뉴욕판타지 NEW YORK FANTASY

이상향이 존재하는 꿈의 무대, 뉴욕 ● 아메리칸 드림의 현주소를 공론적 시각보다 뉴욕에 대한 이상향과 휴머니즘에 주안점을 두고 바라 본 서계숙의 사진은 주관적인 관점을 강조한 시각적 힘이 돋보이는 것으로 언뜻 사진만 보아서는 여성작가의 작품이라 보기 어려울 정도로 과감하고 힘이 넘치는 프레이밍을 구사하고 있다. 그녀의 사진을 보노라면 결정적인 순간에 대한 해석을 달리하여 사진의 영역을 확장시켰던 프랭크(Robert Frank)나 클라인(William Klein)의 지적이며 때로는 금기시된 테크닉을 과감하게 구사하여 시행착오의 우연성 마져 창작의 본질로 받아드렸던 신선한 자극성을 지녔던 사진들을 연상케 한다. ● 시대를 앞선 충격적인 사진집 New York을 발간했던 클라인은 뉴욕을 아름다움과 온화함, 그리고 거친 야성과 알 수 없는 위협의 혼합체라고 말했다. 흑백으로 이루어진 그의 사진은 당시 가혹하고 격렬한 표현으로 많은 사회적 반향을 불러 일으켰었다. 반면 프랭크는 미국인이란 사진집에서 단조로운 현실생활을 개인적인 시각에 맞추어 객관적인 관점으로 편견 없는 시각을 표현하고자 하였다. 이러한 그들의 사진적인 시각은 이미 기성사진의 한 형식으로 젊은 사진들에게 많은 영향을 끼쳤다.

격변하던 아메리칸 드림 시대를 살았던 그들의 모노크롬 사진과 달리 뉴욕의 중심가 맨하튼 거리를 거닐며 스치는 수 많은 사람들의 경쾌한 모습에서 삶의 에너지를 충전 받는 것 같았다는 서계숙의 컬러 뉴욕은 밝고 경쾌하다. 강아지와 함께 하는 산책길에 꽃을 사는 뉴욕커 할아버지의 여유로움과 휠체어에 탄 할아버지가 미술관에서 작품을 감상하는 모습은 뉴욕의 온화함을 보여준다.

또한 현란한 네온사인으로 둘러 싸인 타임스퀘어 밤 거리는 자유로움과 더불어 여유로움이 묻어난다. 꿈을 향한 뉴욕커들의 진취적인 모습과 화려한 맨하튼 5번가의 패션거리를 중심으로 촬영한 뉴욕은 작가에게 이상의 지향점이 존재하는 꿈의 무대인 셈이다. 911 테러가 있었던 그라운드제로에 재건되고 있는 빌딩 앞을 지나는 사람들을 로우앵글로 구사한 사진에서는 작가의 뉴욕에 대한 동경을 엿 볼 수 있게 한다. 특히 뮤지컬 배우가 거리에서 홍보하는 장면이라든가 실루엣으로 표현된 뉴욕 양키즈 야구장에서 환호하는 모습은 사진의 시각적인 힘과 더불어 현장감이 잘 전해지는 것으로 작가의 적극적인 감성을 보여주고 있다. ● 아름다움과 더불어 꿈과 야망 그리고 알 수 없는 것들의 다양성이 공존하는 뉴욕에서 느끼는 감성은 저마다 보는 이의 시각에 따라 다르기 마련일 것이다. 휴머니즘을 바탕으로 하는 서계숙의 이상향에 대한 메시지는 뉴욕이라는 꿈의 무대에서 거침없이 펼쳐졌다고 본다. ■ 양재문

