를 발하는 그 형성 과정에 의미를 찾는다. 깊은 지층(地層) 속에서 오랜 시간을 보내고 나와 깎이고 다듬어져 마침내 빛을 발하는 보석들. 작가는 사람의 마음 또한 많은 시간과 경험을 통해서 의미 있는 존재가 될 수 있음을 작품들을 통해 이야기한다. ■ 김동현

Mind, It Shines as Bright as the Precious Stone ● The shapes of squares, triangles, circles, and hearts. The huge canvases show precious stones, which are smaller than thumbnails, though more valuable than gold. And, Kim, Jung-A, the artist, names these precious stones as 'ma-um (mind)'. ● Gems started to be present in her works since 2008. In the series of paintings of high-heeled shoes, they appeared partly on the heel or the support of shoes. Since the works of 2010, they have come alone as a main subject. In 『Adamas』(2010), a transparent and colorless diamond is emerging from the black background, as if it is viewed from above or under it. In 「The Precious Stone of Mind」(2011), various colors of dimonds and gems appear, and the backgrounds are white, grey, green, or blue. Diamonds are magnified bigger than ever, and even cover more than three quarters of the picture plane. Moreover, unlike the previous exhibitions, gems and dimonds are often facing straight to the viewer boldly. ● Since the first exhibition, her works have touched the notion of 『mind』. In 2008, the high-heeled shoes and their ornaments were the symbols of her will to go through her own dilemma and feeling of lost at that time. And, the gems and diamonds of 2010 and 2011 are not different. Having spent more than hundreds and thousands of years under the ground, the precious stones finally come out and become the valuable ones. That is what Kim, Jung-A wants mind to be through time and experience, and that is what she tries to talk with her works. ■ KIMDONGHYOUN
