자연을 읽다 Read nature

2011년 10월, 경기도 가평군 상면 연하리 조종천 주변, 30여명의 작가들이 2박 3일을 함 께 보내며 작업하고, 흔적을 남기려 연하리 노인회관에 짐을 풀었다. 스물여섯 번이라는 회 수가 쌓이는 동안 매년 해왔던 일이지만 올해는 여름이 아닌 가을이라는 새 친구를 맞아 치 루는 일이기에 더욱 더 설레고 풍요로 왔다.

'자연을 읽다.'- 자연은 읽을 수 있는 텍스트가 아니다. 근대 이래 서구에서 시작된 이성 중 심의 기계론적 세계관은 자연을 해석하고 쪼개어 분석해 왔다. 환원주의 과학이 주류를 이 루면서 자연은 그저 극복하고 연구해야 할 대상일 뿐이었다. 그러나 우리(동양)는 자연이 극복해야할 대상이 아닌 거스르지 않고 그 주기에 맞춰 함께 살아내야 한다는 것을 몸소 알 고 있었다. 하지만 더 이상 자연은 우리 삶의 리듬이 되지 못하고 자연관찰도서나 식물도감 속에 박재되어 읽어야 할 또 하나의 텍스트로만 여겨진다. 과학과 이론적인 지식들처럼 추 상화하고 객관화하는 과정을 밟아온 것이다.

'자연을 읽다'는 자연이 결코 음성이나 기표의 언어로 읽힐 수 없다는 반어적 표현이다. 대신 자연을 지금 여기 온몸의 모든 감각으로 느끼고 겪고 표현하고 대화하며 함께 살고자 하는 것이다. 삼십여 가지의 자연을 읽은 이야기와 흔적들이 펼쳐진다. 나 또한 3일 동안 정말 원 없이 자연을 읽었다. 가을을 읽고 또 읽으며 감동했다. 강 너머 저편에 붉어진 나무와 산은 아침 나절과 오후가 달랐으며 다음날엔 더욱더 짙어졌다. 조종천과 논 사이엔 둑 역할도 하고 농 로 역할도하는 폭 좁은 시멘트 포장길이 있는데, 여러 번 그 길을 지나며 바라본 산과 하 늘, 강은 바라보며 걷는 것만으로도 가슴이 시원했고 지루할 틈 없이 새롭고 또 새로웠다. 운좋게도 물속에서돌을나르며물새들의물을박차고날아오는날개짓소리를가까이에 서 들었다. 귓가에 새의 자유로운 날개 짓 소리를 들었던 적이 있었던가? TV속 자연 다큐 멘터리사운드가 아닌 그 생명력 넘치는 소리를 귀로 읽은 것이다.

다른 작가들도 나처럼 자연을 읽으며 교감했을 것이라 믿는다. 돌을 나르며, 나뭇가지들을 모으고 엮으며, 모래를 파고 매만지며 갈대들을 모으며 그리고 자연이 품어주는 그 곳에서 쉬고 즐기며... 이번엔 특별히 일본작가 아키히로 히로시씨가 바쁜 시간을 쪼개 방문해 감동적인 퍼포먼스를 보여주었다. 석양이 질 무렵 자연의 모든 것과 온몸으로 교신하는 듯한 그의 몸짓은 시간을 넘어 영원과 맞닿은 것이었고, 노을 진 하늘을 가로지르며 날아가는 새들의 울음소리와 반응하는 장면에선 진정 그 새들과 영혼으로 대화를 나누는 것 같았다. 짧은 시간이었지만 내가 읽은 것들을 가슴깊이잘접어두었다가일상에지칠때,스튜 디오에서 작업이 잘 풀리지 않을 때마다 다시 꺼내 읽어야겠다. ■ 조미영

'Read nature' - 2011 magamnews 26th exhibition ● October in 2011, About 30 artists had unpacked to artwork together and leave some traces at Yeonha-ri hall of the elderly, Around cho-jong river Yeonha-ri Sang-myeon, Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do. even though the exhibitions had been held over 26times, It was rich and exiting to be held in autumn not in summer, like making a new friend. ● 'Read nature'- nature cannot be read as a text. Since the modern era, The mechanistic view of world started from wastern has regarded as nature to be analyzed and divided. It could be the only subject to be studied and overcome by reductive science mainly. but we(eastern) had knowledge that nature was not something to be against but live together to the rhythm of nature. meanwhile, nature is regarded as a text being read like stuffed things in an illustrated plant & animal book not a rhyme of our life anymore. It has procedure to objectify and abstract as science and theories. ● 'Read nature' is an ironical expression, nature cannot be read as spoken language and the signifier. therefor, that is to live to experience and to express and to talk together using senses of whole body, here and now. About thirty traces of reading nature spread out. I had read nature fully for three days also. I was impressed reading autumn more. Trees and mountains getting red across the river looked differently from morning to afternoon, got darker next day. there was a narrow road between the river and rice fields for a bank and a farm road, I've passed the road several times, the mountains and sky that I looked made my mind cool and refresh. I heard the sound of flaps of wings very close luckily when I was moving stones in the water. have I heard the sound of wild birds? I read the vital sound with my ears not in TV documentary. ● I believe that other artists might communicate with reading nature as me, moving stones, weaving branches, touching sands, gathering reeds and enjoying in the place surrounded by nature. Especially, Akiro-hi rosi - japanese artist- visited to show an impressive performance in his busy schedule. around sunset, His gestures that communicating with everything of nature was the touch with eternity such as. he reacted with the sound of birds flying across the sky. that moment he was supposed to talk to them with soul. even if It was short, I would pack everything in my mind. I will unpack to read them when I feel tired and have hard time in my art working. ■
