한경우 개인전 『Red Cabinet』 ● 서울대학교 조소과를 졸업하고 Art Institute of Chicago에서 Film, Video & New Media(MFA)를 수학한 한경우는 설치작업과 함께 관람객을 참여자로 펼쳐지는 퍼포먼스를 실시간으로 보여준다. 그의 작품은 얼핏 옵아트(Optical Art)와 같이 사람의 시각에 의존하여 착시현상을 일으키는 작업같이 보여지지만, 이번 전시 'Red Cabinet'은 시각적 트릭 배후에 작가가 추구하는 시각적 진실을 관람객 스스로 자각하도록 하는 CCTV작업 시리즈를 선보인다. ● 미처 정리 되지 않은 방에 들어서는 듯한 느낌을 주는 그의 설치작업은 일상적인 사물들이 질서 없이 늘어져 있는 모습이다. 그리고 방 한 켠에 위치한 영상은 이 풍경과는 사뭇 동떨어진 느낌의 질서정연한 이미지를 보여준다. 그것은 우리가 흔히 알고 있는 몬드리안(Mondriaan)의 추상화, 화면조정시간에 나오는 컬러바(Color Bar), 또한 제스퍼 존스(Jasper Johns)의 성조기(Flag)이다. 한치의 의심 없이 작품 사이를 지나가는 순간 고정된 이미지 사이로 보이는 움직이는 자신의 형체는 평소 알고 있던 이미지로 인식한 화면이 현재 자신이 서있는 곳을 비추는 풍경이라는 것을 알려준다. 단순하고 익숙한 화면은 정지되어 있는 듯 하지만 실은 실시간으로 상영되고 있는 현재진행형의 설치장면인 것이다.

작가에 의해 제시된, 그 사물들을 바라보는 단 하나의 시점은 하나의 명쾌한 이미지를 만들어낸다. 여기서 명쾌하다는 것은 단지 우리가 인식가능 하다는 것 그 이상 그 이하도 아니다. 평소 우리가 '알고 있다'고 말하는 것은 얼마나 오만한 경험에 대한 믿음이며 얕은 지식의 함정인가. 무질서함 속에서 절대적인 한 시점을 만들기 위해 철저히 계산된 배열은 무수한 가능성으로 펼쳐지고 읽혀질 수 있는 현실 속에 오직 하나의 진리를 발견하고자 하는 작가의 근본적인 물음이다. 이 세상에 논쟁의 여지가 없는 명제가 존재하는가 하는 물음에 망설임 없이 그렇다고 대답할 수 있을까 하는 의문을 가져본다. 참, 거짓을 가릴 수 있을 때 우리는 '명제'라 하지만 참과 거짓을 가리는 기준이라는 것을 생각해 보면, 한낱 인간이 만들어낸 분류표일 뿐이다. ● 그 어느 때보다도 윤택한 문명의 혜택을 받고 있다고 자평하는 현 세대는 학습한 대로 인식할 뿐 있는 그대로의 현상을 인지하는 것도 어려운 눈뜬 장님이 되어가는 것은 아닌지 돌아보게 된다. 사람은 아는 대로, 본 대로 지식과 지각을 통해 받아들이지만, 각자의 경험에 따라 하나의 사실은 여러 경로의 해석의 여지를 갖게 된다. 이에 대해 반기를 드는 것이 한경우의 작품이다. 그의 작품은 시각적 유희가 아닌 시각적 진실을 추구한다. 의도된 트릭이지만 우리를 속이는 것은 작가가 아닌 관람객 자신임을 깨닫는다. 한경우의 작품은 보이지 않는 진리에 대한 추상적 믿음이 아닌 선행적 지식과 경험의 그림자에 정작 눈앞에 있어도 인식하지 못하는 본질에 대한 믿음인 것이다. ■ 문정민

Kyung Woo Han SOLO EXHIBITION 『Red Cabinet』 ● HAN Kyung Woo, who graduated from the Department of Sculpture at Seoul National University and earned an MFA in Film, Video and New Media at the Art Institute of Chicago, showcases a series of installations, each of which takes advantage of the audience's instant responses as an on-site performance. At first glance, his work appears to be geared to cause an optical illusion as optical art. This exhibition, entitled Red Cabinet, displays a series of works employing closed-circuit televisions, which lead the spectators to see through the visual tricks and recognize a visible form of truth hidden behind. ● Each installation features a room filled with everyday objects scattered in a disorderly manner. It feels as if stepping into a lived-in room in a messy state. The television set installed in one corner shows an orderly, balanced image far removed from the state of the room: an abstract painting of Piet Mondriaan, color bars used as the television test pattern, or Flag by Jasper Johns. However, the viewers are left with an unexpected surprise as they innocently approach the television sets while looking around, presuming that every screen must be showing a freeze frame. They realize that the screen has been displaying the room in which they are moving around in real time. ● The artist provides a single perspective for each screen, and this works to create a single clear-cut image. The adjective clear-cut here is intended to mean that it is recognizable by the spectators, no more, no less. How arrogant and ignorant are we to believe that we "know" the truth based on overconfidence in experience and shallow knowledge? This is the question thrown by the artist who succeeds to provide a single absolute perspective amid disorderliness through a meticulously calculated arrangement, aiming to uncover one single truth from countless interpretations and assumptions. It gives rise to yet another question: who in this world can say yes without hesitation when asked if there exists a non-controversial thesis? What is called a thesis is something that can be proven either true or false. However, different sets of criteria used to gauge truth are also just manmade. ● His works offer the chance to contemplate whether present generations, who claim to be the ones bestowed with the benefits of today's advanced civilization, are becoming blindfolded and increasingly biased by acquired knowledge, lacking the ability to recognize what is around them as is. People recognize objects through knowledge and a visual perception – based upon what they have learned and seen, and what used to be a single truth transforms into various interpretations in accordance with individual experience. HAN's work conveys strong opposition to this. The artist aims to deliver a visual form of truth, rather than simply entertaining the audience visually. Tricks are designed and planted in the pieces by the artist, but the viewers soon realize they are tricked by themselves, not the artist. HAN's work portrays his belief in highlighting the visible (tangible) nature of what is around us, which we often fail to recognize no matter how obvious due to the interference of acquired knowledge and experience. ■ MOON Jung-Min
