리트머스 레지던시 프로그램은 원곡동의 다문화적 특수성과 여기서 파생된 다양한 사회문화적 현상을 작가적 시각으로 관찰, 재해석하고 그 내용을 창작활동으로 연결시키는 프로젝트 형 레지던시 프로그램으로 입주 작가 스스로 원곡동 일대를 창작 공간이자 플랫폼으로 삼아 새로운 환경과 문화를 찾아다니며 접촉하고 경험하는 이동에 중점을 둔다. '듀얼 게임 (Dual Game) – 협업을 통한 문화 번역에 대한 연구와 실험'展은 동일한 타이틀 하에 올해 진행되었던 『2011 리트머스 레지던시 프로그램』에 참여한 4명 작가들의 지난 3개월 입주기간 동안의 창작 활동과 그 결과물을 소개하는 결과보고 기획전시이다. 올해 레지던시 프로그램은 한국 작가와 원곡동을 거점으로 생활하는 다양한 국적과 직업을 가진 이주민 개인 간의 상호 소통과 협업 그리고 '문화 번역'의 개념에 포커스를 두었다. '문화 번역'이란 "한 언어를 다른 언어로 대치하는 일반적인 '번역'과는 다른 것으로, 타자의 언어, 행동 양식, 가치관 등에 내재화된 문화적 의미를 파악하여 '맥락'에 맞게 의미를 만들어내는 행위"라고 정의된다. (인용 출처: 김현미, 『글로벌 시대의 문화번역』, 2005, p. 48) 이런 의미에서 본 프로그램은 이주민을 능동적인 '문화 번역자'로 이해하고, 다양한 가치와 삶의 양식, 문화들이 혼재하는 원곡동이라는 구체적인 삶의 문맥 안에서 이주민들이 다양한 문화 간의 차이를 중재하고 번역하면서 지속적인 문화적 타협과 교섭의 과정을 구성한다는 점에 주목하였다. 입주 작가들은 - 이주민과 함께 그의 삶과 일상의 자취를 따라 여행할 수 있는 원곡동 투어 프로그램을 기획하고 진행하기, 이주민들이 귀환 후 이루고자 하는 꿈을 컨설팅 해 주는 가상적 에이전시를 운영하기, 이주민과 사진 교환을 매개로 소통의 과정을 실험하기, 이주민과 하루를 함께 보내며 하루의 가치를 사색하고 공유하기 - 등의 다양한 실험적 방식을 통해 파트너 이주민과 적극적인 소통과 협업을 진행하며, '문화 번역'의 과정이 투영된 이주민의 삶과 일상을 근거리에서 경험하고 공유하였다. 작가가 주도하는 예술 프로젝트의 프레임 안에서 이주민의 위치는 동등한 협업자라기 보다는 작가가 설정한 예술적 게임에 다양한 역할과 형태로 참여하는 참여자로서의 역할에 한정될 수밖에 없었고, 동시에 게임의 과정에서 발현된 이주민 개인의 삶과 일상을 기록하는 과정은 예술적 재현을 통해 이주민을 대상화시킬 수 있다는 문제를 고민하게 하였다. 이제 그 지난했던 소통과 협업의 과정을 뒤로하고, 작가들이 그 과정에서 경험하고 고민했던 내용들이 이번 전시를 통해 관객들과 함께 공유되고, 사색되기를 바란다. ■ 곽소연

