내가 있는 자리-가로수

극사실주의 회화를 넘어선 가로수의 형상 ● 작가 김경미는 자연의 이미지를 미적 감각과 감성의 눈으로 관찰하며 자신만의 독특한 조형으로 전환시키는 데 많은 관심을 가져왔다. 따라서 작업실 부근의 평범해 보일 수 있는 나무들과 하늘 등이 작가의 조형적 감각에 의해 독특함을 지닌 자연의 이미지로 새롭게 형상화되었다. ● 그가 줄곧 관심을 가져온, 우리 주변의 가로수 등 소박한 자연의 이미지에 대한 조형적인 접근은 자연을 소재로 한 여느 미적 표현과는 사뭇 다른 성향을 지녔다고 할 수 있다. 그것은 우리가 시지각적으로 보고 느껴왔던 것과는 다른 느낌인 것이다. 이는 우리들의 삶의 공간에서 친숙한 가로수와 하늘 등을 토대로 한 것이라는 점에서도 의의가 있다. 더 나아가 하이퍼적인 사실주의를 기본으로 하면서도 또 한편으로는 하이퍼리얼리즘을 넘어서는 형식으로 전개되는 새로운 나무와 새로운 하늘의 표현이라 할 수 있다.

이처럼 작가의 그림들은 마치 작품 사진 같은 느낌을 주지만 좀 더 진지하게 다가서면 오로지 붓에 의존해서 표현된 형상들이라는 것을 알 수 있다. 더 나아가 시각적인 일루전의 효과를 가능토록 한 약간의 돌출이 있는 아크릴 화면의 표피는 모두 작가의 순수한 테크네로 구성되어 관심을 끈다. 언뜻 보기에는 단순히 오돌토돌한 형태의 유리인 것처럼 보이지만, 이것은 그가 많은 시행착오를 거치면서 얻어낸 하나의 조형적인 표현 방법으로서, 독특함이 있어 시각적인 흥미를 유발시킨다. ● 그러기에 김경미의 일련의 작품들은 다른 일반적인 사실주의적 작업과는 달리 조형적 이미지에 독특함이 흐른다. 대부분의 자연주의적 구상회화는 판에 박힌 듯 천편일률적일 수 있는데, 작가의 작품은 이들과는 사뭇 다른 이미지와 양상으로 전개된다. 이것은 극사실주의 회화가 지니는 장점을 갖추면서도 이를 새롭게 변화시키는 데서 비롯되었다고 하겠다. 여느 하이퍼리얼리즘 화가들의 그림이 마치 사진 같다면, 그의 그림은 가로수나 하늘 등을 하이퍼적으로 묘사하였음에도 불구하고 그림과 같은 그림이 된다. 작가의 그림은 우리가 흔히 볼 수 있는 나무나 하늘이면서도 우리의 시선을 한 번 더 그림에 고정시키는 흥미로움이 있다. 그래서 느낌이 풍부한 조형 작품이라 생각된다. 가로수와 하늘이 주된 소재이지만, 무미건조하거나 단순히 사실성에 바탕을 둔 그림이 아니라 삶의 향수를 느낄 수 있는 작품으로 표현된 것이다. 사실적이지만 지극히 서정적이며 노스텔지어적으로 말이다.

이처럼 컴퓨터에 의존하거나 특별한 기구가 사용되지 않고 오로지 붓을 이용하여 표현되는 일련의 작품들에서의 자연의 모습은 실재하는 것 같지만 촉각적이면서도 시각적인 일루전까지 함축하고 있다. 그러기에 우리는 작가의 나무나 하늘 그림을 볼 때면 그림의 대상에 감탄하기보다는 우선 테크닉과 작가의 조형성에 감탄한다. 그의 작품에는 이처럼 시각적인 흥미를 유발 할 수 있는 미적 감흥이 있어 주목된다. ● 시각적인 흥미를 유발시킬 만큼 감각적인 작가의 가로수 그림에, 단순한 나무의 형상을 넘어선 또 다른 조형적 변환이 존재함은 의미심장하다. 이 변환은 은유나 상징성 등을 부여한 것과 유사하게 보이기도 하지만, 각박한 삶과 현대 문명 속에 드러나는 또 다른 자연의 이미지라 생각된다. 어쩌면 다양하고도 복잡다단한 현대인의 삶 속에서 진리 자체가 불투명한 시대에 살고 있는 우리들의 삶의 방향을 환기하고 돌아볼 수 있는 공간을 부여하고 있는 지도 모른다.

