카메라, 신발, 기구, 헬리콥터, 배낭, 그리고 피렌체의 성당까지 조각적 실체로 드러내는 작가의 작업은 그 섬세함에 놀라게 한다. 용접이라는 표현 방법의 프로세스를 생각해보면 더욱 수고로움과 손끝의 인내를 감지하게 된다. 최근 다시 동화를 읽는다며 자신의 이야기를 꺼내는 작가는 첫 개인전을 '여행'과 '성숙'이라는 테마로 준비했다고 한다. 그가 만들어낸 작업들을 보면 여행의 준비와 여정을 느낄 수 있는 단서들로 충만하다. 그의 작업은 스스로 여행을 갔던 그 흔적들과, 동화를 통한 심리적 여행의 상상적 이야기들로 채워져 있다. 그런 그의 작업들은 순수함, 간결함, 솔직함으로 요약할 수 있다.

유년시절 누구나 아름다운 삶에의 의지와 희망을 키운다. 시간이 흐르면서 희망의 크기가 줄어들거나 의지가 꺾이기도 한다. 상처도 받고 상처도 주는 삶의 시행착오의 순간순간을 지나며 사람에겐 그 만의 깊이가 생긴다. 누구나 그렇게 성숙의 시간을 지나오는 것이다. 작가의 여행은 어떤 의미에서 매우 구체적이고 실제적인 여행의 순간을 포착하는 오브제를 드러냄과 동시에 인간의 정신적 성숙의 여정을 담은 까닭에 중의적 메타포로 작용한다. 먼저 작가의 여행은 물리적으로 여행 가방을 싸고 카메라를 챙기고 여행 전날의 설렘을 모두 느낄 수 있게 한다. 어떤 여행도 떠나기 전날 밤만큼의 벅찬 기대를 가질 수 없는 것처럼 작가는 그 때의 느낌을 한 조각 한 조각 이었을 게다. 여행 배낭 안에 있어야 할 작은 소품 하나하나도 그려내듯 만들어내어 그 여행의 단서들을 재현한 것이다. 그는 이렇게 사실적으로 재현된 오브제를 통해 여행의 기억과 정서를 음미하며 성찰하는 시간으로 나아간다. ● 실제 사물을 옮겨놓듯 재현한 그의 오브제들은 그를 한걸음 물러서서 자신을 바라보게 한다. 작가가 만들어 놓은 형상들은 분명 자신의 이야기였지만 자신의 손에서 벗어나 대상화되면서 일종의 물리적, 심리적 거리에서 바라볼 수 있게 된 것이다. 마치 자신의 일기를 시간의 간격을 두고 무심코 읽는 것처럼. 작가는 적어도 정서적 상처나 심리적 잔상으로 남은 삶의 유쾌하지 않은 부분일지라도 되돌아보며 객관화할 수 있는 단서를 갖게 된 셈이다. 스스로의 입을 통해 자신의 심리적 상태를 말하는 순간 얽매였던 정서적 트라우마로부터 자유로워지는 것과도 흡사하다. 그런 의미에서 그가 제안한 여행과 성숙의 의미는 맞물리게 된다. 몸을 수고롭게 하면서 체험적으로 얻게 되는 여행에서의 정서와 심리적 여정을 통한 반성으로 인해 넓어지고 깊어지는 사람의 품이 그가 말하는 성숙이다.

즉 실제의 여행과 그 단서들을 통한 심리적 항해를 하는 까닭에 그의 작업에서 여행이 중의적 메타포인 것이다. 게다가 그의 작업들은 자신의 물리적 여행의 단서와 반추에 더하여 상상과 기억이 더해진 까닭에 복잡 미묘하다. 오즈의 마법사, 아름다운 비행, E.T 등의 동화 혹은 다른 텍스트의 요소가 더해지면서 자신 속에 욕망하는 순수함 혹은 또 다른 기지 같은 것을 발견하게 한다. 최근 들어 동화를 읽는다는 작가의 일상에 묻어있는 아름다운 가치와 진리를 믿는 순수함에의 욕망이 내재된 것은 아닌가 한다. ● 그런 작가의 오브제들이 투영하는 세계는 더 없이 맑다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그 오브제들이 하려는 말은 그의 솔직함 때문인지 너무나 직설적이다. 의심 없이 지시적으로 그가 전하는 메시지를 단박에 알아채는 것이 못내 아쉬운 것도 사실이다. 직설적인 것이 사실적인 표현의 본성임에는 틀림없으나 테크닉의 견고함을 넘어서 두터운 의미망의 조각을 고대하게 된다. ■ 박남희