Artist-in-residence program in Litmus is a project-type residency program which intends to observe and reinterpret the multi-cultural specificity of Wongok-dong and socio-cultural phenomena which are derived from this area on the artistic perspectives, and connect these contents to the creative activities. Also, this program regards Wongok-dong itself as a creative space and a platform for artistic activities and encourages artists to look for, contact and experience new environments and cultures through Wongok-dong by themselves. 'Dual Game – Research and Experiment on Cultural Translation through Collaboration' is the final report exhibition of 『Artist-in-residence program in Litmus 2011』 to introduce the process of activities and the outcomes of the four artists during the period of residency program for three months. Residency program of this year focuses on mutual communication, collaboration among Korean artists and individual immigrants who live in Wongok-dong as a stronghold and have varied nationalities and occupations, and the concept of 'cultural translation'. "'Cultural translation' is different from general meaning of 'translation' to replace one language by another language, but is defined as the act to understand inherent cultural meaning of language, behavior patterns and values of others and create meaning to fit the 'context'". (cited from: 『Cultural translation in the global era』 by Hyun-mi Kim, 2005, p. 48). In this sense, this program understands immigrants as active 'cultural translator' and notes that immigrants are organizing the continuous process of cultural compromise and negotiation while arbitrating and translating the differences between various cultures within the concrete context of life so called Wongok-dong where various values, ways of living and cultures are coexisting. By conducting active communication and collaboration with partnered immigrants through the various experimental methods such as planning and conducting Wongok-dong tour program with immigrant to travel along the traces of the immigrant's life and daily life, managing a virtual agency to consult dreams of immigrants to achieve after return to their homeland, experimenting the process of communication by the media of photo exchange, and sharing and mediating the value of a day through spending a day with immigrants, the artists in residency program experienced and shared the individual life and daily life of immigrants which the process of 'cultural translation' is reflected in at close range. The position of immigrants within the frame of artists-led art project was forced rather to play the limited role as participant to participate in the artistic games set up by the artists in various roles and forms than to act as equal collaborator, and we had to face the problem that maybe the process of documenting the individual life and daily life of immigrants can objectify immigrants by the artistic representation. For now, to put the extremely difficult process of communication and collaboration behind, I hope that the contents which the artists experienced and thought in the process will be shared and meditated with audiences through the exhibition. ■ Soyean GOAK

하루의 가치 ● 나는 타인과의 직접적인 소통을 통해 스스로의 존재감을 확인하고, 한편으로는 상대방에게도 존재감을 느끼도록 하기 위한 작업을 해 왔다. 이는 '너'와 '나'의 관계를 만들며 그 사이를 더듬어 보고 탐색하는 과정이기도 하다. 낯설고, 익숙하지 않은 것에 끌려 원곡동을 배회하면서도, 여전히 내가 가장 궁금했던 건 '사람들' 이었고, 길에서 낯선 사람들에게 대뜸 말을 걸기하고 이런 저런 과정을 통해 만나게 된 사람들로부터 소개를 받아 이곳에서 사는 사람들을 알아가게 되었다. 원곡동에서 만난 사람들, 특히 이주민들은 이곳에 여행을 온 것이 아니라 '일'을 하러 왔기 때문에 몇 년 간 한국에 정착하며 살아야 함에도 불구하고, 여가시간마저 과도한 업무로 인한 피로와 언어문제 등으로 온전히 자신들의 일상을 자유롭고 주체적으로 설계하고 생활하는 것이 쉽지 않은 듯 보였다. 누구나 갖고 있고, 갖고 있어야 한다고 생각하는 최소한의 일상에서의 자유를 이들과 함께 찾아보고 싶었다. 나의 프로젝트는 일을 하기 위해 사용하는 시간, 구체적으로 하루라는 시간 동안 노동을 제공한 대가로 받을 수 있는 평균적인 일당을 프로젝트에 참여한 이주민에게 선물하여 그들이 '원하는 하루'를 보내도록 돕고, 그 과정을 기록하는 것이다. 기록한 영상에는 우리가 함께 보낸 하루의 여정과 하루를 원활이 보내기 위해 서로 소통하는 과정이 담겨 있고, 또한 그들이 하루를 보내며 생각하고 느낀 점과 내가 그들의 의사표현을 통해 느끼게 된 점 등이 보여진다. 이 작업이 참여자뿐만 아니라, 관객들에게도 반복되는 일상 속에서 무심코 지나쳐버릴 수 있는 하루를 되짚어볼 수 있는 기회가 되었으면 한다. ■ 류희경

