보통 Normal

보통이라는 말이 사회적 기준이 아닌 존재의 기준이 될 수 있을까. 나의 관심은 인간의 존재에 대해 의심하는 것이다. 많은 철학자들은 존재 자체의 의미에 대해 끊임없이 사유하고 정의하고자 했다. 이처럼 '왜'라는 질문에 대한 해답이 있다면 세상에 대한 단 하나의 진리가 탄생할 수 있을 테지만 우리가 과연 그것을 알 수 있을까. 그래서 우리는 '어떻게'라는 질문의 방식을 취한다. 어떻게 존재하는가에 대한 질문은 또한 인간과 그를 둘러싼 것들의 경계에서 파악하게 되는데 나는 그것들이 만들어내는 관계망들을 헤집고 다니는 것이다. 관계라는 것은 소통을 전제로 하는 비언어적 약속 같은 것이다. 또한 사회적 의미가 결여된 존재의 개인성을 의심하는 것은 의미와 무의미, 개인과 사회, 나와 너 사이의 경계를 배회하는 일이다. 철학자 빌렘플루서에 의하면 인간 커뮤니케이션은 '죽음에 이르게 하는 인생의 무의미함과 고독을 잊어버림으로써 인생을 살만하게 만들려는 의도'에서 발생한 것이라고 한다. 홀로 존재하되 혼자서는 존재할 수 없는 존재의 양면성은 소통하고자 하는 욕망과 완벽한 소통이 불가능한 지점을 대면하는 무력감으로 드러나기도 한다. 이러한 정답이 없는 의심은 관계를 새롭게 규정 짖기 위함이 아닌 규정지을 수 없는 것을 만나는 여행이다.

「보통 구조 I Normal structure I」,「보통 구조 II Normal structure II」에서도 기존의 작품과 같이 실을 옮겨 감는 행위를 포함한다. 그러한 행위는 어떠한 것도 변화시키지 않는다. 경화되지도 않고 실이 천을 꿰매 연결하지도 않으며, 천에 박혀서 자수가 되지도 않는다. 그것은 그대로 다른 곳으로 옮아갈 뿐이며 그러기 위해서 나는 그것을 내가 원하는 곳으로 옮기는 단순하고 반복된 행위만을 하게 된다. 이렇듯 목적이 없으며 나를 반복적으로 움직이게 하는 행위는 흘러가는 시간과 자신이 존재하는 세상과의 관계 속에서 온전히 개인만이 느낄 수 있는 무력감을 표현한다. 버려진 사물들에 실을 단순히 옮겨 감는 행위가 더해져 보통이 아닌, 보통도 아닌 것이 된다.

「그것이 문제로다 That is the question」셰익스피어의 비극 햄릿의 3막 4장에 나오는 유명한 대사로 To be or not to be, that is the question을 패러디한 것으로 원래 존재하느냐는 to be를 to communicate으로 치환한다. To communicate, or not to be, that is the question 은 네온으로 반짝이는 글씨가 되어 비스듬이 공중에 매달린다. 아는 사람들을 무작위로 떠올린다. 그 사람과 내가 어떤 관계인지, 얼굴, 사건, 감정 등이 다르게 일어나는 그들의 이름을 차례차례 써본다. 「아는 사람들 People who I know」은 결코 이름으로 대체될 수 없는 그들을 이름으로 치환하고 다시 겹쳐 씀으로써 이름들이 모여 말줄임표로 변화한다. ■ 송원진

I wonder if the word "normal" could be the criteria of existence rather than the social standard. To doubt human being's existence is what I have always been interested in. Many philosophers constantly tried to ponder and define the significant of existence itself. To continuous pondering of such matter parallels the basic question of "Why?" If the answer of the simple question "why" could be achieved, the Truth of existence would surface and in the face of truth, would it be possible to consciously realize the answer? For those reasons, rather than asking "why" we should ask "how". To ask a question as how human being exist could get the gist from the human and its borders which surrounded with human, then I go through related net of which borders made. Relationship is the non-verbal promise based on the communication. Also, to doubt on individual of existence with lack of social meaning is wandering of between sense and nonsense, individual and society, you and I. According to the Vilém Flusser, Czech-born philosopher, human communication is the purpose to make us forget the meaningless context in which we are completely alone and incommunicado, that is, the world in which we are condemned to solitary confinement and death. Being alone but couldn't be alone, double-sideness of the exist reveals lethargy which encounter point of contact to desire of communication and lack of possibility to communicate perfectly. This way, unanswerable question of doubt is a travel to encounter something impossible to regulate, not to newly define it. ● The motion that I wind thread on the objects doesn't make any change. The winded thread doesn't make the object hard, connect fabrics, and make an embroidery on the cloth. It is just movement to another object. So as to do that, I repeat to wind simply and mechanically. The meaningless motion I repeat constantly articulates lethargy, which each individual can only feel in time and connection to the world where I exist. To add to behavior of winding thread on the abandoned objects makes things not normal but not abnormal. ■ Song Wonjin
