INTERPLAY

두산갤러리 뉴욕은 11월 17일부터 12얼 17일 까지 수잔송의 개인전 Interplay를 개최한다. 수잔송의 새로운 회화작품과 인스톨레이션 작품은 우리의 시각을 확장시키고 인식을 넓혀 줄 것이다. ● 수잔 송의 작품을 시각적으로 탐색하는 것은 재미있으면서도 혼동스럽다. 거친 화면의 질감 위에서 작가는 시각적으로 교묘하게 관객을 속이고 그들에게 그 대상의 재질에 대해 생각하게 한다. 일단 우리가 작품 안에서 무엇을 주시하면 그것은 변한다. 선을 따라가면 그 선은 면으로 바뀐다. 면을 따라가면 작품이 여러 공간으로 곂쳐 질 때 까지 그 면은 명암과 그 이상으로 변한다. 진실과 의심은 대등한 관계이다. 그리고 그녀의 작품은 이 비밀을 성공적으로 전달하고 있다. 이 작품들이 시각적으로 매우 효과적이기 때문에 관객은 지속적으로 자신이 이 평평한 화면 에서 무엇을 보고 있는지를 기억해야 한다.

작가는 공간에 대한 우리의 정해진 생각들을 배제시키고 세상과 우리의 내면과의 관계를 재고 하기 위해 일루전을 만든다. 이것은 우리의 현실과 부합하지는 않지만 우리 정신의 적용하고, 창조하고 추상할 수 있는 능력인 면에서는 일치한다. 그녀의 작품은 우리의 공간에 대한 선입관을 뒤로 하고 우리의 정신과 환경사이의 관련성을 변경한다. 그 작품들을 지각하며 몰두할수록 그 것들은 지적이다. 우리에게 독특한 시각적 경험을 하게 해 주는 이 작품들은 현실에 대한 시각적인 논리를 창조하고, 동시에 해체한다. ● 수잔송은 클렘슨 미대를 졸업하고 예일대 미대에서 석사를 마쳤다. 사비나 리 갤러리, 캐런 골든파인아트 와 마이클 스테인버그 파인아트에서 개인전과 이인전을 가졌고, 드로잉센터, 믹스드 그린 갤러리 그리고 서울 백해영 갤러리등에서 다수의 단체전에 참여 했다. 수잔송은 스맥 멜론 펠로우쉽과 예일대 조지 R. 버커 어워드, 그리고 나이파 회화부분 수상자였다. 수잔송은 현재 엘리자베스 파운데이션의 회화 부분 펠로우이다. ■ 두산갤러리 뉴욕

DOOSAN Gallery New York is delighted to present 'Interplay', a solo exhibition of work by Suzanne Song, from November 17 to December 17, 2011. Song will feature new paintings and an installation which invite us to develop our vision and expand our perception. ● It is both thrilling and confusing to visually navigate Song's paintings. Across a rough picture plane, Song reveals the visual sleight of hand, only to bring them back to the material reality of the object. Once we have a hold on something, it changes. Follow a line and the line turns into a plane. Follow a plane and it becomes a shadow and so forth, until the painting unfolds its multifaceted space. Truth and doubt have equal footing and the paintings are successful at delivering this conundrum. Since the paintings are so optically effective, one must constantly remind oneself that what is being looked at is indeed a flat surface. ● Song creates illusions to dispel our fixed notions of space and reconsider the relationship of the mind to the world. This does not correspond to our reality, but real in the sense of our mind's ability to adapt, create, and abstract. Her paintings challenge us to leave behind our preconceived notions of space and reconfigure the connection between the mind and the environment. As perceptually engaging as they are cerebral, these works simultaneously construct and deconstruct the visual logic to our reality that gives the viewer a unique optical experience. ● Suzanne Song received her MFA from Yale School of Art, Yale University in 2000 and a BFA from Clemson University in 1997. She has had numerous exhibitions throughout the United States including solo and two-person exhibitions at Sabina Lee Gallery, Caren Golden Fine Art and Michael Steinberg Fine Art and group exhibitions at The Drawing Center, Mixed Greens Gallery, and Paik Hae Young gallery in Seoul. Song's accolades include the Smack Mellon Studio Fellowship, the George R. Bunker Award at Yale, and a NYFA Fellow in Painting.
