THE ISLAND

외로움을 간직한 사유(思惟)의 섬 ● 사람들 사이에 섬이 있다. 그 섬에 가고 싶다. - 정현종 시인의 「섬」 ● 나에게'섬'이란 고립, 단절, 그리고 외로움의 이미지를 떠올리게 한다. 사람들에게 '섬'이란, 과연 어떤 존재로 인식되고 있는가? 더욱이 자욱한 안개에 가려 보일 듯 말 듯 흐릿하게 보이는 섬이라면? 시인이 표현한 것처럼 사람들은 각자의 섬을 가지고 내면의 외로움과 고독을 느끼며 살아간다. 하지만, 아이러니하게도 그토록 섬에 가고 싶어 한다. 이것은 바로 '섬'이라는 존재가 인간의 근원적인 외로움에 대한 마지막 희망이라는 것을 말하고 있는 것이다. 이처럼 '섬'이라는 짧은 단어는 우리에게 그만큼 깊은 울림과 넓은 파동을 주는 존재다.

작가는 신체의 눈이라는 부분을 통해 형상을 인식하고 정신적 영역으로 잠입하는 순간에 이입되어 일상 속에서 무심코 스쳐 지나가는 평범한 풍경의 어떤 근원을 포착, 극대화하여 표현하고 있다. 바로 이미지가 가지는 내재적인 상징성 그리고 추상적인 의미가 작품의 중심인 것이다.

강민영의 전작인 「창」 시리즈들은 작가의 심리 상태와 마음을 그대로 반영한다. 깨진 유리 조각에 비춰진 모습이나 반사경, 창문과 같이 간접적인 시각을 통해 비춰진 모습들은 그녀 자신이 느끼는, 즉 세상에 첫발을 내딛을 때의 낯설음 혹은 두려움의 표현이라 해도 좋겠다. 한편, 근작인 'Island'는 사뭇 다른 느낌을 표현하고 있다. 어떤 표현 기교나 누군가의 시선을 끌기 위한 그림이라기보다는 있는 그대로의 모습을 여과 없이 그대로 보여준다. 고요하고 잔잔함 잔상을 주는 풍경의 「The Island」 시리즈를 계속 보고 있노라면 무언가 말할 수 없는 쓸쓸함과 고독이 밀려온다. 그녀는 특별한 표현 기교보다는 아무렇게나 헝클어진 잡초들로 그 본연의 모습을 표현했고, 한 가운데에는 쓸쓸하게 우뚝 솟은 앙상한 나뭇가지를 배치함으로써'인생이 항상 양지는 아니다'라며 자신만의 섬을 표현하고 있다. 이는 보는 이로 하여금 다소 어둡지만 작가 특유의 아름다운 표현법으로 탄생된'섬'에 자연스럽게 공감할 수 있도록 하고 있다. 전작에서 나타나는 세상에 대한 낯설음을 넘어'섬'이라는 외로운 공간을 자연스럽게 그리고 무척이나 아름답게 표현하여 타인과의 소통이라는 희망의 메시지를 주고자 하는 것이다.

그녀는"예술가란, 혼자 고립되는 것을 두려워하지 말 것이며, 기교를 신뢰하지 않고, 표현함에 있어 대중을 의식하지 아니하고, 자신만의 눈으로 모든 것에 진실됨을 담아 진정한 아름다움을 찾아내야 한다."라고 말한 로댕의 예술철학을 작업 정신의 기반으로 생각하고 있다. 이는 그녀가 작업에 있어 진실함을 얼마나 중요하게 생각하고 있는지를 알 수 있게 해준다.

우리는 태어나서 죽을 때까지'선택'을 하면서 살아간다. 그 과정에서 도움을 받을 수 있지만, 결국 답은 우리의 눈동자 속이 아니면 어디에도 없다. 그만큼 인간은 외롭고 고독한 존재이다. 이제 그 외로운 현실과 힘들게 다투면서 배척하지 말자. 받아들이자. 그런 의미에서, 그녀의'섬'은 대중성만을 좇는 예술가의'섬'이 아니라 진정한 고독과 외로움을 알고 이를 채워줄 희망과 여운의 메시지를 전달할 예술가의'섬'이다. ● 사람들 사이에 섬이 있다. 나도 그 아름다운 섬에 진정으로 가고 싶다. ■ 김경민

The Island of thoughts, which keeps loneliness ● There is an island between people. I want to go to the island. - Jeong, Hyeon Jong, 「The Island」● An 'Island' reminds me of the images of isolation, severance and loneliness. What kind of existence is an 'island' to other people? What if it is an island which is viewed dimly in thick fog? As it is expressed by the poet, people feel internal loneliness and solitude with their own islands. However, ironically, they are eager to go to the island, It means that the existence of the 'island' is the last hope for human's original loneliness. The short word of 'island' gives us such deep vibration and wide waves. ● Through the physical parts of eyes, the author expresses a certain root of usual landscape which could be passed without notice in daily life by catching and maximizing it through being empathized in the moment when entering the psychological area after recognizing the shape. The immanent symbolism and the abstract means of the images are the center of the work. The previous series of 'window' by Kang, Min Young reflect the author's psychological condition and mind. The figures reflected through the indirect views like broken glass pieces or a reflecting mirror, window could be an expression of strangeness or fear when putting out her first foot into the world. Meanwhile, the recent work, 'Island' expresses very different feelings. It shows the original shape without any filtering rather than a painting to attract someone's attention with certain expression techniques. When looking at the series of 「The Island」 with the landscape that gives quiet and calm afterimages, you can feel some kind of loneliness and solitude which can not be expressed in words. As expressing its original shape with entangled weeds rather than using special expression techniques, she expresses her own island while saying that 'Life is not always in the sun' by arranging thin branches solely risen in the center. Even though it is a little dark, it makes people sympathize with the 'island' created by the author's unique and beautiful expression ways. Exceeding the strangeness towards the world, showed from the previous work, she aims to give a message of hope including communication with others by expressing lonely space of 'the island' naturally and beautifully. ● She has Rodin's artistic philosophy as the basis of her work spirit, which is that "an artist should find a real beauty by containing the sincerity of everything in her eyes without feeling scared of being isolated and believing in techniques and recognizing the public when expressing". This shows that how importantly she thinks of sincerity in her works. ● From the cradle to the grave, our life is filled with 'selections'. Even though we can get some help in the process, eventually the answer can not be found anywhere, but in our eyes. Human beings are such lonely and solitary existence. Now, let's not exclude the lonely reality while having a tough fight with it. Let's accept it. In this meaning, her 'island' is not an artist's 'island' which pursues only the popularity, but an artist's 'island' which delivers the message of hope and lingering images filling the solitude and loneliness.
