제강의 꿈 Dream of Jegang ● 중학교 1학년 때 이층 다락방에 드디어 내 방이 생겼다. (그 전까진 동생이랑 같이 썼다) 나는 나만의 공간이 생겨 너무나 좋았다. 조그마한 공간을 어떻게 꾸밀까 이리저리 궁리하다가 1m정도 되는 막대기 몇 개로 내가 누울 수 있는 정도의 넓이로 지지대를 세우고 그 위에 가벼운 이불을 덮었다. 처음으로 내가 의도한 대로 가장 이상적인 나만의 공간을 만들었다. 축 처진 이불 사이를 들어가서 누웠다. 어둡고 아무것도 보이지 않는 고요한 공간 속에서 드디어 나는 마음 속 깊은 곳의 원시성을 느꼈다. 나는 원시적인 것을 좋아한다. 그렇다고 원시인은 아니다. 나도 스마트폰의 편안함을 누리고 있으니 말이다. 단지 누구나 비슷한 생각을 하지만, 나는 누구인지에 대한 물음에서부터 시작해 자연과 인간, 만물의 뿌리는 어디서부터 시작되었는지에 대한 궁금증을 가지고 있었다. 그러다가 우연히 '제강'이라는 동물을 알게 되면서부터 그 궁금증을 조금 풀 수 있었다. ● 나는 상상동물(순수동물)이라는 주제를 가지고 작업을 하고 있다. 동양신화에서 제강은 혼돈(카오스)이라 한다. 제강의 생김새는 아주 심플하다. 얼굴도 없고(눈, 코, 입, 귀 없음) 동그란 몸에 날개가 네 개, 다리가 여섯 개 달려있는 모습이다. 내가 이 동물에 매료된 이유는 제강의 두 가지 취미 때문인데 바로 '노래'와 '춤'을 즐겼다는 것이다. 노래와 춤은 단순한 음악이나 무용이기 이전에 '소리'와 '움직임'을 나타내는 상징적인 행위이다. 단순하면서도 엉뚱하게 생긴 이 동물은 자유롭게 노래를 부르며 춤을 추며 하늘을 날라 다녔다고 한다. 그 모습이 꼭 지금의 나 자신과 닮았다는 생각이 문득 들었다. 나는 그림을 그리거나 형태를 만들 때가 가장 즐겁다. 작업을 하면서 나도 모르게 흥얼거리거나 몸짓을 한다. 그 순간..나는 제강이 되었다.

드로잉 ● 이노무 리에(가칭, 본명은 이노우에 리에)가 갑자기 "영원(forever)하다는 건 뭘까요?"라고 나에게 물었다. 나는 잠시 머뭇거리며.. "지금 이 순간이 영원이 아닌가?"라고 대답했다. 지금 이 순간.. 보고 듣고 말하고 느끼는 이 순간마다 나의 정신은 좋은 쪽으로든 나쁜 쪽으로든 어떻든 변한다. 이 순간을 나는 드로잉으로 남긴다. 동물을 그린다.(동물은 나를 의미한다) "길을 걷다 우연히 어느 미술학원 앞을 지날 때가 있었다. 넓은 유리창 안에는 유치원생이나 초등학생들이 크레파스나 물감으로 그린 예쁜 그림들이 액자에 걸려 있었다. 나는 곰곰이 그 그림을 들여다보았다. 그림들 속에는 형태들이 대부분 단순하고 색깔이 강렬했다. 아이들의 눈에는 구도나 형태의 비례, 색의 대비에는 전혀 관심이 없었다. 그저 상상 속의 이미지를 그대로 표현해 낼 뿐이었다. 하지만 아이들이 무엇을 표현하고 싶었는지 그림들 속에 단순하지만 명확하게 나와 있었다. 나는 지금 그 그림들처럼 '단순하고 따뜻하게 그릴 수 있을까?' 라는 스스로의 물음을 던졌다. 어린아이가 느끼는 시각적인 이미지와 느낌들.. 나 또한 어릴 적 그렸던 그림들처럼 형태들의 단순함 속의 강한 색채의 배열은 내 안에서 표현되는 나 스스로가 아닐까라는 생각이 문득 들었다. 가장 원초적이고 단순하지만 따뜻하고 정이 가는, 나를 표현하는 작업을 하고 싶다."

구멍(움직임) ● 인간의 머리에는 일곱 개의 구멍이 있는데, 그 구멍들은 영혼이 들어왔다 나갔다 하는 통로라고 한다. 눈으로 보고, 귀로 듣고, 입으로 말하고, 코로 숨 쉬는 고요한 순환은 내 영혼이 잘 돌아가고 있다는 걸 보여준다. 형태에 구멍을 파는 것은 영혼의 흔적을 담기 위해서이다. 칠을 할 수도 있겠지만, 구멍을 파면서 생기는 순간의 긴장감이 더 명확하게 이 '순간'을 나타내기 때문이다. 뒤죽박죽인 것처럼 보이지만 무질서 속에 나름의 질서를 가진 움직임을 나타낸다.

