아버지의 세계 In his World

아버지의 세계 ● 나를 둘러싸고 있는 세계는 어떤 사건과 계기를 통해 의미를 갖게 된다. 나는 관찰하고 기록하는 것으로 그것을 이해한다. 기록의 대부분은 직접적인 사건의 묘사가 아닌 드로잉의 형식으로 정제되어 나오고 이런 행위를 통해 그 안에 상관관계를 발견한다. 거기서 얻어지는 규칙들은 내가 이해하고 터득한 세계를 조합하는 방식으로 구축된다. 이것은 사회적 가치들이 만들어지고 통용되는 과정에서 발생하는 불합리한 것들을 개인화하여 그 나열을 흐트러뜨리기 위함이다. 「아버지의 세계 」는 가장 작은 사회 단위인 가족, 그중에서도 아버지에 관한 것이다. 그림에 등장하는 이미지들은 사회적으로 통용되는 아이콘과 경험에서 얻어지는 주변의 형태들이 대부분이다. 보편적으로 떠오르는 아버지상과 나의 아버지에 대한 일련의 사건과 기억들을 수집하고 그것을 섞어버림으로써 한번쯤은 살펴봐야 했던 그(그들)의 세계를 들어다 보고 싶었다. 크리스마스트리(원유추출장치), 깎아 만든 새, 식물, 푸른 넥타이, 세 개의 반지, 텅 빈 신부 복장...꼭 아름답지만은 않지만 그가 보편의 아버지로서 가져야 했던 갈등의 순간들은 내가 읽어야 하고 이해해야 했던 오브제들이 아니었을까? 사회적 관계로서 명명된 딸, 혹은 여성의 입장이 아닌 개별의 인간으로 그의 세계를 다시 재구성 하고자 한다. ■ 박경률

In his World ● The universe around me takes its meaning through accidental happenings and chance encounters. I try to make sense out of them by the means of observation and documentation, majority of which takes a refined form of drawing instead of direct depiction of the happenings. Such action often leads to a discovery of their interconnections. By combining the layers of the world as I understood, a new set of rules are created—this is to personalize and utterly break the irrational order created in the process of formulation and transmission of social values. In his World is about family, specifically the paternal figure, as the microcosm of society. The images appearing in the painting are derived from circulating social icons and other forms extricated from personal experiences. I wished to attempt to look into his (or their) world, at least once, by jumbling up the universal images of fatherhood with a series of happenings and memories on my father. A Christmas tree (oil well), a sculpted bird, plants, blue ties, three rings, and an empty cassock...these objects could be the keys to read and understand the not-always-beautiful moments of struggle that the fatherhood entails. Here, I wish to reconstruct his world, not as a socially-constructed position of a daughter or as a female but merely as an individual. ■ PARKKYUNGRYUL
