국제기구 한-아세안센터에서는 한국과 아세안 회원국의 만 30세 이하 청년작가를 대상으로 2011년 한-아세안 멀티미디어 공모전을 개최합니다. 올해로 3회를 맞는 본 공모전은 사진∙영상 등 멀티미디어를 통하여 한국과 아세안 청년들 간 상호이해를 넓히고 뉴미디어를 매개로 실력을 겨루는 역동적인 교류확대를 위해 기획되었습니다. 공모전 주제인 'FUTURE IMAGE'는 과거와 현재가 아닌 현재와 미래의 아세안 지역의 새로운 이미지를 정립하고 글로컬 시대의 새로운 예술, 문화 정체성을 제시하고자 하는 의미를 가지고 있습니다. 21세기 디지털 시대의 주변이 아닌 또 다른 중심으로 아세안 예술의 이미지를 추구함으로서 이번 공모전은 과거의 아세안 국가들이 가지고 있던 정형화된 이미지를 넘어선 아시아 젊은 크리에이터 간의 교류의 장이 될 것입니다.

1980년대 이후, 확산되어온 글로벌리즘은 결국 서구 중심주의에서 벗어나지 못했으며, 다양한 문화와 사상을 포섭하지 못한 채 불균형한 양상으로 흘러갔습니다. 이에 대한 대안으로 등장한 것이 '글로컬리즘'으로 21세기 주요 화두로 떠오른 글로컬리즘은 '다양성'을 인정하면서 균형 있는 '세계화'를 지향하는, '지역'과 '세계'가 융합되는 현실적인 방안을 모색하는 것이었습니다. 하지만 경제적인 면이 부각되는 현 시점에서 '한국', '중국', '일본'을 중심으로 한 일련의 구조가 다시금 형성되었으며, 이는 또 다른 '불균형'을 만들어냈습니다.

이번 행사는 한국, 중국, 일본, 인도의 예술교류에서 벗어나 새롭게 부상하고 있는 아세안 10개국의 시각예술 기획자와 작가가 참여하는 미디어아트 공모전 'Future Image'로 진행될 예정입니다. 이 전시는 21세기 디지털 시대에서 주변이 아닌 또 다른 중심이 되는 아세안 예술의 이미지를 추구함으로써 과거 아세안 국가들이 지니고 있던 정형화된 이미지를 넘어서는 양 지역 크리에이터 간의 교류의 장이 될 것입니다. 그 동안 아세안 미술은 지역적 ∙ 민족적 특성과 과거지향적인 이미지에 방점을 찍는 '오리엔탈리즘'이라는 도구로 분석되어온 경향이 있습니다. 하지만 이번 전시에서는 이를 극복하고, 현대미술 안에서 자리매김하고 있는 미래지향적인 이미지들을 제시하고자 하며 이는 동시대 아세안 미술의 진면목을 조명하는 계기로 작용할 것입니다. ■ 김지혜

ASEAN-KOREA CENTRE launches the 2011 ASEAN-Korea Multimedia Competition for young artist including university/graduate students of ASEAN and Korea. The Competition is organized to provide a channel of exchanges and to enhance mutual understanding between the young generation of ASEAN and Korea through new media. The theme, FUTURE IMAGE illustrates ASEAN's today and tomorrow's contemporary image and suggests a new conformity of its art and culture in this glocal society. It aims to be a cultural platform for the young communities of ASEAN and Korea to overcome the standardized image of ASEAN and to pursue a new and contemporary language of the art in ASEAN as the nexus of today's digital community. ● Globalism, which continued to spread across the world from the 1980s onwards, is often criticized for imbalances that spring from the failure to break free from Western-oriented perspectives and to encompass different cultures and ideas. This gave rise to an alternative called glocalism. Glocalism, the new buzz word of the 21st century, seeks to achieve balanced globalization that embraces diversity and to find effective ways to promote the prosperity of local communities. what we have to keep in mind is that inequality and imbalance are found not only in relationships between the West and the East; another dimension of imbalance was created from a system that centers on the three countries of Korea, China and Japan due to the heavy focus on economic growth. In short, we are going down the wrong path of reproducing the adverse effects of Western-led globalization since the emergence of neo-liberalism. It is time we set this on the right track. This event is an important step to bring stimulating changes to Asia's art scene overwhelmingly inclined toward Korea, China, Japan and India. The centerpiece of the event will be bringing together and artists from ten newly emerging ASEAN countries. It is designed to spotlight ASEAN art continuing to rise as another central pillar of the art world in today's digital era and to serve as a new forum for Korean artists to expand cultural exchanges with ASEAN artists striving to push the boundaries of ASEAN art. ASEAN art has long been considered to overtly promote Orientalism that emphasizes the regional and ethnic attributes and backward-looking images. This event aims to shed light upon the less known aspects of ASEAN art as a forward-looking contributor to the contemporary art world to counter fixed images of the past.
