알 수 없는 대답들 / The Riddling Answers

수상하다. 남헌우의 마음 속에는 어떤 '불편한 세계'가 있나 보다. 채우기보다는 '비워진' 그의 작품들에게서 우리는 어떤 부재와 공허함을 떠올린다. 대부분의 공허함은 고요함과 침묵으로 대변되지만 어쩐지 그의 공허함은, 소란(騷亂)스럽다. 과묵하고 단순한 그의 작품 속에는 소통과 불통, 사랑과 비관, 실재와 유령, 소란과 침묵, 세계의 복잡한 감정과 의문들이 저마다의 목소리를 내며 자라나고 있다.

그의 작품 속에서는 매번 싸움이 벌어진다. 하얀 여백과 격정적인 색의 능청스러운 배치, 고요한 여백에 불쑥 솟은 강렬한 붓의 흐름을 보고 있으면 타협과 휴전이 없는 전쟁이 상상된다. 어쩌면 이것이 작가가 세계와 맞서는 방식일 수도 있겠다. 작가에게 있어서 미술관의 흰 공간과 캔버스는 작가 자신이 끊임없이 숨을 불어 넣어 주어야 하는 아군, 동시에 지지 않고 맞서야 하는 적군과도 같을 것이다. 이러한 전쟁 속에서 남헌우는 정복과 패배 대신 '공존'의 방식을 선택했다. 그는 여러 존재들이 각자의 위치에서 꿈틀거리며 살아가는 모습을 그대로 '보여 주고' 있다. 평화도 없고 무력도 없는 세계. 어느 한 쪽의 손을 들어주지 않는 '복수 정답', 혹은 '답이 없음'의 세계.

그렇지만 나는 그의 작품들을 관조성(觀照性)과 애매함이라 부르는 것에 주저한다. 그것은 분명 타자와 사물, 사건과의 불편한 관계를 온몸으로 겪고 얻어 낸 이 세계의 작고 빛나는 진실이라 믿기 때문이다. 그의 작품들은 정지되어 있지만 현장성이 강하고 가공되지 않은 감정들이 뜨겁다. 그림을 그리는 이는 세계의 불편함을 끌어안으며 내내 마음이 고단했을 것이다. 오늘, 작품을 보는 이들이 저마다의 세계를 떠올리며 마음이 고단해졌으면 좋겠다. 따뜻하면서 서늘했으면 좋겠다. 사랑을 하고, 돌아갔으면 좋겠다. 김소정

That's strange. Maybe there is some 'Awkward Place' in Heon-woo Nam's mind. We can remind absence and hole in his 'empty' works rather than filled. Much of empty is represented to silence and placidity, but noisy, in his. His pieces grow, silently and simply, each complicacies and questions just like communicate / noncommunicate, loveholic / pessimism, existence / ghost and noisy / quiet. His work resembles angry woman. It does not explain why she is so angry, but we can read feelings in her face. What a woman! So his actions are 'awkward'. Something uncomfortable when we finish looking into his works. ● A Quarrel usually rises in his works. We can imagine continuous battle while the brushes strongly flow in white blank, hypocritical placement and silence. Perhaps, this matches the artist's world view. For the artist in the gallery, white places and canvas are the enemy which he can't defeat, at the same time, the allies which he breathe into continuously. In the battlefield, Nam takes 'coexistence' rather than conquer and victory. He 'shows' many beings' lifestyles living in one's position wriggling. The worlds of non-peaceful and non-forces. The Life of 'Multiple answer' and 'No answer' which one cannot defeat the other. ● But I hesitate his works called contemplation and ambiguity. It is clearly small-shining fact, I believe, that experience another, matter and uncomfortable relationship head and ears. His pieces are stopped, but on-the-spotted, and hot raw feelings. The artist must be tired during the work times with embracing awkwardness. ● Today, I wish many viewers would be tired with reminding his world. And feel warm and cool.
