한 획 (一劃) ● 태곳적엔 법이 없었다. / 순박이 깨지지 않았다. / 순박이 깨지자 법이 생겼다. // 법은 어디에서 나왔는가? / 한 획에서 나왔다. / 한 획이란 존재의 샘이요, 모습의 뿌리다. / 그것은 신에게는 드러내지만, 사람에게는 감춘다. / 세상 사람은 알기 어렵다. / 그러므로 한 획의 법은 스스로 세워야 한다. // 무릇, 한 획의 법을 세운 사람은 / 무법(無法)으로써 유법(有法)을 만들고, / 그 법으로써 모든 법을 꿰뚫을 것이다. ■ 석도(石濤, 청, 1641~1720), (일획론(一劃論), 「일화론(一畵論)」, 『고과화상화어록(苦瓜和尙畵語錄)』)

오랜 옛날부터 지금에 이르기까지 예술가들은 끊임없이 자문하고 실험한다. 이전보다 새롭고 신선하며, 이 시대에 필요한, 시대와 교감하는 정신을 담아내고자 노력한다. 또한 어떤 방향에서든 보다 진일보하고자 하는 인간의 욕망을 충족시키고자 한다. 드로잉은 그 자체로 완성된 것도 있지만 작품을 구상하고 연습하며, 작업을 위한 작가의 생각을 정리하는 수단이다. 삶에 대한 통찰과 올바른 것, 알맞은 것, 목표에 대한 탐구로 이루어진 획 하나하나에는 작가의 예술세계, 작품에 대한 마음가짐과 노력 등이 날것 그대로 생생하게 드러난다. 한 획의 무게감을 아는 작가의 획 하나하나에는 무수한 연습으로 삶의 자취를 담아낸 작가의 신념과 시류에 흔들리지 않는 굳건한 정신이 담겨있다. 한 획 안에 자신의 모든 것을 담아 가장 완전한 모습으로 화면 안에 되살리려는 결과이다. 석도가 말하는 스스로 세운 법, 부단한 노력으로 깨달은 한 획에는 변하지 않는 가치, 회화의 정신이 담겨있다. 한 시대의 미술가로 흔들리지 않고 바로 서고자 하는 국내외 작가 중에서 15인의 작품 38점을 모아 '한 획(一劃, A Brushstroke)'이라는 이름의 전시를 마련했다. 항상 새롭게 변화하고 반응하는, 이 시대를 살아가는 예술가로서의 고민과 마음가짐을 그들의 한 획을 통해 들여다보고자 한다. ■ 학고재

Since the past to present, artists have been infinitely question themselves and experiment accordingly. Artists work to share the mutual response with their generation and focus to create the new and different. Also human being's essential desire to move forward from any direction has to be satisfied. Drawing is complete in itself but also could be understood as a way to brainstorm and organize the artist's inner thoughts. Showing the artist's world; every brushstroke contains artist's insight about life and the exploration on the subject interested. Every brushstroke of the artist, who understands the importance and the value of 'a brushstroke', holds the dignity of the infinite practice and the bold spirit of the artist which is not influenced by the trend of the day. Such artist, completes 'a brushstroke' with everything he has to offer and gives a life to the artwork. 38 artworks of the fifteen renown Korean and international atists' works are gathered to complete the exhibition: 'A Brushstroke (一劃, A Brushstroke)'. Through 'A Brushstroke', constantly changing artists of this generation and their mindset can be witnessed. ■ Hakgojae