How much is a day worth? ● I have been working to confirm my own presence through direct communication with others and make others feel their own presence. It creates a relation between 'you' and 'I' and also is a process to search and explore in between. Even though I wandered around Wongok-dong driven by unfamiliar and strange things, what I interested in the most was 'people', so I talked to strangers in the street and people whom I met through various processes introduced me people who are living in here. And I gradually became acquainted with them. People whom I met in Wongok-dong, especially immigrants who came to Korea for working not for travelling seem have a difficulty to design and make their ordinary life freely and autonomously due to exhaustion from excessive work and problem of language and so forth, although they have to settle and live in here for several years. So I wanted to look for the minimum freedom in ordinary lives which is considered everyone has and everyone must have with them. My project is to supply an average daily wage to participated immigrants that they get paid for providing labor during a day, support them to spend 'A day what they want' and record the process. In the recorded video, there are the processes of the itinerary of us for the day and communication between us for spending the day smoothly, also it includes what they thought and felt during the day and what I felt from their expression of mind. I hope this project will be an opportunity for not only participants but also every audiences to look back our one day that we may walk away carelessly within our monotonously repetitive daily life. ■ Heekyung RYU

원셀프 투어 ● 'Oneself Tour' 프로젝트는 원곡동에 거주하고 있는 이주민 개인과 작가가 협업하여 원곡동을 대상지로 투어 프로그램을 기획하고 실행해 보는 프로젝트이다. 투어의 루트는 투어의 기획자이자 가이드인 이주민 개인의 사적인 삶/일상과 연관된 원곡동 내의 특정 장소들로 구성되고, 세부 프로그램 또한 이주민이 참여하고 있는 커뮤니티 활동이나 직업, 주변 사람들과의 관계에 따라 각각의 특성을 가진다. 참여자들이 가이드의 일방적인 설명을 들으며 소위 '국경 없는 마을'로 불리는 원곡동의 이국적인 경관을 피상적으로 둘러보는 정형화된 투어 프로그램에서 탈피하여, 원곡동에 투영된 이주민 개인의 삶과 일상의 자취를 따라 여행하면서 그의 삶과 소소한 일상, 기억, 고향에 대해 소통하고 공유할 수 있는 매우 사적이고 인터랙티브한 형식의 투어 프로그램이다. 일종의 여행사 형태인 'Oneself Tour'는 여러 개의 투어 프로그램을 제공하고 있는데, 모든 투어 프로그램은 불특정한 이주민 한 개인(One)이 스스로(Self) 투어 프로그램을 기획하고, 자기 자신(Oneself)의 이야기를 공유한다는 공통점을 가진다. 이는 원곡동에 살고 있는 이주민 개인을 자국/출신국 문화의 대변자로 고착화시키기 보다는 한 개인으로서 이주민이 원곡동이라는 구체적인 삶의 문맥 안에서 자국의 문화적 요소와 한국의 문화적 요소 그리고 기타 원곡동에 존재하는 다양한 문화적 요소들을 능동적으로 해석하고 적용하며 유동적인 새로운 정체성을 형성해 간다는 인식에서 출발한다. 문화접경 지대인 원곡동에서 새로운 정체성을 형성해 나아가는 이주민 한 개인의 삶의 여정과 일상의 면모를 투어 프로그램을 통해 공유하는 과정은 이주민 자신과 참여자/여행자에게 또 다른 자기 인식과 문화적 정체성의 전환의 계기로 작용할 것이다. ■ 박도빈

