출발점과 기획 의도 ● 본 프로젝트는 한국 최대의 아시아 이주민 밀집 지역이자, 노동 이주와 결혼 이주와 같은 '이주'의 경험이 집약적으로 드러나는 안산 원곡동이라는 장소적 모델에서 출발한다. 리트머스는 2008년도 개관이래로 원곡동이라는 특수한 장소와 지역적 맥락이 어떠한 방식으로 문화예술적 실천과 연계될 수 있는 가에 대한 고민과 모색을 기반으로 다양한 형태의 프로젝트와 프로그램들을 운영해 왔고, 본 프로젝트 또한 이러한 리트머스 활동의 연장선상에 있다. 일반적으로 예술적 실천에서 지역과의 관계 맺기를 어떠한 방식으로든 의도하는 프로젝트들은 작가들이 대상 지역에서 그 지역의 커뮤니티와의 직접적인 소통을 기반으로 작업을 실현하는 방식을 통한 '현장성'을 강조하는 정형화된 이미지를 갖고 있다. 본 프로젝트는 현장에서의 직접적인 작업 방식으로부터 일정 부분 거리를 두고, 지역의 특수성을 반영하는 '이주'라는 하나의 통합적 주제를 통해 상술한 '현장성 (site)'의 의미와 예술적 실천이 지역과 관계 맺는 방식을 확장시켜보고자 기획되었다.

국제적/초국가적 네트워크 ● 국제적/초국가적 네트워크는 본 프로젝트에서 두 가지 측면에서 의미를 갖는다. 인간의 '이동'과 '이주'는 다양한 지리적 스펙트럼에서 발생하지만, '이주'라는 주제는 보편적으로 국경을 넘는 국제적 이주를 경험한 개별 주체들의 국제적/초국가적 네트워크를 반영한다. 또한 본 프로젝트는 해외 작가들을 초청하여 거주와 창작을 지원하는 레지던시 프로그램을 통한 국제 교류나 국가와 국가, 기관과 기관 간의 국제 교류 방식을 넘어 기획자나 리트머스와 연관을 맺었던 국내외 작가들과 그들의 작업들을 하나의 특정주제 하에 상호 연결시킴으로써 사적이고 미시적인 차원에서 작동 가능한 국제적/초국가적 네트워크와 교류를 실험하고자 한다.

주제와 작업들 ● 본 프로젝트에서 '이주'의 개념은 광의적 의미에서 인간의 '이동'과 '이동성', '이주' 그리고 이와 관련된 사회, 문화, 정치, 경제적인 제반 현상들을 포괄한다. 본 프로젝트는 세계의 다양한 지역, 도시와 문화를 배경으로 진행되고 있는 '이주'와 이와 연관된 사회문화적 현상들 그리고 보다 보편적인 삶의 양상의 변화와 미래적 비전을 다양한 관점과 예술적 방법으로 접근하고, 다양한 주체들의 이주에 대한 시선과 목소리, 사적 경험을 복합적이고 중층적으로 드러나게 하고자 한다. ● 참여 작가들의 작업들은 '이주'와 '이주적 상황' 그 자체에 대한 사회학적이고, 분석적인 접근이라기보다는 이주를 경험한 개인들, '이주자'에 더 집중되어 있다. 권자연 (Jayeon Kwon)은 작가 자신이 이주를 경험한 주체로서 자신의 사적인 경험과 기억을 역사적 맥락과의 교차 지점에서 다루고, 대부분의 작가들은 이주자들 그리고 그들의 경험과 기억, 상황들을 작업의 소재로 접근한다. 예를 들어, 알리시아 구를용 (Alicia Grullon)은 이주 대상 국가의 주류사회와 주변화되고 소외된 이주민과의 소통과 조우의 문제를 다루고, 도로타 포들라스카 (Dorota Podlaska), 박도빈 (Dobin Park), 줄리아 사리세티아티 (Julia Sarisetiati)는 이주민에 대한 관심과 공감을 기반으로 이주자 개인의 내러티브를 다양한 매체와 방식으로 전달한다. 리자 메이 데이비드 (Lizza May David)는 필리핀 여성 이주 노동자에 대한 다큐멘터리 작업에서 이주자 개인의 사적인 경험을 통해 신자유주의와 글로벌 자본주의의 영향 하에 초국가적 차원에서 진행되고 있는 새로운 계층과 노동의 분화 및 '이주의 여성화'의 문제를 간접적으로 드러낸다. ● 다프네 르 세르장 (Daphné Le Sergent)과 얀 레미츠 (Jan Lemitz)는 이주 현상이 첨예하게 가시화되는, 스페인의 남부 지중해 연안의 항구 도시 알메리아 (Almeria) 인근 지역과 프랑스의 칼레 (Calais)와 같은 경계지역으로 관객의 시선을 이끌며, '이주적 상황'을 은유적으로 표현하거나 경계와 통제, 이주의 문제 그리고 이들이 시각적 매체를 통해 재현되는 방식을 연구한다. 그 외에 리카 타우리아이넨 (Riikka Tauriainen)은 경계와 국경의 개념과 문제를 추상적인 차원에서 다루고, 타파리 아트 워크 (Tapari art work)는 네팔의 카트만두와 한국의 원곡동을 연결하며 일상적 사물을 통해 '이주'에 접근한다. 마지막으로 이주영의 작업은 전체 프로젝트에서 독자적이면서 독특한 위치를 점유한다. 작가는 다양한 이주의 배경을 가진 참여자들과 함께 DMZ 근방, 철원에 위치한, 현재는 남한에 속해 있는 북한의 옛 노동당사 건물로 탐험을 떠난다. 이 특수한 장소의 시공간적 문맥과 개인들 간의 우발적인 조우는 "즉흥성"과 "복잡성", 불안정하고 전이적인 상태를 포섭하며, 이를 통해 작업은 보편적인 '이주적 상황'의 알레고리로 기능한다. ■ 곽소연

