'sound of silence'고요의 소리 ● 화분이라는 인위적인 자연물을 정해진 틀 속에서 살아가는 현대인의 모습이라는 생각을 하게 되면서 나 자신 조차도 현실이라는 테두리에서 얼마나 자신을 조절하고 억누르고 살아가는지에 대한 스스로에게 보내는 질문들에 대해 생각한다. 사람마다 얼굴이 다르고 생각이다르고 방식이 다르다. 하지만 정말 일상이 되어버린 내 삶과 꿈들을 얼마나 느끼고 표현하고 행복해 하는지? 이따금씩 난 화분을 보고 많은 것을 느끼고 생각한다. 스크린속에 영화처럼... 아름다운 풍경도 있고 멋진 배우도 나오고 추억도 나온다. 어느새 그것들이 마치 파장처럼 내게 들리고 느껴진다. 풍경을 볼 때나 사물을 볼 때 그 자체에 아름다움을 느낀다 하지만 그로 인해 또 다른 것을 느낀다. 난 그 소리들에 귀 기울인다 고요의 소리들을... ■ 이문배

복잡한 현대의 일상은 좀처럼 사유의 시간을 허락하지 않는다. 예전의 우리는 돌아올 사람을 기다리며 동네 모퉁이를 서성대거나, 그리운 이에게 편지를 띄우고 답장을 기다리는 시간이 있었다. 그러한 삶의 막간들은 그리움에 깊이를 더하는 시간이자, 설레는 사유의 시간이었던 것이다. 이제는 영상통화가 가능한 이동통신에, 이메일, 문자 메세지, 블로그, 트위터까지... 실시간으로 보고 실시간으로 확인할 수 있는, 기다림이 소멸된 시대를 살고 있다. 기다림이 가져다주는 인내와 설렘이 제거된 지금, 우리는 편리함을 얻은 대신 그리움과 사유를 잃어버린 것은 아닐까? ● 이문배 작가의 "고요의 소리"라는 명제는 주변을 가득 메우고 있는 어지러운 기계음들과 쏜살처럼 변해가는 고속의 일상을 저만큼 비켜선 오래된 동네의 낡은 이발소를 연상시킨다. 현대생활의 변화속도에 맞춰 숨차게 달려가는 이들에게 느릿느릿 가위질을 하는 늙은 이발사의 고집이 느껴진다. 주변의 작은 모습들, 작은 소리들을 다양하게 담아내는 이문배 작가의 작품세계에는 우리가 잃어버린 기다림이 묻어난다. 우리가 시간에 쫓기느라 찍지 못했던 쉼표가 존재한다. 에칭, 아쿼틴트, 아크릴, 디지털 프린트, 실크 스크린 등... 다양한 시도를 통해 일상의 작은 모습들을 새로운 해석으로 재구성하는 작가만의 독특한 창작세계는 낯설어 보이지만, 아련히 생각에 빠지게 하는 그리움이 담겨 있다. 현대를 살아가는 우리는 무엇을 잃고 있는지 조차 생각할 겨를이 없이 하루하루를 보낼 때가 많다. 이문배 작가의 작품은 우리들에게 그리운 것을 그리워하고, 잃어버린 것을 생각하게 한다. 이처럼 우리가 잃어가던 감정을 끌어내어 다시 생각하게 하는 작용이야말로 진정한 미(美)적 체험이자 예술의 힘이 아닐까싶다. 일상의 작은 것들도 소중한 시선으로 관찰하고, 오랜 시간 사유로 숙성시켜 자신만의 창작세계를 만들어가는 작가의 여정에 박수를 보낸다. ■ 김영철

It is not easy to take the thinking due to the busy life recently. In the past, people usally had enough time to wait for somebody outside going around or for the reply after sending the letter to somebody we are missing. The more people recollect the past, the more they miss it and hope that time coming back. Now, mobile, email, text message, blogs, twitter and real-time messenger are in use to communicate with other people, and the aesthetics of waiting are disappearing. As patience and happiness people can get from waiting are fading away and replaced with convenience, are they not also losing time for missing and thinking somebody? "Sound of silence" by Lee Moon-Bae reminds us of an old barbershop in undeveloped neighborhoods on the contrary to noise from machines and the life passing like an arrow. This is an old barber's patience cutting the hair slowly as opposed to people's impatience in just following the changes in modern life. ● Lee Moon-Bae's writings embrace various motions and sounds that people mat forget easily, and it finally leads them to think about beauty of waiting. There exist period that people could not write down as they ate always in a hurry. The author is trying to reinterpret our daily life though an etching, aquatint, acrylic, digital printer and silk screen, and it may seem to be unusual. However, it is surprising to discover us missing the past through those instruments. People spend daily lives without having enough time to consider what they are missing. Lee Moon-Bae's writings have people think what they ate missing and losing. I think this is the power and beauty of writing. I give my applaud to the author since he let me observe tiny things surrounding my life and have time to realize how precious these are. ■ Kim young Cheol