여정이 만드는 성숙 ● 상처를 보듬는 방법은 그들의 이야기를 듣는 것에서 출발한다. 좋았던 기억들과 더불어 곳곳에서 받았던 상처들을 찾아 듣는 것. 그것은 가장 기본적인 치유의 시작이다. 여정도 같은 힘을 가지고 있다. 우리를 일상의 틀에서 툭 털어내, 객관적인 시각으로 나 스스로를 관조할 수 있게 도와준다. 그리고 그 안에서 우리는 각자의 추억들과 아픔들을 동시에 보듬을 수 있다. 간단히 말해, 여정은 우리 스스로를 성숙케 하는 시간인 것이다. 그것이 실제로 떠나는 물리적 여정이든, 아니면 동화 속으로 떠나는 관념적 여정이든 말이다. ■ 이태강

You will finally discover priceless treasures when what has been observed throughout the journey becomes meaningful." (From 『Alchemist』 by Paulo Coelho) ● Works by an artist shown via sculptural entities including camera, shoes, equipments, helicopter, back pack, and Catholic Church in Firenze conveys a surprise of delicacy. In the light of process via expression method of molding, a demanding work and persistence of an artist are implied. The artist brought up his own personal story, saying that he started reading tales these days, and prepared a theme of 'travel' and 'maturity' for his first private exhibition. Works created by him are immersed with clues that convey all the procedures of preparation for the travel and its long lasting journey. His works are full of traces of previous travels on his own and creative stories relating to psychological travel via tales. In this sense, his works can be summarized into purity, simplicity, and honesty. ● People build a strong will and hope toward a beautiful life in youth. As time passes by, people sometimes realize their hopes foundered or their will withered. Trial and error of the life that hurt others or be hurt by others convey a depth of characteristics for each one of people. People have their certain time period to get matured. Travels of the artist reveal 'objet' that catches instantaneous moment of very detailed and realistic travel in some sense but, at the same time; act as an intermediate metaphor for containing a journey of emotional maturity. First of all, travel of the artist conveys a very specific experience of physically packing up the bag, bringing the camera, and a thrill on the day before travel. No travels can give such a high expectation and thrill as much as the night of the day before travel, the artist must have connected every single puzzle of instantaneous feeling of travel. He created an image of all equipments in the bag needed for travel, reproducing clues of that specific travel. Via practically reproduced objet, he takes on step further to retrospection with enjoyment to his heart's contents of memories and sentiment from the travel. ● His objet were reproduced of an image as real objects were placed makes him take one step back and reflect on him. Configuration made by an artist is all about his own personal stories but expands a boundary of physical and psychological distance of objects for visibility. The artist obtains objective clues from reflection in spite of unhappy part of life that emotional wounds or psychological after-images have left. It is similar when he becomes free from emotional trauma at the very moment that he expresses his current psychological condition. In this sense, the meaning of travel and maturity that he suggests is connected with each other. Maturity of what he refers to as is a dignity that a person might build with reflection via sentimental and psychological journey from travel. ● In other words, his own works have travel as intermediate metaphor in a sense that they psychological voyage via real travels and their clues. Furthermore, his works are complicated on the ground that imagination and memories are added with clues and reflection of his physical travel. Tales such as the Wizard of Oz, Beautiful Flight, and ET or other elements of texts are added, leading him to find purity that he truly aspires deep in his mind or other senses of wit. Recently, a strong sense of feeling has come up that reading a tale might be inherent in desire of purity of a belief for beautiful values and truths contained in a daily life of the artist. ● The world that is reflected by objet cannot be any purifier. Nevertheless, what these object represent is too directed due to his honesty. Easy way of figuring out his direct message without any doubt gives a sense of frustration. Directness is sure a nature of objective expression but also conveys an expectation in the form of combined meanings beyond technical solidity. ■ Namhee Park

Maturity through Journey ● The way to heal hurts starts with listening to his or her story. Discovering and listening to good memories as well as received hurts - It is the beginning of the most fundamental healing. Journey has the same power to heal. It helps us get out of our daily routine and see ourselves from an objective perspective. So in our journey we can take care of our memories and hurts. Simply, journey is a process or a time that makes us go toward maturity- whether it is a physical journey to leave for somewhere or it is an abstract journey to go into a fairy tale. ■ LEETAEKANG
