음양;상징,장식,부적(陰陽;象徵,裝飾,符籍) ● 전통문양은 민족의식의 반영이며 민족적인 가치를 상징화 하는 창조활동의 결과물이다. 문양은 상징성을 가진 공통된 가치의 형상화로서 문양이 묘사하고 있는 사물이 실제로 존재하지 않는 경우에도 문화라는 이름의 실체 속에서 그 숨은 상징성을 나타낸다. 문화란 삶의 가치와 의미를 만들어주는 소중한 의식 활동의 결과이다. 인간이 다른 생명체와 구분되는 것은 전통문화를 전승하면서 새로운 문화를 창조할 수 있다는 것이다. ● 또한 전통문양은 이상적인 삶에 대한 현실적 기원을 일종의 주술적 대상으로 표현하는 방법이며, 민족의 집단적인 가치를 통념에 의해 고정되고 표상된 상징적 기호로 표현된 미술이라 할 수 있다. ● 작가에게 문양은 생활 속에 존재하는 단순한 장식미술만이 아니라 인간의 욕망과 기원을 담은 주술적 대상으로 민족 정서를 표현하고 전달하는 매개체 구실을 하고 있는 상징적 조형물이다. ● 작가는 이러한 단청이나 문양 속에 갇혀있는 오방색 등의 다채로운 색들을 음양오행의 전통적인 형식으로부터 해방시켜서 자유로운 색채 공간을 만들고, 동시에 캔버스와 액자라는 제한된 형식에 가둠으로써 새로운 창조적인 기법을 이루고자 노력하였다. 그리고 전통문양을 프랙탈(fractal)적인 배치를 통해서 무질서 속의 질서(chaos)를 표현함으로써 인간의 끊임없는 바램을 이끌어 내고자 한다. ■ E.J. Yin-Yang;Symbol,Decoration,Talisman The Korean traditional pattern is not only a reflect of national consciousness but also a result of creative inspiration in symbolizing the national value. The patterns are symbolic visualization of the common value. Although it is an illusion, through the object, the symbolic patterns express a culture that exists. Culture is a result of a conscious activity to make our life valuable and meaningful. What makes man different from other creatures is that man only can hand down the tradition and create new culture. Moreover, the Korean traditional pattern is a way of expressing the realistic desire of the ideal life through an object of enchantment and also an art which expresses the national value as a symbol. The artist considers the Korean traditional pattern as a symbolic artwork which plays a role of a medium, expressing the national emotion as well as a simple decoration art. The artist tries to make a new creative method of liberating the colors that are restricted from 'Danchung'- a pattern of many colors-, Korean traditional pattern and other traditional forms like Yin-Yang, while restricting the colors to the space of a canvas or a frame. He also tries to derive the human desire by expressing the chaos through the fractal arrangement of the traditional patterns. ■ E.J. Kwon