Oneself Tour ● 'Oneself Tour' is a project that an immigrant and an artist cooperate to plan and to perform a tour program in Wongok-dong. The route of each tour is composed of certain places related to the immigrant's daily life, every program has different characteristic depending on his/her job, community activity and personal relations. Departing from the standard pattern of general tour such as looking around Wongok-dong so called 'Boderless village' passively with unilateral explanation of a guide, this tour has a very private and interactive way to share the immigrant's personal life and memories through following his/her traces which are reflected in Wongok-dong. In fact, 'Oneself Tour' is a kind of travel agency offering several tour programs, all of these have the point in common that each program is made by an immigrant, i.e. 'oneself' and shares her/his own stories. This project doesn't regard an immigrant as a representative of culture of his/her homeland and is based on the idea that immigrants in Wongok-dong form their new identity flexibly through active interpreting and applying their own culture, Korean culture and various cultures of Wongok-dong in concrete context of life as individuals. On the process of the tour program to share the itinerary of life and aspects of ordinary life of an immigrant who is forming new self-identity in a cultural contact zone so called Wongok-dong, both of an immigrant him/herself and participants will have an opportunity to realize new self-awareness by themselves and to transform their cultural identity. ■ Dobin PARK

원곡동 사진 교환 릴레이 ● 리트머스 레지던시 프로그램에 참여하며 처음 원곡동을 방문했을 때만 해도 이주민과의 소통이 힘들 것이라고 생각했었다. 원곡동이라는 특수한 지형뿐만 아니라 서로 다른 언어와 문화적 배경을 가진 사람들(작가와 이주민)이 서로의 삶의 경험과 문화적 자원을 공유하고, 매끄럽게 소통하기가 어려운 것은 당연한 사실일지도 모르기 때문이다. 솔직하게 말하자면 나의 프로젝트는 기획단계에서부터 결과 지향적인 작업이 아니라 이주민들과 밀착하여 어떻게든 매끄럽게 그들의 생각과 내밀한 이야기를 들여다보고 싶다는 생각을 바탕에 두고 있었다. 그러기 위해서는 이주민 개개인이 적극적으로 참여하는 것뿐만 아니라 읽기와 해석을 바탕으로 하는 미디어 리터러시의 맥락에서 그들이 자신의 이야기를 들려주는 스토리텔러의 역할을 할 수 있고, 동시에 그들 스스로의 관점이 자연스럽게 드러날 수 있도록 하기 위한 작업 방식이 필요함을 깨달았다. 일전에 초등학생들과 다문화가정의 아이들을 대상으로 문화예술교육 프로그램을 진행한 적이 있었는데, 다문화가정의 아이들은 또래의 아이들과 자신의 경험과 이야기를 공유하거나 소통하는 데 있어서 언어적인 측면보다는 이미지적인 측면(그림이나 사진, 영상)으로 소통하는데 익숙하다는 것을 경험하였다. 이에 착안하여 이번 프로젝트를 위해 우선적으로 언어적으로 대화가 잘 통하지 않는 상황에서 작가와 이주민이 사진을 서신교환의 형태로 반복적으로 주고받는 시도를 하였다. 사진교환이 지속될수록 사진을 통한 대화가 거칠거나 혹은 매끄럽게 가능하리라 생각에서 시작하였는데, 결과적으로 사진을 통한 만남과 그 사진을 적극적으로 해석하는 방법과 과정에서 소통과 오해/오류를 확인하고 어디에서 번역과 오역이 일어나는지를 들여다보며 구체적으로 그 내용들을 기록하는 방향으로 작업의 방식을 수정하게 되었다. 비록 그 과정이 소박하고 조야하게 보일 수도 있겠지만, 오랜 기간 동안 서신교환의 횟수가 늘어나고 많은 이미지와 그에 대한 해석들이 프로파일링 된다면 프로젝트에 참여한 이주민의 삶과 관점, 문화적 자원들이 풍부하게 이 프로젝트 속에 스며들 것이라고 기대한다. 결과적으로 이 프로젝트는 사진 이미지의 해석에서 올 수 있는 소통과 오해/오역을 통한 만남을 주선하고 이주 노동자 개인의 내밀한 생각과 이야기를 들어보는 계기가 될 것이다. 이 프로젝트를 시작으로 한국사회에서 방문노동제공자로서의 삶을 살아가고 있는 이주민 개개인과의 지속적인 1:1 만남을 통해 이들의 다양한 삶의 경험과 이야기를 작업을 통해 끌어내 보고 싶다. 또한 이런 관계 설정이 문화 번역의 과정으로서 소통을 모색해 볼 수 있는 하나의 의미 있는 방법이 되리라 믿는다. ■ 박호상

