청색시대 Blue period

신한갤러리의 2012년 전시는 중국 작가 허진웨이(何晋渭, 1967년생)의 『청색시대』展으로 문을 연다. 『Shinhan Global Artist Festa』의 일환으로 진행되는 본 전시는, 그 동안 『Shinhan Young Artist Festa』를 통해 신진 작가들을 꾸준히 지원해 온 신한갤러리의 새로운 프로젝트이다. 본 프로젝트는 역량 있는 해외 작가를 소개하는 한 편 해외에서 활동하는 한국 작가의 전시를 개최하여 예술을 통한 문화 교류와 소통의 장을 마련하기 위함이다.

최근의 중국 미술은 탄탄한 실력과 폭넓은 사고를 갖춘 다양한 작가들을 바탕으로 큰 발전을 이루었다. 예술의 민주화는 작가들에게 새로운 창작의 길을 제공해주었으며 미술시장에서도 큰 호황을 누리는 계기가 되었다. 하지만 그 이면에는 사회주의와 자본주의 등 이데올로기로 인한 혼돈의 시대를 살아가고 있는 작가들의 고민과 비판이 담겨있다. 허진웨이 역시 중국이 처한 사회 현실을 다루고 있다. 어두운 푸른빛이 감도는 그의 작품은 불안하면서도 우울한 분위기가 지배적이다. 인물에 드리워진 짙은 그림자가 이를 더욱 고조시킨다. 작품의 모델은 거의 빈민 노동자들이거나 아이들로, 고도의 경제 성장을 이룬 산업화의 과정에서 소외된 사람들이다. 빈민가 아이들의 모습은 기억 속에 어렴풋하게 남아 있는 작가 자신의 유년시절에 대한 회상일 수도 있다. 이러한 문제의식은 분할 된 인물군상이 하나의 화면 안에 배치된 집단초상화 작업에서도 나타난다.이외에도 인물이 배제된 풍경 그림은 안개가 자욱하게 깔린 것처럼 뿌옇게 처리되어 있다. 중국의 현재를 바라보고 있는 작가의 심정이 어떠한지 추측해 볼 수 있는 작품들이다. 하지만 이처럼 불투명한 현실 속에서도 회화로 메시지를 전달하면서 인간성을 회복하고자 하는 작가의 의지는 어두운 시대를 살아가고 있는 사람들에게 따뜻한 기운을 전해 준다.

허진웨이는 『청색시대』展을 통해 베니스 비엔날레 참여작과 「학교」시리즈의 신작 등 한국에서 처음소개되는 작품들과 작가의 고향인 사천성 남부현의 소학교를 배경으로 한 영상 작업을 선보일 예정이다. 중국현대 미술을 감상할 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될 이번 전시는 신한은행 북경 지점과 현지 전문가들의 도움이 컸다. 앞으로도 신한갤러리는 신한은행 해외 지점과 연계하여 다채롭고 수준 높은 전시를 추진하는데 주력할 것이다. ■ 김남은

He Jinwei's serial work, The Blue Period opens the first exhibition of Shinhan Gallery in 2012. This exhibition which is one part of the Shinhan Global Artist Festa is a new project of Shinhan Gallery which has continued to support young artists. The purpose of this project is to arrange communications field and cultural exchange by introducing foreign artists and Korean artists in overseas. ● The recent Chinese art has been improved by various artists with great ability and expanded thought. Democratization in art field provided a new way for creation to Chinese artists and a chance to prosper in art market. On the other side of this, however, there are worry and criticism of the artists who is living in the time of confusion based on the ideological differences as socialism, capitalism, and so on. He Jinwei has focused on Chinese actual life as well. Dark blue hangs over his paintings and they're occupied by anxious and gloomy atmosphere. A deep shadow over a figure makes it heavier. The models for his paintings are mainly persons, like poor workers and children, marginalized in the process of industrialization. Images of children living in ghettos would be a recollection of his childhood remembered vaguely. This critical mind appears on a group-portrait arranged the decoupled people on a flatness as well. Above this, a landscape with no persons is dimly painted as a foggy day. These works would show us the present of China. But handing the painted messages, the artist's intention to recover humanity, even in the unclear reality like this, delivers a warm air to the people living in the dark period. ● The participated paintings in the 2009 Venice Biennale, new series called School days, and video work which is set in an elementary school in the south province of Sichuan, the artist's hometownwill be shown in Korea for the first time. This exhibition which is a good opportunity to appreciate Chinese contemporary art received help from the Beijing branch of Shinhan Bank and local experts.
