대부분의 사람들은 어린 시절 빨리 어른이 되고 싶어 기도를 한 적이 있을 것이다. 멋진 어른이 되어 엄마, 아빠처럼 나에게 모든 것을 결정해주고 싶은 것이 그 시절 어른이 되고 싶은 이유였다. 그러나 어른이 되어서 정작 이처럼 사는 이가 몇이나 있을까? 그 때의 나의 부모님이 내가 생각했던 그런 슈퍼맨이었을까? 많은 사람들이 그들이 생각했던 것과 달리 여러 이해관계 속에서 항상 주변을 의식하는 삶을 사는 것이 현실이다. 이때의 어릴 적 꿈은 그저 허상처럼 느껴지고 만다. 학교를 졸업한 20대 중반부터 사회생활이 조금 익숙해져 꾀를 부리게 되는 30대 초반까지 사람들은 아마도 그들이 생각했던 이상화된 삶과 현실의 삶에서 느껴지는 괴리로 인해 가장 고군분투하는 시간을 보내게 될 것이다. 현대사회가 그들에게 제시하는 모범적인 구성원으로서 갖추어야 할 조건들은 그들이 생각하는 것처럼 쉽게 얻어지지도 않고, 얻었다 하더라도 그 만족은 쉽사리 사라지기 일쑤이다.

김혜원의 작업은 그가 살고 있는 이 같은 현실에서 출발한다. 창작의 동기를 현실에서 얻기는 했지만, 그가 그리고자 하는 것은 현실이 아니다. 그는 작품을 통해 쉽게 지쳐버릴 것만 같은 현실에서 위로와 치유를 받고자 한다. 위로의 공간은 어릴 시절의 따스한 감성을 자극하며 이상적인 이미지로 채워진다. 작가는 이러한 공간은 'wonder land'라 칭했는데, 이는 편안함을 주는 그 주변의 익숙한 모티프들과 동경의 대상으로 가득 채워진 세계를 말한다. 작품에 등장하는 귀여운 캐릭터는 작가의 대리자로 wonder land의 주인공이다. 동화 속 주인공과 같은 모습은 작가가 바라는 이상화된 인물로 그에게 가장 편안함을 주는 언어로 사용되곤 한다.

2008년부터 꾸준히 작업을 진행해 온 작가는 2010년을 기준으로 변화를 시도했다. 이전 작품이 주인공을 통해 자신의 감정을 그대로 표출하기 위한 것이었다면 김혜원은 이제 현실과 상상의 세계 사이에서 한층 더 발전된 유희를 보여준다. 이는 전통적인 모티브의 도입으로 나타나며, 실제로 「stage moon」에서 볼 수 있다. 달나라의 토끼가 계수나무 밑에서 절구질을 하는 모티프는 설명할 필요가 없는 대중적인 민담의 소재이다. 작가는 작품에 등장하는 토끼를 하이브리드(hybrid)적인 의미를 지닌 대상으로, 전통과 현대성을 동시에 보여주는 모티프라 하였다. 계수나무 아래 떡방아를 찧는 토끼는 민담 속 그것의 전통적인 역할과 함께 작가가 어릴 적 좋아했던 『이상한 나라의 앨리스』의 토끼와 결합되어 있다. 한편 작품에 등장하는 토끼는 기존의 그것들과 달리 작가에게 의해 새롭게 창조된 존재로도 볼 수 있다. 결국, 작품에서 토끼는 현실의 우리와 다르다. 그것은 전통적인 역할을 하면서도 이에 머무르지 않고 새로운 의미를 가지는 존재로 재탄생하였다. 그의 작업은 이제 막 화단에 발을 내디딘 김혜원의 현실과 이에 대처하는 자세를 보여준다는 점에서 주목할 만하다. 현실과 이상세계 사이에서 열심히 고민하는 작가는 작품을 통해 자신을 위로하고 더 나아가 유희의 단계로 그것을 이끄는데, 이러한 모습은 작가 김혜원이 보여줄 앞으로의 행보를 더욱 기대하게 만든다. ■ 김윤애

As a child, many would have looked forward to becoming an adult and yearned for the day one would start making its own decision, structuring its own life. Yet how many of us areliving such self-reliant lives we had dreamt of? Were our role model adults the supermen we had imagined that time? The reality is a little different from what we had thought; our lives are much dependent on the complex relationships with the people around us and the circumstances we are faced with. Especially throughout their 20s and 30s, many have a hard time accepting and fighting against the gap between reality and the ideal lives they had dreamt of as children. The ideal terms and conditions for being an ideal grown up suggested by the contemporary society are not as easy to attain as many would have thought and even if gained, the satisfaction never lasts long. ● Hei ONE Kim's works take their motif from such reality yet the idea she is trying to convey is something different. Through her works, Kim tries to console and heal the exhausted souls of reality. Her healing space is made up ofideal images that stimulate our childhood sentiments. This space titled 「Wonder Land」is a world filled with familiar motives and images that calms our spirits. The character appearing in Kim's work is the hero of wonder land. Through the idealized character depicted as a fairy tale hero, the artist speaks in the most comfortable, peaceful language. ● Since 2008,the artist has been exploring different themes and in 2010 attempted for a big change. Whereas Kim's early works tended to focus on expressing individual emotions, her recent works show a more developed exploitation of the gap between reality and the imaginary world. This is accomplished by the application of traditional motives; 「Stage Moon」 is an example. The image of a rabbit pounding grain in a mortar under the great laurel tree in the moon is a popular Korean traditional motif. The artist explains that the rabbit appearing in her works is a subject of hybrid significance, a motif showing both tradition and the modern world. The image of the rabbit in the moon is combined with that of the rabbit of 『Alice in Wonderland』, the artist's beloved Western fiction of her childhood. The rabbit in Hei ONE Won Kim's work is a new kind of creature much different from a rabbit in reality. It is a new being with a new significance yet maintaining the traditional quality. ● Hei ONE Kim's works reveal her attitudes of confronting the reality as a young emerging artist. By exploring the gap between reality and the ideal world, Kim consoles herself and moreover brings it up into the level of play. We as audience look forward to seeing her next steps in her artistic career. ■ Youn Ae Kim
