20th Bridge Guard

슬로바키아의 스트로보(Sturovo)와 헝가리의 에스터르곰(Esztergom)을 연결하는 마리아 발레리아 브릿지(Maria Valéria bridge)는 1895년에 세워져 1차 대전과 2차 대전을 거치면서 파괴되고 복구되기를 반복하다 2001년에야 다시 제 모습을 찾은 역사를 가지고 있다. 브릿지 가드(Bridge Guard)는 이 다리를 지키는 파수꾼을 의미하는 것으로, The City of Sturovo는 시(市)정책으로 Maria Valeria Bridge의 정신적 보호라는 상징적 의미를 가지고 작가와 과학자들을 위한 국제 레지던스 프로그램을 개설했다. 작가 백정기는 이 프로그램의 스무 번째 Bridge Guard 이며, 백정기의 작품전을 9월 24일부터 30일까지 Bridge Guard Art & Science Center에서 개최한다.

레지던스 기간 동안 작가는 스트로보와 에스터르곰에 위치한 기념비적인 동상이나 구조물들을 안테나로 이용해서 단파 라디오 주파수를 받아들이는 「Historical Antenna」프로젝트를 진행했다. 성당의 동상, 철제대교, 심지어 전쟁기념관의 탱크도 모두 전도체(전기가 통하는 물질)이기 때문에 전파를 받아들이기 위한 안테나로써의 성능을 가진다. 작품은 크게 안테나로 이용되는 구조물, 단파수신기와 구조물을 연결하는 전선, 라디오전파를 시각적으로 보여주는 스펙트럼분석기 그리고 받아들인 전파를 관객에게 직접 들려주는 나팔스피커로 구성되어 있다. 관객은 불특정다수로써 동상을 지나치며 라디오 소리를 듣거나 스펙트럼분석기를 보게 된다. 이 프로젝트는 오직 역사적, 정치적 혹은 종교적인 의미만을 통해 그 존재를 드러내는 상징적 구조물들을 안테나로 이용하고 그들이 공진하는 특정 라디오 주파수를 받아들이게 함으로써 구조물 그 자체의 실존하는 존재적 의미를 가지게 한다.

두 번째 프로젝트 「Landscape_Sturovo & Esztergom」은 스트로보와 에스터르곰 두 도시를 가로지르는 강물(도나우강)을 잉크로 이용해서 두 도시의 풍경사진을 프린트 하는 작업이다. 프린터 잉크 카트리지의 구조는 잉크뿐만 아니라 어떤 용액을 넣어도 작동이 가능하게 되어있기 때문에, 빗물이나 강물로도 사진을 프린트하기 위한 잉크로 사용하는 것이 가능하다. 이 경우에는 리트머스종이(ph 테스트종이)를 프린트 용지로 쓰면 도시의 폐수로 산성 혹은 알칼리를 띄게 된 강물이 리트머스종이에 반응함으로써 발색이 되고 결과적으로 청색과 적색으로 이루어진 흑백사진을 만들어낸다. 이 작품은 강과 도시의 밀접한 관계를 이미지(도시)와 그 이미지를 이루는 성분(강물)의 관계로 치환시킨다. ■ 브릿지 가드 아트 앤 사이언스 센터

Completed in 1895, the Maria Valeria Bridge linking Sturovo in Slovakia to Esztergom in Hungary has been repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. It was not until 2001 the bridge was restored to its original appearance. The Bridge Guard is a watchman guarding this bridge. As part of municipal policy the City of Sturovo has established an international residence program for artists and scientists with the purpose of and symbolic meaning of spiritual protection of the bridge. Artist Beak Jung-ki is the 20th bridge guard. His solo show takes place at the Bridge Guard Art & Science Center from September 24 through 30, 2011. ● During the residency period the artist executed the Historical Antenna Project using monumental statues and structures in Sturovo and Esztergom as antennas for receiving shortwave radio signals. Since statues in a Catholic church, bridges, even tanks in a war memorial are sorts of conductors, these can be used as antennas for receiving radio signals. This project consists of a structure used for an antenna, wire linking the structure to a shortwave receiver, a spectrum analyzer showing radio signals, and a speaker conveying received sound waves to viewers. This project uses only symbolic structures with historical, political, and religious meaning, and gives them an ontological meaning by enabling them to receive specific radio signals. ● The second project, Landscape: Sturovo & Esztergom, uses water of the Danube River as ink for printing scenes from the two cities. As a printer ink cartridge can contain any liquid, it is possible to use rain and river water instead of ink, when using Litmus paper for printing. The acidic or alkali river water caused by waste reacts to the Litmus paper and takes on color. As a result, a black-and-white photo with red and blue comes into being. This project substitutes images and its elements (river water) for a close relation between river and city. ■ Bridge Guard Art & Science Center
