매체는 하나의 환경(ambient)이다. ● 신문이나 방송 같은 대중매체에서부터 공학적 의미의 테크놀로지를 포함하고 주변에 늘려있는 사물을 포함한다. 우리가 개입하는 사유와 공간 그리고 시간을 재편하는 모든 환경과 사회적 장치를 모두 포함한다. 이 새로운 매체를 활용하는 예술의 형태는 과학 기술의 발달이나 그로 인한 사회적 변화와 맞물려 확장되고 있다.

강주연의 작업도 매체의 동원에서 시작한다. 그의 작업에는 때로 비디오와 오브제가 소환되었고 때로는 사각의 프레임이 무질서하게 뿌려지기도 했고 또 때로는 예기치 않는 오브제가 공간을 연출하기도 한다. 그러던 그의 작업이 이번에는 벽면을 구획하고 있다. 벽면에는 형형색색의 원구가 층층이 키 재기를 하고 있고 마치 아직 해야 할 말이 남았음을 외치듯이 원구는 일제히 입을 벌리고 있다. 아마도 이번 여덟번째 개인전은 7회 전람회의 연장선상에 있는 듯하다. 그래서 동원된 매체도 7회 전람회의 절단된 급수용 파이프다. ● 예술은 자유로운 생의 찬미(讚美)이면서 부자유스러운 생에 대한 찬악(讚惡)이기도 하다. 그러므로 산업사회에서 태어난 사물들은 찬미에도 동원되고 찬악도 동원된다. 이렇듯 가변적인 매체는 그의 수공예적 행위 사이에서 작업의 조건을 충족하는데, 다행히 미술의 조건인 반복된 행위와 이 행위의 조건 속에서 자리한다. 조각에서는 간혹 힘든 노동이 작품보다 앞서는 경우가 있다. 그래서 예술이 무게와 부피로 증명되는 일도 종종 있다. 하지만 그의 작업은 가볍고 작은 재료와 단순 반복하는 행위 뒤에 은폐되어 있다. 미술과 사물의 경계에서 반복하고 있으며 앞으로도 그렇게 할 모양이다.

까뮈는 '작가수첩'에서 몽상들은 엄청난 권태에서 태어난다고 했다. 그래서 더욱 몽상의 길을 걷기를 기원하고, 다소 엉뚱한 생각과 이질적인 매체사이를 헤메고 있는 그의 작업이 하나의 환경(ambient)에서 안주하지 않고 자유롭기를 기원한다. ■ 황무현

medium is an ambient. ● mass media as newspaper and broadcasting include the technologies as an engineering and the things around us, as well as the thoughts and spaces in which we are involved and the ambient and the social systems by which time is arranged. Nowadays this kind of art using these new media is expanding its scope because of developed scientific technologies and ensuing social changes. ● the past Gang Ju-yuean's works also started with the employment of media.works summoned videos or objects creating unexpected spaces while others summoned square frames in disorderly ways. This time he focuses on the division of the wall. On the wall there are colorful globes, smaller or taller, whose mouths are open as if they speak to us that they left their words unspeaked. Perhaps this 8th exhibition of his is considered an extension of his 7th exhibition in the light of the use of the medium of severed water-supply pipes which had appeared the 7th exhibition. ● The art praises the freedom of life while it abused its limitations. So the things in the industrial society are mobilized for praises as well as abuse. As such, these unsettled media are in between his handcraft-like actions which fortunately meet the conditions of the repetition of the art. In sculpture the labour exceeds the work, so that the art is often identified with the weight and the volume. On the contrary, his works are behind light and small materials and the repetition of actions. His works are repeated on the boundary of art and things, which is expected to keep going. ● Camus said in the Writer's Notebook that fantasies are born in the tremendous languid. That is why we wish his works to keep going in the tremendous languid the path of fantasies with unexpected thoughts and heterogeneous media, not settled in an ambient. ■ Mu-hyun