이처럼 작가는 화면 속의 장면에 대한 우리의 고정관념을 탈피하여, 우리가 인식할 수 있는 자연의 이미지를 방법적인 면에서 해체하며 새로운 이미지를 신선하게 보여주고 있다. 자연의 조형미를 담은 나무나 혹은 주변의 환경 및 모든 것들과 자신과의 관계를 새롭게 재설정하고, 보다 밀도 있는 자연의 세계에 접근하기 위해 현실로부터의 탈 실재화를 추구하고 있는 것이다. 나무라는 친근한 소재를 통해 우리가 지금까지 보지도 경험하지도 못한 새로운 미적 세계를 말이다. ● 그러기에 작가는 초기 작업부터 주변의 가로수나 나무들을 철저하게 분석하고 분해하는 과정을 통해 이를 초감성적으로 이미지화시켜 가며 현대를 사는 나무가 지니는 속성을 조형화시키고자 하였다. 내적으로 축적된 경계 너머에 있는 또 다른 나무의 모습과 속성을 형상적으로 구체화 시키는 데 관심을 가져온 것이다. 아마도 자연이나 나무가 지니는 조형적 본성을 표현하기 위해 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 고민하고 사색하며 거짓 없는 자연의 세계에 대해 보다 진지한 자세를 견지해왔을 것이다. 이처럼 그는 잠재된 나무의 본성을 시지각적으로 느끼며 구체적으로 표현하고 이미지화시키기 위해 많은 노력을 해왔다. 때로는 가로수를 그리며 이를 체현하기도 하고, 때로는 나무를 오히려 부정하는 작업을 하면서, 그 실체에 대한 이미지를 조형화시키고자 하였다. 가로수이면서도, 새로운 로고스를 담은 새로운 세계로 우리를 안내하는 작가의 예술적 감각은 오늘을 사는 우리들에게 또 다른 시각적 즐거움을 맛보게 한다. ■ 장준석

Figure of Roadside tree Passing over Hyperrealism Painting ● Artist Kim, Kyung Mi has been highly interested in observing natural images with her own aesthetic sense and emotional eyes and in converting them into unique figures. Therefore, ordinary trees around her studio and the sky have been freshly figured into unique natural images by the artist's figurative sense. ● Figurative approach to the plain nature such as street trees around us which she has been consistently interested in, is very different from other aesthetic expressions of nature. That feels different from what we have seen and felt with our sight and sense. It is significant in that those are based on familiar street trees and the sky. In other words, it is based on hyperrealism but goes over hyperrealism at the same time, expressing fresh trees and fresh sky. ● Like this, the artist's paintings feel like photo works, but we can see those are expressed only by brush strokes when we approach them more sincerely. Besides, somewhat projected acryl screen surface with visual illusion effect, takes interest since it is done by the artist's pure technique. Seems bumpy glass at first glance, but this is a figurative expression she got after many trials and errors, which is so unique and visually interesting. ● That is why Kim, Kyung Mi's works are different from other realism works, but unique in their figurative images. Most naturalism concrete paintings can be monotonous, but the artist's works have very different images and expressions from those. They are equipped with advantages of hyperrealism paintings and refreshed those at the same time. While other hyperrealism paintings are like photo works, her paintings described street trees and the sky with hyperrealism style but become painting-like paintings. The artist's paintings are ordinary trees and the sky, but so interesting to catch our sight one more time. That is why those figurative works feel rich in emotions. Although street trees and the sky are main subjects, these paintings are not based on simple realism but express nostalgia of life. They are real but absolutely lyric and nostalgic. ● In a series of works expressed not by computer or any other device but by brush strokes only, nature looks real but actually it is virtual, which means non existence. Besides, more sensitive, more tactile and more visible illusion is condensed here. That's why we admire her technique and figurative sense earlier than the object of paintings when we look at the artist's paintings about the sky and trees. Aesthetic inspiring in her works catch eyes like this. ● It is significant that the trees in the artist's visually interesting paintings go over simple image of tree and convert into another figure. Such conversion look similar with metaphor or symbolism, but it is also considered as another image of nature revealed in hard-hearted life and modern civilization. It may offer the space making us look back upon the direction of our modern lives of variety, complexity and vague truth. ● Like this, the artist escapes from our stereotype about nature in the canvas, and shows us fresh images by disassembling perceivable ones in many ways. In other words, she pursues virtual space to approach the world of dense nature, after freshly re-setting the relation between herself and everything around her such as trees and environment with natural image. With familiar object tree, she shows us a new world of aesthetics we have never seen or experienced. ● For that, the artist tried to make hyper-sensitive images from trees in modern world, through the process of thorough analysis and disassembly of street trees and trees around us from the beginning. She has been interested in making concrete images and characters of trees which exist beyond the internally-accumulated border. The artist may stick to very sincere attitude toward the truthful nature, agonizing about and contemplating nature and trees for a long time to express their figurative nature. Like this, she has been putting much effort to express and make concrete images of potential nature of trees, perceiving and visually feeling it. Sometimes the artist painted street trees in the process of those work, but sometimes she denied them to make images of real trees. The artist's artistic sense leads us to the new world of street trees with new logo, and offers another visual pleasure to us in modern times. ■ Jang Junseok
