2011년 경기창작센터 입주작가로 선정된 김웅현 작가의 개인전을 오는 6월 30일부터 경기창작센터 상설전시관에서 개최합니다. 이번 전시에는 '현실이 온라인 게임과 같다면' 이라는 엉뚱한 생각을 재치 있게 풀어낸 연작 시리즈 3작품이 함께 전시될 예정입니다.

온라인 게임은 가상현실을 거의 완벽하게 구현하고 있는 인터페이스로써 다중적 자아의 활동을 선명하게 경험 할 수 있게 한다. 특히 온라인 게임 안에서의 경제 활동은 단지 이미지로써의 화폐가 아닌 현실의 재화를 창출해 냄으로써 자아는 시작과 끝이 없는 모호한 상태에 놓이게 된다.게임은 이내 끝나기 마련이고 끝판을 깨고 엔딩을 감상하고 난 뒤의 적막과 얼얼함이 생경하게 느껴질 때, 가상공간의 파편화된 사건들의 일부인 인간 대 눈이 빠질 듯 아프고 허리는 끊어질 듯 지끈지끈한 인간의 대결이 시작된다.

'아프리카'(afreeca)는 수많은 매체와 이미지들이 오고 가는 초원이다. 황금같이 반짝이는 수많은 별들 아래서 하루에도 수백 개의 텐트가 지어졌다가 사라지기를 반복한다. '아프리카'(afreeca)에서 살아가는 것은 매우 힘들다. 삶은 언제나 불안정하며, 주체는 하염없이 지지직-거린다. 그것은 큰 혼란과 두려움을 야기하는 것이어서 샤먼은 그들을 위한 의식을 멈출 수 없다. 세간에 주목이 되었던 사건들은자주 기념비적인 층위의 흔적을 남기는데, 답십리 209번지의 땅이 바로 그러하다. 한때 역사의 한 켠 에서 어떤 이의 추억을 간직하고 사라졌을 땅이, 인터넷 지도에 한강물에서 불쑥 솟아올라 거의 1년 가까이 많은 이들이 왕래 했다.

디스커버리 채널에 매주 생존하는 생존전문가 '베어그릴스' 는 절대 죽지 않는다. 수렵과 채집만으로 극한의 자연에서 살아남는 법을 보여주고 위험천만한 장면도 많지만 MMORPG의 캐릭터(로 보이는 베어그릴스)는 죽어도 15초 후에 다시 살아날 것이다. 비현실의 한계와 현실의 한계가 교차되었고, 그 사이를 걷고 있는 MAN은 TV수신 불량 화소처럼 지글지글 댈 수 밖에 없다. 융합현실은 여전히 불확실함을 그 특징으로 하고 있고, 새로운 모멘텀은 진행형이기 때문이다. ■ 김웅현

Especially, economic activities in online games create real goods instead of currency as mere image; the self is suspended in a vague state where there is neither beginning nor end. The game is soon over, and when one feels the strange silence and numbness of having seen the game through its end – that's when the battle of man begins, a battle between one who is part of the fragmented events of the virtual reality, and the other whose eyes water and back aches. ● "Afreeca" is a prairie where countless media and images intersect. Hundreds of tents are erected and then torn down every day, under the endless parade of starts twinkling like the sheen of gold. Living in "Afreeca" is no easy deed. Life is always unstable, and the subject buzzes on, endlessly. It is a situation that generates serious confusion and fear; the shaman cannot stop performing rituals for them. Events worthy of the world's attention often leave behind monumental vestiges of layers. The ground of lot 209 in Dapshipri would qualify as one such. A site that would have disappeared into a corner of history, harboring the memories of some forgotten subject, now juts out of the Han River on the online map, granting passage to many over a period of a year. ● "Bear Grills"(?), a survival expert who literally survives weekly shows on the Discovery Channel, never dies. He shows how to survive in extreme situations in the wild, simply by hunting and collecting. There are perilous moments, but this MMORPG character (meaning, Bear Grills) will be revived even if he dies, within 15 seconds from his death. The limits of irreality and reality intersect. And the MAN who walks on the borders buzzes like the fragmented pixels of a malfunctioning TV screen. The fused reality can still be characterized by uncertainty, and new momentums are still in present progressive. ■ Woong-hyun Kim