어린 시절부터 이름만 들어도 설레든 뉴욕! 그곳에 가면 모든 것이 화려해지고 당당해질 거 같은 로망이 있을 것 같았다. 나는 꿈에 그리던 그 뉴욕의 판타지를 거리에서 찾으려 했다. 도심풍경 속에 있는 사람들과의 우연한 만남은 스쳐가는 찰나의 순간에도 서로 공유하는 느낌으로 다가와 사진에 시간의 잔상으로 남겨지는 것 같다. 이러한 찰나의 형상들은 삶의 긴 여정 한가운데 절대적인 우연도, 절대적인 타인도 없음을 느끼게 한다. 현란하게 빛나는 대형광고판, 화려함을 뽐내는 쇼윈도, 고층 건물 유리창에 반영된 이미지들이 또 거리에 늘어선 강렬한 색상의 그림들이 어우러져 꿈과 이상을 부채질 한다. 도심풍경 속 사람들과 혼합되어 생성된 이미지들은 현실에서 꿈으로 그리고 다시 현실을 오가며 잠시나마 환상적인 우리의 삶을 상상하게 된다. 그러나 뉴욕이 내게 아름답고 환상적인 도시로 다가왔던 것은 딸과 함께였기 때문일 것이다. 어디에 있느냐 보다 누구와 있느냐가 더 중요할 테니까 말이다. 나의 도시는 아니지만 딸이 머물고 있는 도시이기에 더 친근하고 익숙하게 다가왔던 것 같다. 이제는 서울로 돌아와 그곳을 추억하지만 내게 사진이 있어 흔적이 남는다는 것이 즐겁다. 사진으로 다시 보는 뉴욕, 역시 가슴을 흔드는 매력이 있다. ■ 서계숙

New York: the dream stage of utopia ● Seo, Gye-sook considers ‘American Dream' with an emphasis on New York as utopia and humanism rather than the general opinion. She has a command of framing daringly and forcefully and focuses on her own subjective point of view over photographing. In result, her works have visual power. Her photographs reminds of Robert Frank's works which expanded on the realm of photography by suggesting the new interpretation on the ‘Decisive Moment' or William Klein's works that used both intelligent and forbidden techniques drastically to accept fortuitousness results from trial and error as the essence of his stimulating photographs. ● Klein who published a sensational photo collection, New York, said that New York is a mixture of beauty, wildness and unknown menace. He showed severe and heavy expression in his black and white photographs and it caused a great social sensation. On the other hand, Frank showed an objective view on monotonous modern life through his photo collection, The Americans. These photographic views already became one of the stereotypes of photographs and in fluenced the next generations. ● Unlike their monochrome photographs based on the period of American Dream, Seo's colored photographs of New York are relatively bright and lively. She said she received the vital force from lots of people on the Manhattan Street, the main street of New York. She represents the genial atmosphere of New York through the photographs of an old man who is buying flowers during his walk with a dog, and another old man in wheelchair who is watching a masterpiece in a museum. Besides, night streets in the Time Square surrounded by brilliant neon signs seem to show freedom and easiness. Her photos concentrate on Manhattan's Fifth Avenue fashion street and New Yorkers' aggressive actions toward dream, and it looks like a stage of dream. She exposes her yearning for New York through the passers-by in front of the reconstructing building that was destroyed in 911. She took a photo from a low angle in her photographs. The scenes in which a musical actor promotes on the street and people in silhouette cheer at New York Yankee Stadium show visual power of photographs and her enthusiastic attitude. ● In New York, many kinds of diversity coexist with beauty, dream and ambition. New York! The city that made my heart pounding just by hearing its name.I had a dream that everything would be fabulous and majestic if I were there. I tried to find my New York fantasy from the streets that I dreamed of. I tried to find my New York fantasy that I missed so much on the streets of New York A random meeting with the people in urban scenery reaches me with a common feeling shared with one another even for a brief moment. The images of these moments help me realize there are neither absolute coincidences nor absolute strangers in our course of life. Dazzlingly glowing billboards, the show windows that boast their splendor, images reflected on the windows of the skyscrapers, and the pictures of intense colors form a harmony. It is this harmony that fuels our dreams and ideals. The images created in a mixture with the people in urban sceneries make me go back and forth between the reality and the dream, and they help us imagine a fantastic life of ours even for a short time. However, the reason why New York stroke to me as a beautiful and fantastic city must have been that I was with my daughter. I think that who you are with is more important than where you are. Though New York is not my city, it felt more friendly and familiar because it is the city where my daughter is staying. Now I am back in Seoul revising my memories there.
