지금 이 순간 ● 작가로서의 나는 현대문화에 있어 나의 역할은 무엇인지 질문해본다. 내가 무엇을 해야 하는가? 나는 무엇을 기여해야 하며 그리고 어떤 방법으로 나의 예술적 창의성에 연관되어야 하는가? 한 개인으로서, 또한 한 작가로서 나의 가장 주된 관심사는 인간이다. 나는 사람들의 삶을 형성하는 이야기들과 사건(일)들이 나의 상상과 지적 관심에 가장 영감을 주는 것들임을 깨닫기 시작했다. 예술은 원시 인류언어로 쓰여졌으며 문화적 괴리를 끊임없이 가로지르는 언어이다.

인류의 모든 역사를 인정하는 함으로써 현대인으로서의 나의 시각을 형성하는 데 도움이 되었다. 작가로서의 나의 역할은 어떤 순간에서의 인간의 활동을 포착하고 가장 본질적 가치의 인간성들을 상세하게 드러내는 것이다. 나의 이러한 예술작업은 우리 삶의 이야기들의 증거인 동시에 우리 과거의 깊이를 보여 준다. 비록 사적이긴 하지만, 이 이야기들은 나에 관한 것이 아니라 우리의 공통된 모습을 반영하는 공유된 경험이다. 인간은 모두 순수하게 연결되어 있다. 우리 개개인은 모두 독특한 동시에 서로 많이 다르지 않다.우리의 불완전성은 종종 우리가 원시 인류 생명체로 분류된다는 사실을 드러내는 것으로 볼 수 있을 것이다. 우리는 가장 매력적이고 다소 비극적인, 로맨틱한 인생을 살며 이와 관련된 해설적인 예술형태를 만들어낸다.

시간은 현재 이 순간을 지나가는 인생의 흐름을 통해 나타난다. 즉각성은 나의 창작 과정에 중요한 역할을 한다. 우리는 현재를 살면서 계속해서 예기치 못한 순간을 맞는다. 이러한 환경에서 예술형태를 창조하는 것은 도전적인 일이다. 내가 종종 영감을 받는 상황에 본능적으로 반응하는 것은 예술작품이 어떻게 완성되는가에 있어서 중요한 결정적 역할을 한다.

인간의 몸은 나의 예술에 있어서 가장 주된 매체이다. 우리의 몸, 손 그리고 눈은 우리를 위해 일하고 그렇게 함으로서 상징적으로 나의 작업의 형태를 만드는 데 도움을 준다. 이 작업의 언어로서 가장 잘 맞는 것은 회화적 표현과 원형 안의 조각이다. 나의 공간 작업들과 조형적 형태들은 문맥과 심상에 의해 보여지며 이는 인간 존재의 증거를 나타내는 증거이기도 하다. 색상, 패턴, 움직임, 윤곽, 무게 및 형태 등의 물리적이고 상징적 가치는 내 작품의 구성 안에서 그들 자신을 명백하게 보여주고 있다. 나의 손은 매체를 형태화하는 데 중요한 역할을 하고 더 나아가 인간의 유대를 위한 역할 또한 포함한다. 그리고 이를 통해 나의 예술은 실현된다.

예술은 내 개인적 삶에서 매우 중요한 역할을 한다. 예술 없이는 나는 내가 갈망하는, 그리고 되고 싶어하는 내 자신이 될 수 없다. 다행히도 나는 인생을 반영하고 해석하고 대답할 수 있는 길을 가지고 있다. 작가로서 나는 내가 어떻게 주제를 선택하고 어떤 방법으로 형태를 구상하는지 정하는 데 심사숙고 해야 한다. 비록 쉽지 않은 일이라 할지라도 나는 내가 할 수 있는 최대한의 단순화를 시도한다. ● 바로 지금 이 순간 그렇게 되어야 한다. ■ 레오나드 어소

Time Being ● As an artist I question what my role in contemporary culture. What is it that I must do? What should I contribute and in which way do I engage my artistic creativity? Human beings are what interest me most, both as a person and as an artist. I have come to realize that the stories and events that are shaping peoples lives are the things that most inspire my imagination and intellectual interests. Art serves as a primal human language, a language that seamlessly transverses cultural divide. ● Acknowledging the full history of human existence has helped to shape my vision as a contemporary person. My role as an artist is to capture human activity as it takes place in the moment, intimately revealing humanities most intrinsic qualities. This artwork of mine should bare witness to the stories of our lives and at the same time reflect the depth of our past. Though personal, these stories are not about me, they are shared experiences that reflect our collective self's. Human beings are all innocently linked; we are singularly unique though not so different from each other. What may be viewed as our imperfections often reveal the truths that distinguish us as primal human creatures. We carry on a most fascinating, somewhat tragic, romantic life's and thus baring the fruit for relevant interpretive art forms. Time being reflects this present moment through which life's current now flows. Immediacy plays an important role in my creative process. . We live in the present and continually face the unexpected time and time again. Creating a relevant art form in this environment is a challenging task. I often respond instinctually to an inspirational situation were in wisdom plays an important decisive role in how the art works become resolved. ● The human body serves as a primary vehicle for my art. Our bodies, hands and eyes serve us and in doing so symbolically help to shape my art forms. The language that best suits this art is pictorial and sculpted in the round. My spatial works of art and sculptural forms are enlightened by contextual and human imagery, which help to reveal the evidence of human existence. The physical and symbolic properties of color, pattern, movement, contour, weight and form manifest themselves in my art compositions. My hands play a vital role in shaping medium so to further embrace the role of human engagement and in this way my art is materialized. ● Art plays a very important role in my personal life, without art I could not be the person that I aspire to be. I am fortunate to have a way to reflect, interpret, and respond to life. As an artist I need to be thoughtful in how I select subject matter and in which way I choose to render art forms. I attempt to simplify things as best I can though this is hardly an easy task. ● For the time being this is how it should be. ■ Leonard Urso
