자연과 문명 사이 ● 자연은 인간의 힘이 더해지지 않은 천연 그대로의 상태이다. 그리고 문명은 사람의 지혜가 자연을 정복하여 정신적, 물질적으로 사회가 진보된 상태이다. 요즘 우리의 주변에서 볼 수 있는 자연 재해들을 보면 인간은 아무리 발전을 하였어도 자연 앞에는 미약하고 불안한 존재임을 알 수 있다. 자연과 문명이라는 주제로 한지작업을 하는 김학일작가는 직접 뜬 한지위에 돌들을 반복적으로 찍어서 자국을 낸다. 크고 작은 돌 들의 자국들이 얼핏 보면 책 속에 상형문자 같기도 하고 또 어떻게 보면 자연 속의 섬이나 산 같이 보인다. 먹을 사용하고 색을 최대한 자제한 그의 작품의 재료 또한 모두 자연에서 얻어진 것이다.

김학일 작가의 작품은 문명생활에 지친 나머지 자연이나 정신적인 세계로 돌아가고픈 현대 인간의 마음을 그대로 담고 있는 듯 하다. 문명을 파괴해야 할 대상으로 보거나 전면 부정하는 것이 아니라 문명과 자연의 조화로운 공존을 모색하고자 하는 시각이 바탕에 깔려있다. 과학과 문명의 발달은 우리에게 커다란 행복을 안겨주었지만 작가는 그 특유의 은은하고 고요한 침묵의 메시지로 우리의 삶의 질과 정신적인 풍요로움은 과연 어떠한가 뒤돌아보게 한다. ■ 김현경

Between the nature and the civilization ● The nature is staying in front of us as the natural state itself to which any human being's force is added fundamentally. And the civilization is the state the nature is conquered by the intelligence of human being and in which the society is spiritually and materially advanced. Nowadays, as we have to watch out such natural disasters that we can see frequently around our living zone, we can recognize once more that we are only weak and anxious human beings in front of the nature, though the world of human being has been continuously developed and civilized. ● The Painter Kim Hak-il who has been always devoting his spirit of art to the work of Korean traditional paper mainly focused on the theme of nature and civilization usually makes the traces by pressing stone repeatedly. At first glance, those traces of small and big stones look like hieroglyphics, or, in another view, they look like islands or mountains in the nature. Usually the ink stick is his principal material of drawing in sense of retraining the colors as possible as he can do. The materials of his works are mostly gained from the nature. ● The works of the painter Kim Hak-il look like to contain the mind of people of the modern society, that is to say, our deep wish to return to the nature or spiritual world as we have been for long while tired of the living in the civilized world. He does not look at the civilization as the object to destroy or deny its substance wholly. Rather, the sight to strive to find out the harmonized co-existence way of the nature and the civilization is laid in his drawings. ● Although the development of science and civilization has brought us an enormous happiness, however, this painter makes us look back ourselves and ask 󰡒what about the quality of our lives and are we really rich in sense of spirituality?󰡓 through his unique quiet tranquillity and a message of silence. ■ Kim Hyun-kyoung
