2004년 노스햄튼 대학교 입학 후 좋은 작업환경 시설과 수준 높은 수업의 파인아트코스 과정을 통해 사진과 미디어에 대한 많은 관심을 가지게 되었으며 또한 매체를 통한 다양한 연구와 실험적인 작품을 창조해 가는 과정에서 풍부한 경험을 쌓을 수 있었다. 2007년 학교를 졸업하면서 미디어 아트의 선구자적 역할을 주도했던 작가 백남준에 연구에 관심을 가지게 되었고, 특히 그와 한국 현대미술의 모색을 통한 작업의 새로운 방향성을 찾기 위해 한국 행을 결심하였다. ● 2007년 여름, 한국의 새로운 환경은 나에게 독특하고 특별한 경험 및 감성을 느끼게 하는 장소였으며 또한 나의 작업의 개념과 모티브에 새로운 시각과 변화를 가져오는 계기가 되었다. 카메라의 렌즈를 통해 보듯 나의 시각에 비치는 새로운 주변환경은 제 작업의 매우 중요한 요소이다. 매일 보고 지나치는 것들이 나의 작품 속에서 나타나기 때문이다.

"시간의 흐름"을 인식하고 또 재인식하는 과정에서 미술조형언어로 어떻게 시각화 할 것인가?라는 테마는 예술가들에 창작의 발원으로서 주요한 모티브였다. 시시각각 변화하는 찰나적 순간과 공간에 대한 다양한 해석과 이미지의 시각화는 20세기 현대미술의 장르-인상주의, 큐비즘, 퓨처리즘, 현대의 3차원 가상현실-속에서 창의적 기법의 모색을 도모하고 신 개념의 조형언어를 개발하는 등 동시대 예술가들에게는 커다란 도전이었다. 나의 작품에 영향을 준 작가들은 David Hockney, Jenny Holzer, 그리고 나의 대학 교수인 John Harper등이 있다.

"immersive environments"라는 테마에 크게 매력을 느끼기 시작한 때는 노스햄튼 대학교에서 수업하던 시기부터였다. "immersive environments"에 대해 작업을 하는 과정 중 나의 작품을 통해 작품을 보는 사람이 보다 작품에 몰입할 수 있도록 하고 싶었고 작품 가운데에 있다고 느끼도록 해주고 싶었다. 그래서 나는 대형사진을 이용하는 방법을 생각해 보게 되었다. ● 나의 작품은 "시간의 흐름"을 여러 각도에서 촬영한 장면들을 담아내고 있다. 여러 장의 사진이 모여 한 순간의 장소를 구성하고 있으며 각각의 사진 한 장 한 장은 독립적이면서도 연속적인 연결의 구성을 통해 바람에 흔들리는 꽃, 거리를 걷는 사람 등 보다 찰나적 시간의 움직임을 볼 수 있다. 사진을 하나하나 배치하는 작업방식의 과정에서 나는 사진을 찍었을 때와는 다른 색다른 경험을 하게 된다.

나의 작업을 보면서 상쾌한 공기의 봄, 강한 대비를 보여주는 산의 질감, 하늘을 가로막는 높은 빌딩 등 주변 환경 사이에서 보이는 다른 부분들을 인식하게 된다. 따라서 나의 각각의 작품들을 통해 그 순간 내가 보았던 풍경과 느낌들을 나의 작품을 보는 이들과 공유하고 싶다. ■ 마틴톰슨

In 2004, I enrolled on Northampton University's Fine Art course. Using the wide range of facilities there, I was able to pursue my interest in lens-based media further. I graduated from Northampton in 2007, and decided to leave England in order to continue research on artist Baek Nam June, in Korea. ● Moving to Korea in summer 2007 provided me with a new culture and environment in which I would find myself making art. The environment around me has always played a significant factor in my work, as these are the places I pass through every day and it, in turn, shapes my life, which gives my work direction. ● Capturing time and space has been a challenge for many artists, through cubism, to futurism, up to modern day use of 3D stereoscopic glasses. There are a number of artists who have had a strong influence upon my work, including David Hockney, Jenny Holzer, and my University professor, John Harper, to mention a few. ● My fascination with immersive environments came about when I was studying at Northampton University. During this time, I began to form a strong link between the world we live in, and my work. In order to depict this, I begun developing a method of creating large scale, digital photographic montages in order to encapsulate the viewer within the piece of work. The passing of time becomes apparent, upon closer inspection of the work, where the viewer can notice subtleties such as the wind moving a flower, or a person walking in the distance. ● When I view my work, I feel the difference between each of the surroundings, whether it the fresh air of spring, the stark contrast in textures in the mountains, or the impeding skyscrapers looming above me along a busy street. Each piece is created to try and allow the viewer to experience a snapshot of my memory, by pulling them from where they are and temporarily locating them in the place I once stood. ■ Martyn Thompson
