살은방 Living RoomS

꿈의 현실화를 위한 욕망과 충동 ● 현실은 꿈을 꾸고 꿈은 현실을 모방한다. 그 누구의 말도 아닌, 꿈인 듯 현실인 듯 그림인 듯 사진인 듯, 참 모호한 경계의 상황이다. 결코, 아슬아슬한 불안함이나 애처로움은 없고 영화적인 모험심과 이야기의 감각적 용감함이 단연 돋보인다. 작가가 존재하는 현실이 꿈을 꾸어 만들어 낸 꿈의 현실이 다시 꿈을 꿔 현실이 된다. 이순영 작품의 인상이다.

이순영 작가의 시선을 따라가다 보면 그녀가 머물렀던 공간의 시시각각 기억의 일면이 한 공간에 집합으로 꿈을 꾸듯 현실을 벗어나는 가상을 흉내 내는 작은 현실을 만나게 된다. 그 가녀린 현실에 대한 흔들림을 미니어처 오브제의 설치와 조명, 사진의 도움을 받아 강한 모험심의 극적劇的 연출의 『살은방 Living RoomS』이 펼쳐진다. 작가가 염두에 두는 상상세계를 현실화시키기 위한 미니어처로 재현된 극적 현실의 공간이다. 가상과 실재의 경계를 모호하게, 혹은 그 경계의 존재를 불필요함으로 전락시켜버리곤 한다. 현실의 삶에서 재현할 수 없는 욕망에서 비롯되는 욕구불만은 모든 사물과 장치들로부터 파생되고 시작된다. 그리고 상상의 나래는 결국 현실을 바탕으로 하는 상상이 된 현실로 구성되고 서사를 담아내는 현실의 공간으로 완성된다. 다시 그 공간을 가상과 현실의 경계로 몰아세운 사진으로 공간을 스캔하는 순간, 작품 앞의 모두에게 가상과 현실 판독을 위한 의구심과 각각의 상징이 뿜어내는 즐거움을 선사한다. 이것은 작가가 현실을 기본으로 상상해낸 이야기기에 가능하며, 그것은 상상의 이야기를 현실화시키기 위한 미니어처 설치방법 등장의 이유이기도 하다. 그 미니어처의 공간은 가상이 아닌 현실 그 상태이며, 사진으로 인해 가상인 상태를 모방하게 된다. 즉 상상에서 비롯된 욕망은 가상을 닮은 충동의 현실일 뿐이다.

이주된 현실에서 얻어진 방 ● 이순영 작가는 자신의 모든 것을 작업의 단서로 끌어올려 상상한다. 자신의 유년기에서 프랑스에서 거주하며 작업하기까지의 여정과 지금 현재까지, 방이라는 지독히 사적인 공간에서 자유롭게 상상한다. 가령, 벽을 뚫고 나무들이 자라 숲이 방에 가득 차는, 늦은 오후 바람에 날리는 커튼을 보면서 자신의 방을 바다 위를 항해하는 배로 상상하고, 불면증의 고민들을 무순으로 키워내는! 그것은 어떤 제어나 자기반성의 힘도 필요치 않은 자유롭고 자신의 의식체계를 주체로 삼아 그대로 따라가는 상상의 사건이자 현실의 사건으로 재현되는 '이순영의 방'인 것이다. 그곳은 작가가 살았었던, 살고 있는 방이다. 그 『살은방 Living RoomS』은 작가의 모든 것을 아우르는 테두리로 대체된 공간이며 태초의 자궁이기도 하다. 그 태초의 자궁의 느낌은 모두의 기억 속에 없는 본능의 단서로 인지하는 공간으로, 그렇기에 이순영의 방은 가상도 현실도 아닌 복합적인 공간으로의 존재가 가능하며, 그 낯설음이 주는 허구fiction와 실재nonfiction의 서사narrative를 가지게 된다. '이순영의 방'은 자신이 존재하고 자신의 시선과 상상이 시작되는 장소인 동시에, 그 방을 바라보는 타자로써의 자신의 시선이 존재하는 방이기도 하다. 그것은 현실에 기생하여 얻어진 무형의 상상을 유형의 입체로 제작하여 현실화 시키고, 그 현실을 사진으로 기록하는 타자가 된 자신을 목격한다. 자신의 욕망에서 비롯된 '방'이라는 공간이 자신이 타자가 되는 순간부터 보편적 타자의 욕망에 부흥하는 '환상의 방'이 되기도 하는 것이다. ■ 김재원

Desire and impulse to realize dream ● Reality dreams a dream, and the dream imitates reality. It is not someone's saying but seems like a dream or reality, or perhaps a picture. It is really an obscure situation. There is never any riskily anxiety or piteousness but dramatic adventure or sensual boldness of the story are very highlighted. Reality where the artist exists dreams a dream to produce reality of the dream which again dreams a dream to become reality. This is the impression from Lee Soon Young's work. ● Following the artist, Lee Soon Young's eyes, you will find little reality which imitates fiction freed from reality as if it were dreaming as the gathering of one aspect of momentary memories about the space she stayed. As the shaking of the fragile reality gets help from the installation of miniature objets, lighting, and photographing, 'Living RoomS' with dramatic expression of strong adventure is unfolded. It is the space of dramatic reality reproduced with miniatures to actualize the imaginary world she has in mind. It makes the border of reality and virtuality obscure, or it degraded the border itself into nothing. Frustration resulted from the need that cannot be reproduced in real life is derived and begun with all the objects or devices. And the wings of imagination become complete after all with the space of reality consisting of reality becoming imagination based on reality and containing narrative. Again, when the space is scanned with the pictures that drive the space into the border of reality and virtuality, it gives all in front of the work the pleasure spurting out from each symbol and the doubt to interpret reality and virtuality. This is possible because it is the story imagined by the artist taking reality as the basis, and it is also the reason why miniature installation was used to actualize the imaginary story. The space of miniatures is not virtual but real, and it imitates the virtual state with images. To wit, the need originated from imagination is just reality of impulse resembling virtuality. The room gained from moved reality ● Artist Lee Soon Young raises and imagines all she has as clues for her work. She has imagined freely from the journey of her work living in France in her childhood and up until now, in the plainly, personal space of a room. For instance, watching the room full of forest with trees growing and coming through the wall and the curtain blowing in the wind in a late afternoon, she imagines her room as a ship heading for somewhere in the ocean. What grows the worries of insomnia to radish sprouts! It is the event of imagination taking as the subject and following obediently her own free consciousness system that requires no control or power for self-reflection and also the room of the artist 'Lee Soon Young' reproduced as an event of reality. It is the room that she lived and now lives. That 'Living RoomS' is the space replaced with the frame that embraces all she has and also is the womb in the beginning. The feel of the womb in the beginning is the space perceived as the clue of instinct which does not exist in anyone's memory; thus, Lee Soon Young's room can exist as a complex space, neither reality nor virtuality. And it comes to have the narrative of fiction and nonfiction given from strangeness. 'Lee Soon Young's room' is the place where she herself exists and her viewing and imagination begin and also the place where her viewing of the room as the other exists at the same. She designs and actualizes intangible imagination gained from being parasitic on reality as a tangible cubic, and she witnesses herself becoming the other recording that reality with images. The space of 'RoomS' originated from her own needs also becomes the 'fantasy room' corresponding to the general other's needs from the moment when she becomes the other. ■ Kim Jae Won
