PHOTOSPECTRUM의 첫번째 기획전시인 german photography now - Emotion, Drama, Narration in the stylistic variety 에서는 독일의 사진작가 3인 Nadja Verena Marcin, Philipp Schumacher, Jessica Zaydan이 사진이라는 매체를 통해 어떻게 이야기를 풀어나가는지에 관한 질문이다. ● 기획의 화두로서, 한가지는 독일에서의 새로운 사진적 접근을 조망해 보고자 함이고, 또 다른 한가지는 사진언어의 새로운 접근 방식에 관한 관점이라 할 수 있겠다. 소개하는 3인의 작가는 실재 존재하지 않았던 사건을 구성하여 사진적으로 재현해내는 작업들을 통해 사진의 기록성과 그것의 사실성에 관해 흥미로운 질문을 던지고 있다. 이번 전시를 통해 서로 다른 방식으로 사건을 재현해 내고 있는 3인의 작가들의 작업을 선보인다. 자신의 감성Emotion이 주체가 되어 이미지를 구축해 가는 나디아 마르신, 한 장의 사진으로 한편의 드라마Drama를 만드는 필립 슈마허 그리고 기존의 동화를 자신의 관점에서 새로이 이야기Narration하는 제시카 자이단의 작업을 소개한다.

퍼포먼스, 사진, 영상작업에 걸쳐 광범위하게 매체를 사용하고 있는 나디아 마르씬의 모든 작업은 그녀의 인생에 있어 특정 장소와 시간과 연계된 특별한 느낌의 표명이라고 말할 수 있다. 따라서 그녀 아닌 다른 누구도 재현하고 복제할 수 없는 그 감성을 그녀 자신의 퍼포먼스로 표현하고 사진으로 재구성된다.

드라마틱한 라이팅으로 자신만의 독특한 작업세계를 형성하고 있는 필립 슈마허는 자신 스스로를 카메라로 작업하는 에세이스트라고 표현할 정도로 그의 작업은 한편의 이야기를 연상시킨다. 무엇이 일어났고 앞으로 어떤 일이 벌어질 것인가에 관해 관객에게 열어놓은 그의 작업읽기는 작가와 관람객의 끝없는 소통으로 이어진다. 아이디어와 함께 떠오른 아이디어를 하나의 장면으로 만드는데 한 달이 넘게 걸리는 작업을 하며 한장의 사진을 위해 직접 시나리오를 만들고 감독하는 그의 작업에 나타나는 거의 모든 배경은 그의 고향이자 삶의 터전인 두이스부르크를 기반으로 한다. 서독의 찬란했던 경제성장의 중심이었던 루르공업지역의 산업건축물들은 그의 작업에서 드라마틱한 라이팅과 함께 다시 태어난다.

'[…] 빨간모자는 할머니를 찾아 산속으로 들어가 늑대를 만나서 잡아 먹힌다. […] 그리고 여성으로 다시 돌아온다.' (작가노트 중) 제시카 자이단은 현재까지도 끊임없이 새롭게 해석 되어지고 있는 동화 '빨강모자 Red Riding Hood'를 기반으로 자신만의 이야기를 풀어나간다. 원작의 결말을 살펴보면 할머니와 빨강모자는 사냥꾼에 의해 구출된다. 결국 사냥꾼이 늑대의 배를 가르고 늑대는 연못에 빠져 죽게 된다. 자이단의 '원작 비틀기'식의 시리즈는 기존의 동화에서 보여지는 여성성과 남성성에 관해 근본적으로 새롭게 해석하고 있다. 시리즈 전작을 보면 크로노그래피처럼 보여질 정도로 시간성을 전제로 이야기를 전개하며 빨간모자와 늑대의 관계 속에서 새로이 형성되는 여성성, 신뢰 그리고 용기에 관해 이야기하고 있다. ● 3인의 작업이 한 자리에서 보여지며 관찰자로 하여금 좀 더 다층적인 경험적 코드가 만들어지길 기대한다. 다양하고 흥미로운 접근방식을 통해서 생산되는 이미지의 고찰은 인간의 기억에 대한 탐구인 동시에 또 다른 이정표를 맞이한 사진 매체의 탐구가 될 것이다. ■ 김선정

German photography now - Emotion, Drama, Narration for stylistic variety (First Temporary Exhibition of PHOTOSPECTRUM) is about how three German photographers (Nadja Verena Marcin, Philipp Schumacher, Jessica Zaydan) tell stories through photographs. ● The purpose is to see a new photograph-oriented approach from Germany, and a perspective on this new approach of photographic language. The aforementioned three photographers raise the question on the recording characteristics of such photographs and their perception of reality through works which are reproduced with photograph-oriented methods, as creating events that were previously not nonexistent. In this exhibition, the three photographers display their works so that the events are reproduced in different ways. The works will be introduced by three photographers: Nadja Marcin who establishes images based on emotions; Philipp Schumacher creating drama through pictures; and Jessica Zaydan through the new narration of existing stories from her perspective. ● All the works by Nadja Marcin, which utilizes media in a broad fashion (Performance, Picture, Video), are the expression of a special feeling related to a specific location and times in her life. Thus, her emotions, which cannot be reproduced by others is sincerely expressed by her performances and thus expressed through her photographs. ● Philipp Schumacher whose distinct works on the basis of dramatic writing which designates him as an essayist who creates works through a camera. His works suggest pieces of a story. His works are open to spectators in terms of what has happened and what will happen in the future, leading to communication between the photographer and spectators in a continuous manner. He writes a scenario in person and monitors this through a picture, making all efforts for works which takes over one month to create a single scene based on ideas. Almost all of the backgrounds in his works are from Duisburg (his home). The industrial buildings in the manufacturing areas of Ruhr, which was the center of the economic development during West Germany's growth, are reproduced by through the dramatic writing in his works. ● '[…] Red Riding Hood went to the mountain in order to seek her grandmother, met a wolf, and was eaten by the wolf. […] And, when she came back, she became a woman.' (In her note) Jessica Zaydan tells her story based on 'Red Riding Hood' which has been newly interpreted in a continuous manner until now. At the end of the original story, Red Riding Hood and her grandmother are rescued by a hunter. Finally, the hunter cut the wolf open, and the wolf drowned. In a series of her works (a 'twisting of the original story'), femininity and masculinity in the existing stories are fundamentally interpreted in a new way. In previous works of her series, the story develops through epoch characteristics as premises just as a chronograph, and it tells of femininity, trust, and courage, of which is newly formed in a relationship between Red Riding Hood and the wolf. ● It is expected that there will be more various experiences for an observer of the works by the three photographers in the exhibition. Considerations in regards to the images created by various and interesting approaches will be not only an exploration for human memory, but an exploration of photographic media which reaches new milestones. ■ Sun-Jung Kim
