Inside Out

작가노트_Inside Out ● 이번 전시는 두 가지 작업으로 이루어져 있다. 하나는 「당신이, 당신을 볼 수 있는 한 가지 방법」시리즈이고, 또 하나는 「Not for Nothing」시리즈이다.

「당신이, 당신을 볼 수 있는 한 가지 방법」은 포트레이트 작업이다. 여느 포트레이트 작업들이 촬영자가 인물을 탐구하는 과정인 것과 달리, 나의 작업은 피사체가 되는 인물이 자기 자신을 탐구하는 작업임을 먼저 말하고 싶다. 이 작업 속의 모델들은 모두 카메라가 아닌, 거울에 비친 자기 자신의 얼굴을 보고 있는 중이다. 자기 자신을 보고 있는 모델의 모습을 정면에서 온전히 촬영하기 위해 한쪽은 거울, 다른 한쪽은 유리인 하프미러를 이용해 촬영을 했다. 모델들이 받은 주문은 평소보다 조금만 더 진지하게 자신을 마주하라는 것이었고 모델들은 사방이 막힌 방 형태의 세트 안에서­ 자기 자신에 집중할 수 있었다. 촬영이 끝난 후엔 그들이 자신을 마주하는 동안에 들었던 생각이나 느낌을 자필로 받았다. 거울이란 것이 단순히 빛을 반사시켜 그 반영을 보여주는 물건은 아닌 것 같다. 그저 거울을 보는 것과, 거울을 통해 자기 자신을 마주하는 것은 완전히 다른 이야기이다. 그것은 오히려 물에 비친 자신을 사랑하게 된 나르시스나 거울방패에 의해 죽임을 당한 메두사의 이야기에 가깝다. 이런 경우의 거울은 내면을 담아내는 그릇이 된다. 거울과 마주섰을 때, 거울을 보는 나와 거울 속의 나 사이에 공간이 생겨난다. 그리고 그 공간 속에 자신의 내면이 담긴다. 우리는 바로 우리의 모습을 볼 수 있는 것이다.

인물을 다룬 앞의 작업과 달리 「Not for Nothing」시리즈는 개인의 소중한 물건들을 소재로 쓰고 있다. 하지만 그 물건을 통해 보이는 것은 마찬가지로 우리 자신이다. 타인이 보기엔 보잘것없고 별것 아닌 물건들처럼 보이지만 그 물건의 주인에겐 너무나 특별한 가치를 가지는 경우가 있다. 물건에 담겨있는 기억이나 이야기, 혹은 의미가 그것들을 특별하게 만들어 준다. 그것은 바로 이 작업의 제목 그대로 모두 소중할 만한 이유가 있는 물건들인 것이다. ● 이러한 개인적인 보물을 마치 예술작품처럼 혹은 중요한 유물처럼 보이게 만들었다. 원래 물건의 가치란 것은 거리에 의해서도 생성된다. 아크릴 케이스와 사진매체란 결과에 의해 만들어지는 물건과 감상자의 거리는 그 물건에 담겨있는 스토리를 모름에도 좀 더 특별하고 가치 있는 것으로 느껴지게 한다. 사실 그런 외적인 의도가 아니더라도 우리의 추억과 기억은 어느 예술작품에 비해도 훨씬 더 큰 가치를 가진다. ● 이번 나의 전시는 '내 방'과도 같다. 햇살이 너무 좋은 어느 오후, 아무도 없는 집안에서­ 홀로 방안에 앉아 그 조용함에 온 몸이 푹 꺼진다. 그리곤 가만히 거울을 보기도 하고 보물 상자를 꺼내어 오래된 추억을 더듬기도 한다. 그런 내 자신에 대한 사소하지만 큰 애정이 이 작업들의 시작이었다. 전시 제목 『Inside Out』 은 겉을 통해 안을 본다는 의미로 지었다. 그것이 나의 얼굴이든 개인적 보물이든, 사실은 나의 내면이 뒤집혀 있는 상태였던 것이다. 모두들 이 공간에 전시되어 있는 자신이란 작품을 감상하고 가길 기대해본다. ■ 전민혁

Artist's Statement_Inside Out ● This exhibition has two stories: one is 「One Way That You Can Look Into Yourself」and the other is 「Not for Nothing」. ● 「One Way That You Can Look Into Yourself」is a project about portraits and I would like to point out that my works are about 'the figures' observing themselves, unlike other ordinary portraits of the photographer observing the figures. The models in the portraits are not looking at the camera but at their reflection. In order to take photos of the models looking into themselves without any distractions, I built a closed in room and installed a 2 way mirror. Before the subjects entered the mirror room, I only and simply asked the models to look into and at themselves in the mirror just a little more seriously than usual. Models could concentrate more easily on themselves with the isolated space. Right after taking the photo, they wrote about what they felt while they watched themselves. A mirror seems more than just an object that simply shows images by reflecting light, and 'seeing the image of oneself in the mirror' and 'looking at the inner self through the mirror' is completely different. It is like the tale of Narcissi who fell in love with his own reflection or the story of Medusa who killed herself by a mirror shield. A mirror can represent one's inner self. When one faces it, a space is created between the person himself and the reflection in the mirror, and in the space, the inner self of the person is portrayed. This is when it is possible to look into ourselves. ● Unlike the former series with figures, 「Not for Nothing」 is about someone's private object. It is just an object, but what we see through the object is ourselves. Although the objects may seem useless and insignificant to others, they may be very precious to the person who owns them. Their historical stories, memories or meanings make them special. There are reasons each object is special and as the title implies it is 「not for nothing」. I made these private and precious objects look like art works or heritages because the value of the object may sometimes be created by "distance". Creating a "distance" by using acryl cases and photographs, make the viewers think that the object is special and valuable even though they don't know its background or history. Even without such intention, it is true that our memories are much more valuable than any art work. ● For me, this exhibition is like 'my room'. One afternoon with beautiful sunshine, I felt comfortable sitting in the room alone with silence. I looked into the mirror and opened my treasure box to trace my old memories. It was some kind of trivial but deep affection for myself and it was the start of these two series. The exhibition title 『Inside Out』means looking inside through the outside because everything – either my face or private treasure – was something turned over from my inner side, revealing myself. I hope the viewers will be able to meet and see themselves from my works. ■ JEONMINHYUK