색(소리) ● 어두운 밤하늘에 불꽃놀이를 보고 있으면 어린이가 된 듯 마음 속 무언가가 꿈틀거리며 기분을 묘하게 만든다. 아이가 불을 보면 본능적으로 만지고 싶어 하는 것처럼, 색은 무언가 고요한 울림이 있는 것 같다. 오늘은 빨간색이 좋다가도 내일이면 노란색이 좋기도 한 이유는 색을 통해 인간은 본능적으로 감정을 느끼는 것 같다. 나는 그때그때 느끼는 감정을 색으로 표현한다. ● 나의 상상동물들은 내 마음 속 어딘가에 있는 찬란한 순간이다. 그리고 당신의 마음 속 어딘가에 있는 고요한 노래와 춤이다. ■ 강창호

강창호의 개인전 '상상동물'에 부쳐 ● 지금처럼 매체와 그 효과들이, 기발한 아이디어와 정치적인 제스춰가 거의 모든 것을 대신하고 있는 이 복잡한 세상에서 강창호가 몇 년 동안 계속 만들어내고 있는 조각품들은 이른바 좀 나간다 하는 신진 작가들의 작품들과 견주어 그다지 쇼킹하거나 시선을 잡아 끌지도 않아 보이며, 얼핏 보기에 좀 시대착오적 이라는 생각을 들게 할지도 모르겠다. 그 작품들은 기괴한 형상을 하고 있는데 짐승의 모습 같아 보이기도 하고 투박하고 낯선 인상을 준다. 그는 중국의 '제강신화'라는 이야기로부터 영감을 얻어서 그런 상상의 동물들을 만들기 시작했다고 한다. 눈, 코, 입, 귀가 없어서 듣고 보고 말하지는 못했으나 자신만의 음악에 맞춰 언제나 즐겁게 춤을 추며 명랑하고 행복한 삶을 살던 그를 죽음으로 몰고 간 것은 다름 아닌 만물을 듣고 맛보라고 그의 몸에 일곱 개의 구멍을 뚫어준 속세로부터의 호의였다. 제강은 혼돈을 의미한다. 습관적으로 받아들여지는 부정적이고 불완전하다는 선입견을 버린다면 혼돈이라는 개념은 무한한 탄생과 생명을 의미하는 엄청난 에너지라고도 읽을 수 있다. 이는 창세 이전의 형국과도 같으며 모든 것을 품어내는 여유다. 불확실한 오늘날을 사는 청년 조각가의 가슴에 깊이 되새길 만 한 태도다. 내가 아는 강창호가 제강을 닮아있다. 얼마 전 쏘가리를 잡으러 가던 길에 그는 '형님, 저는 즐겁게 작업하면서 행복하게 살고 싶습니다.' 라는 말을 했다. 나는 어릴 적부터 무인도에 표류하게 되는 상상을 자주 하곤 했는데 그때 강창호 같은 사람이 같이 있다면 통나무로 집도 짓고 불도 피우고 먹을 것도 구해서 구조선이 올 때까지 얼마든지 버텨낼 수 있을 거라는 생각이 든다. 세상이 복잡해져 갈수록 제강을 닮은 사람들과 그들이 세상에 던지는 메시지가 점점 더 소중하게 여겨지는 건 왜일까. 자기만의 신화를 매일 일기처럼 써 가며 즐겁게 사는 강창호의 상상 동물들은 말없이 많은 이야기들을 들려주고 있다. ■ 이대일

