색깔의 즉흥연주자 변우식展에 ● 언제부터인가 매너리즘에 빠져들기 시작한 한국현대미술에서 변우식의 작품은 신선한 충격을 던져주고 있다. 원색적인 개성을 유감없이 발휘하는 그의 내면세계는 인간의 사랑, 종교, 평화, 인권, 죽음, 음악과 같은 것들로 농축되어 있고, 더 나아가서는 자연과 우주가 어우러져 즉흥연주를 하는듯한 인상을 우리에게 안겨준다. 이런 점에서 오늘의 한국화단에 한 획을 그을 수 있는 개성강한 작가가 탄생되는 순간이 아닐까 기대를 갖게 한다. ● 비보이(팝핀) 1세대라는 특별한 이력에서 뿜어내는, 춤과 음악이 어우러지는 열기를 화폭에 담는 독특한 즉흥연주 같은 분위기는 오직 그에게서만 느낄 수 있는 예술적 열정이며 그 결과인 것이기 때문이다. ● 넘치는 힘, 타고 난 끼, 이런 것들이 색채와 함께 리듬을 타고 표현되는 세계가 우리들에게 새로운 영감을 던져 준다. 그렇다고 하여 그는 현란하게 치장하지 않는다. 일상과 함께 하는 그의 현실은 소박하고 그대로 작품에 반영되고 있다. ● 아직은 치기 만만 하다고 해야 할 만큼 누구의 눈치도 보지 않고, 자신의 작품에 어떤 반응이 따를지 전혀 개의치 않는 태도가 스스로의 함정이 되지 않는다면 그는 대중 속에서 현실적인 숨쉬기를 할 것이며 그로인해 더 강한 독창성으로 구현될 것으로 믿는다. ■ 함섭

나의 작품 주제인 '어쿠스틱 러브(Acoustic Love)'는 우주와 자연 그리고 인간이 그 구분을 허물고 원초적으로 합일하는 유토피아의 구현을 의미한다. 내 작품의 모티브가 되는 영감의 원천은 다양한 삶의 체험을 통한 나의 자전적인 이야기들, 세상에 존재하는 모든 부당한 억압에 투쟁하는 인권, 믿음의 종교, 생사(生死) 그리고 음악이다. 나의 그림은 주제와 형식에 얽매이지 않으며, 어떠한 그림이론도, 재료도, 무시하고 싶다. 나에게 색은 세상에 존재하는 모든 소통과 자유의 소리이며, 영혼에 직접적으로 영향을 주는 힘인 것이다.

또한 즉흥적이고 유희적이며 자유분방한 나의 조형적 언어는 무의식의 세계-우주적 공간에 공존하는 리듬, 화음 그리고 멜로디가 원시적 자연과 원초적 순수가 결합되어 나온 내적 생명의 표출이자 관능적 벌거벗음이다. 2006년, 처음으로 그림을 그렸고, 전업 작가로서 5번째 개인전을 준비하게 되었다. 이번 전시는 유년시절부터 지금까지 오랜 시간 팝문화와 다양한 예술적 경험을 함께해온 내가 생각하는 한국적 팝아트(동양적 사유와 철학이 스며있는)에 대한 단상들이며, 이번 전시에 오브제로 사용된 옥과 못, 그리고 와인코르크마개는 치유와 사랑을 의미한다. 부족하지만 나의 열정과 광기의 에너지가 현대인들에게 작은 위안의 시간이 되길 진심으로 소망한다. ■ 변우식

Mr. Byun's work has introduced a new impact to the Modern Korean Arts, which are heavily influenced by the mannerism. His inner world, which exerts an individuality within the primary color, are concentrated with mankind's; love, religion, peace, human rights, death, and the music. Furthermore, it leaves an impression, in a form of mixture between the nature and the universe, to everyone. In this standpoint, one can expect to witness the birth of an artist. Artist that wields a great strength with individuality to influence Korea's world of the artists with a single stroke. As the first generation of B-Boy, or person who dedicates their lives in break dancing, and with exceptional curriculum vitae starts to pour out the heat. The heat that generated from the combination between dance and music are being transferred into the canvas. This unique improvisational atmosphere is the direct result of the passion in artistic form. His colors become a rhythm. A rhythm becomes an expression. An expression becomes an inspiration. An inspiration to everyone to discover the universe overflowing of the strength and the innate talent. He does not intend to embellish the life with glitters. Instead, he reflects the daily reality into his work in a simple manner. As long as he avoids such a downfall caused by an arrogance or self-gratification, he will remain within the masses of reality. He will continue to progress with the implementation of the originality. ■ Ham Sup

The theme of my work, "Acoustic Love", signify utopia comprised of the primal unity between the universe, the nature, and the mankind. The inspirational source of the motif in my work comes from; the personal experience, faith and religion, life and death, music and fighting for the human rights against all injustices around the world. My work is not tied to any form or the theme, and acknowledges neither theory nor formula. To me, the color exists in the world as the voice to all communication and freedom. Also it is the strength that influence the soul. My language is molded by the improvisation with playful and free spirit. In this language, there is a rhythm, chords, and melody that exists in the space between unconscious universe. These characteristics then combines with the primitive nature that is nothing but the pure primal. The result of this combination is an inner expression of the life and the sensual nakedness. This is the language in my possession. My very first professional work was started in the year 2006, and I have prepared for my 5th exhibition. This exhibition display my artistic experiences from the past and the present. It is also an example of what I perceive about Korean Pop Art absorbing the reason and the philosophy of the East. The object of this exhibition; a jade, a nail, and the wine cork stopper signifies the cure and the love. I sincerely wish that the energy, generated by my passion of madness, would bring the audience the moment of solace. ■ BYUNWOOSICK