Starting point and purpose ● This project was initiated from a spatial model of Wongok-dong in Ansan city, the most densely populated area with Asian immigrants in Korea where the experiences of 'migration' such as migration of labor and international marriage are revealing intensively. Since the establishment in 2008, Litmus has been conducting various forms of projects and programs based on the consideration of and search for how a specific place of Wongok-dong and its local context are able to be connected with cultural and artistic practices, and this project also is an extension of these activities of Litmus. In general, the projects which intend to establish a relationship with the local through artistic practices in any way show stereotype which emphasizes 'site' through the method that the artists realize the works based on direct communication with the local community in the target local. This project distances itself from any direct method of working on the spot in some degree and intends to extend the meaning of above-stated 'site' and the method of establishing a relationship between artistic practice and the local through an integrative theme of 'migration'.

International/Transnational network ● International/Transnational network has the meaning in two ways for this project. Human movement and migration occur in various geographical spectrums, however the theme of 'migration' generally reflects international/transnational network of individual subjects who experienced international migration to cross the border. Also, this project attempts to experiment international/transnational network and exchange which are able to be operated at private and microscopic level through interconnecting with Korean and foreign artists who were associated with curator and Litmus and their works under a specific theme beyond the methods of international exchanges that are performed by the residency program which invites artists from abroad and support their stay and work or by collaboration in the national and institutional level.

Theme and works ● In this project, the concept of 'migration' includes human movement, mobility and migration in a broad sense and other social, cultural, political and economic phenomena related to migration. This project intends to approach to 'migration' which is in progress in backgrounds of various regions, cities and cultures in the world, the various social and cultural phenomena, changes of more universal aspect of life and futuristic vision through diverse perspectives and artistic methods, and aims to present the perspectives, voices and individual experiences of various subjects in regard to migration in a complex and multi-layered way. ● The works of the participating artists concentrate more on individuals who experienced migration, so called 'migrants' rather than approach to 'migration' and 'migrational situation' itself in a sociological and analytical way. Jayeon Kwon deals with her private experiences and memories at the intersection of historical context as a subject who experienced migration and most of the artists approach to migrants and their experiences, memories and situations as subject matter of works. For instance, Alicia Grullon deals with the problematic of communication and encounter between marginalized migrants and the mainstream society in the country where they have migrated. Dorota Podlaska, Dobin Park and Julia Sarisetiati convey the narratives of individual migrants based on interest and empathy for migrants through different media and methods. Lizza May David's video documentaries about Filipino women migrant workers are concerned with the issues of new division of class and labor and 'feminization of migration' which are progressing at the translational level under the influence of neo-liberalism and global capitalism through the individual experiences of the migrants. ● Daphné Le Sergent and Jan Lemitz attract the audience's attention to the border zone such as the area near Spain's southern Mediterranean port city of Almeria and Calais, a city of France where the phenomenon of migration appears acutely and express 'migrational situation' metaphorically or investigate the issues of border, control, and migration and the way of representation of them through visual media. In addition, Riikka Tauriainen deals with the issue of border and boundary at an abstract level, and Tapari art work approaches to 'migration't through ordinary objects by connecting Katmandu in Nepal and Wongok-dong in Korea. Finally, the work of Jooyoung Lee holds an independent and unique position in the whole project. She went on an expedition to the North Korean Labor Party Building which is located in South Korea now, at near DMZ in Cheorwon city with participants who have various backgrounds of migration. This adventitious encounter between the temporal and spatial context of this specific place and individuals embraces the "spontaneity", "complexity", and unstable and transitional state and it makes this work function as an allegory of the universal 'migrational situation'. ■ Soyean GOAK