Dream of Jegang ● I finally got my own room in the attic upstairs when I became a freshman in middle school. (I had to share a room with my younger brother until then.) I was excited to finally have my own private space. I thought long and hard about how I could decorate the small space before building support beams with several sticks of 1m in length and covering them with a light blanket. I created the most ideal space I had intended for the first time. I went under the blanket that hung from the support beams and inside the dark, tranquil space, I felt the primitive instincts deep within my heart. I have great love for primitive things, but that does not mean that I'm a primitive man. After all, I'm enjoying the convenience of my smartphone. It's just that even though people commonly share similar thoughts, I was different from others in that I've always been curious about my existence and the origin of nature, human and all creations. One day, I was able to solve a little bit of the puzzle when I came across the mythical animal called, 'Jegang,' by chance. ● I am working on a project with a theme of 'imaginary animals (pure animals).' Jegang in Oriental myths is referred to as chaos. The appearance of Jegang is quite simple; it is faceless (no eyes, nose, mouth or ears) and has a round body with 4 wings and 6 limbs. My fascination with this animal was triggered upon learning its two hobbies, 'singing' and 'dancing.' Before being simply defined as representations of music and dance, singing and dancing are symbolistic acts that represent 'sound' and 'movement.' It has been said that this animal with a simple yet unique appearance flew across the sky singing and dancing freely. I suddenly realized the exact resemblance I shared with the animal. I am most happy when I'm drawing or creating figures, and I tend to hum and make gestures unconsciously while working on my projects. In these moments, I become Jegang. Drawing ● Inomu Rie asked me, "What does 'forever' mean?" I hesitated for a moment before answering, "Isn't this moment forever? This present moment... whenever I see, hear, speak and feel, my mind is subject to change whether it is positive or negative, and I leave the traces of each moment as drawings. I draw animals (animals, meaning "myself"). "I once passed by an art institute by chance one day. Inside the large glass windows, I could see pretty framed pictures painted with watercolors or drawn with crayons by kindergarten and elementary school students that were hanging on the walls. I looked carefully at the paintings. Most of the shapes and images were simple but had intense colors. It seemed as if the structure, proportion of the shapes and color contrast were not important factors to take under consideration, and they were only interested in outwardly expressing the images embedded in their imagination. However, what they wanted to illustrate was clearly represented in their simple paintings. I asked myself, 'Would I be able to draw a simple and warm image like them?' The visual images seen through the eyes of the children and the emotions they feel... I suddenly realized that the array of intense colors within simplicity of shapes seen in the pictures that I myself have drawn when I was young are representations of myself from deep within. I wish to work on a project that is the most primitive and simple yet warm and approachable – something that will allow me to express myself." Hole (Movement) ● The human head has seven holes, which are referred to as passages through which one's spirit enters and exits. The tranquil cycle of seeing through the eyes, hearing through the ears, speaking through the mouth and breathing through the nose is evidence that one's spirit is sound. A hole is drilled into a figure to capture the traces of a spirit. It may be painted instead, but the moment of tension during the drilling represents this 'moment' more clearly. It may seem disorganized and messy to the eyes, but it actually represents an orderly movement within disorder. Color (Sound) ● Watching fireworks on a dark night sky will spark a strange feeling within us as if we have become children again. As evidenced by children's instinctive desire to reach out their hands and touch fire, colors tend to quietly reverberate. People's preference for color change from time to time, and this can be explained by the fact that there are instinctive human emotions associated with different colors. I express the emotions I feel at a specific moment through the usage of different colors. ● My imaginary animals represent the brilliant moments embedded in my heart, and they are the tranquil songs and dances that can be found in your heart. ■ Kang Chang-ho

Kang Chang-ho's Exhibition, 'Imaginary Animals' ● In the complex world where nearly everything has been replaced with the brilliant ideas and political gestures of the media and their influences, the sculptures created by Kang Chang-ho over a period of several years may be neither shocking nor attention-grabbing compared to the works of other popular, up-and-coming artists. At first glance, his works may even seem inappropriate for this time period. They are in bizarre shapes and forms, which are reminiscent of animals and may even give an impression that they are crude and strange. He explained that he was inspired to create these imaginary animals upon becoming aware of the 'Chinese myth of Jegang.' Although the mythical creature, Jegang, had no eyes, nose, mouth or ears and therefore could see, hear nor speak, it led a cheerful and content life, dancing happily to its own music, until it was driven to its death by the supposed generosity of the world, which made seven holes into its body to enable it to hear and enjoy its surroundings. Jegang represents chaos. After abandoning the stereotype of viewing chaos as something that is incomplete with negative connotations, one will come to realize that chaos can, instead, be regarded as enormous energy that signifies an infinite potential for birth and life. This is similar to the circumstances prior to the creation of the world, where everything was embraced. It is understandable that a young sculptor, living in modern society that is full of uncertainties, has engraved such outlook or attitude in his heart. The Kang Chang-ho I know resembles Jegang. On our way to catch mandarin fish, he told me, "Dae-il, I want to enjoy my work and live in happiness." Ever since I was young, I've often imagined myself being a castaway on a deserted island. If I were with someone like Kang Chang-ho, he would built a house out of logs, make fire and gather food to eat, ensuring our survival before being finally rescued. With complexity escalating in the world, people resembling Jegang and the messages they try to deliver seem increasingly rare and valuable. The imaginary animals of Kang Chang-ho, who lives in happiness while creating his own myth every single day, are here to tell us countless valuable stories, but only if we are willing to listen. ■ Lee Dae-il
