The process of recognizing the world ● Park Neung-saeng is seeking to reveal the perception of the artist and the process of understanding the world through his work. The artist has mentioned that, "My mind forms the contemporary landscape, landscape that passed by, and the space with the eyes and body, and reveals every moment and state spent with the actual subject.(Park Neung-saeng, "October 2009 At Geumcheon studio", Park, Neung-saeng, Flying, Oct. 21, 2009 - Oct. 27)" The subjects he expresses are the city and the nature's landscape which are the grounds where we live and the appearance of human's extensive life.

The artist has produced works of diorama as large as 20-30meters of Seoul and Daejeon's city sights. He has climbed to the peaks of major mountains dozens of times and drew sketches in his drawing pad which he reorganized to produce a landscape that shows the whole city. Instead of the traditional paint brush, he used a tree branch dipped in ink to express the rough vegetation which was to show details rather than showing stereoscopic vision, and reveals a mixture of views from each peak. These long harmonized works project the artist's view of the world from the large amount of time the artist spent experiencing and communicating with nature, and putting efforts to recognize the world. The artist wrote, 'Drawing a mountain is revealing the original form of nature that is felt through your own body which starts from the personal experiences and finding my own spirit,(Park Neung-saeng, Ibid.)' and like this, the red background landscape of the series Bungee Jump and Flying seems to imply the eternity of nature or the sacredness of religion. While the bungee jumping or mountain climbing with this background creates a contrast with eternity, it breathes in liveliness into the image and sheds light on the human's rustic appearance of wanting to perceive the world in harmony with nature.

The artist participated in the Seoul Art Space GEUMCHEON residency program(2009-2011), and produced works with the theme of developing the city of Geumcheon. Increased interest in these areas can be seen through the participation of these programs. So far he has been looking at the subjects from a contemplative perspective, now he is listening to the people living in the area and expressing the grounds in which they live. The unstable topographic map of layers of shopping centers on top of one another is shown, and revealing the existence of endangered buildings threatened to be dismantled with the use of cloudy watercolor and spillage. These works reveal the sadness of watching the city people unable to settle in. Like the experience of heavy snow that covered the heartlessness felt in the redevelopment of poor hillside village of Bongcheon-dong in 1995 as it created a beautiful landscape, the works of Park Nung-saeng, who felt the greatness of nature that can snugly embrace even a modernized artificial city has a stream of warm humanism flowing in his work. His works are positive, simple, and immaculate. Park Neung-saeng is approaching the world a step closer by giving greatness and achievement into art through his experience.

The artist has great attachment to ink. He has the mission of being possibly the last artist in his generation to vitalize the feel of ink. He formally expropriates the traditional technique and sometimes reads the subjects through their prudent private life, and at times produces contemporary sense with abundant expressions. All sorts of disparate points of landscape are fused together through his perception to express contemporary greatness. From the artist's attitude of earnestness, sincerity, and positive outlook of life and toward his works, I can cautiously note the prospective direction of his future work. ■ Park Su-jin