Photo exchange relay in Wongok-dong ● When I visited Wongok-dong for the first time as an artist of Litmus Residency Program, I thought that communication with immigrants will be hard. I thought that it could be caused not only by the special topography of Wongok-dong, but also by the fact that to people (artist/immigrant) who have different languages and cultural background, it can be difficult to share their own experiences of lives and cultural resources and communicate with each other smoothly. To be honest, my project is not result-oriented but is based on my intention to hear thoughts and inner stories of immigrants smoothly by any means through contacting them from planning stage. To do that, I realized that the method of work is necessary which makes individual immigrants not only participate active, but also act as storyteller to tell their own stories in the context of media literacy, and at the same time which makes it possible their perspectives are revealed naturally. ● I conducted a culture and art education program for elementary school students and children from multicultural families previously, then I experienced that children from multicultural families are more accustomed to the imagery aspect (picture, photograph or video) than linguistic aspect to share and communicate their own experiences and stories with their peers. Based on this experience and regarding the difficulty of verbal communication, for this project I attempted to exchange the photographs repetitively in the form of correspondence between immigrant and artist. I thought that as the exchange of photographs continues more and more, the communication via photographs will go toughly or smoothly, however as a result, I could find out moments of communication and miscommunication/misunderstanding from the method and process of meeting through photographs and active interpretation of photographs. Therefore, I had to modify the method of work into scrutinizing the points where translation and mistranslation occur and recording the contents concretely. ● Although this project may seem naive and rough, however if the number of correspondence is increased and many images and analysis of them are profiled, I expect that lives and perspectives of immigrants and their cultural resources will be permeated into the project abundantly. As a result, this project will provide an opportunity to arrange the meetings which consist of communication and miscommunication by interpreting and mistranslating photographed images, and hear the inner thoughts and stories of individual immigrants. Starting with this project, I want to derive the various experiences and stories of their lives through one-to-one meeting with immigrants who are living as a visiting provider of labor in Korean society. Furthermore, I believe that this kind of establishment of relation will be a meaningful method to seek for communication as a process of cultural translation. ■ Hosang PARK

'드림 웨이 에이전시' 프로젝트는 안산시 원곡동에 거주하고 있는 이주민이 한국에서의 체류 이후 고국으로 귀환해서 이루고자 하는 꿈꾸고 있는 미래에 대하여 컨설팅 하면서, 현재의 상황에 대해 환기시키고 꿈에 도달할 수 있는 방법에 대한 가상적인 제안을 제시하고, 향후 실제적으로 꿈의 종착역에 다다를 수 있도록 지속적으로 지원할 수 있는 방법에 대하여 고민해 보는 파일럿 프로젝트이다. ■ 정재민

You have such dream. I see. The value of our agency is in utmost service and continuous AS for clients. I will rush forward to the client's dream like an excellent steed and a rhino's horn. Although the things will be a bit chaotic by taking a byway sometimes, please don't worry. As you will grow for your dream, I will do so, too." ● 'Dream Way Agency' is a pilot project to consult about the dreaming future of immigrants in Wongok-dong that they want to achieve after return to their homeland. By consulting, it also intends to arouse their current conditions, offer virtual suggestions and seek for a method of durational support to reach the actual destination of their dream in the future. ■ Jaemin JUNG
